I've been taking classes at Body Cycle Studio and noticed the room in the front was being renovated. So when an article came out on Be Well Philly Blog that a yoga/barre studio was going in I was intrigued. Than I saw a deal for a $5 class, check out my tip, so I decided to try it on its opening night. The staff was super friendly and they had my waiver form all filled out for me all I had to do was sign. I took a yoga class it was on the third floor. There a cubbies up there but since you have to take your shoes off before going up I just used the ones on the second floor. The room had a great vibe to it, loved the hardwood floors and the decor. If you don't like the heat get a spot closer to the window. The class was packed so the instructed just talk us threw not sure if that's her normal style or if there was more room she would of part takes in poses. I'd come back. read more

Come for the barre and yoga classes, stay for the after class mints. In all seriousness, this is one of my favorite spots in Center City. The staff is incredibly friendly and all make an effort to learn everyone's names. The classes are great and updated constantly to stay fresh. I love the variety of barre and yoga classes; they complement each other well. They sell super cute apparel (love Beyond Yoga) and often have sales and promotions. The studio also hosts some outdoor classes on the weekends during the summer months and occasionally hosts pop-up classes with wine and/or ice cream! read more

I really like Focus Barre! I have only done barre classes here (no yoga). The barre classes are on carpet, which isn't really my preference, but I don't mind it. You definitely need grippy socks or else you will slip all around. The studio feels very clean and is well-maintained. I have taken Meghan and Alex's classes and I love them both. They are challenging, but they always help and fix your form if you need. Special shout out to Alex who is just an A++++ barre instructor!! The (small) negatives are no locker room or showers, and a more limited schedule than I have seen at other studios. I think they expand their schedule in the fall though, so I am looking forward to seeing if there are more morning options. Their prices are fair, and classes are available on ClassPass for a reasonable amount of credits. I will keep coming back here for a good burn! read more

Great class with Jill, although the class was a bit crowded since the yoga class joined our barre class at the last minute (seems the yoga instructor didn't make it in due to the weather). Jill's class was a good compliment to my regular barre classes at Physique 57 and the Pure Empower barre classes at Pure Barre. The studio is up one flight of stairs. Small lockers with key locks are available for computer bags and handbags. I'll definitely return to Focus Barre on future trips to Philadelphia. read more

Man, am I sore. I can also guarantee that it's not coming from a culmination of my recent workouts. The soreness is definitely coming from my barre class today! I've tried barre before at another studio back when I lived in Minneapolis. I liked that place because it was mainly a pilates studio that incorporated barre and I left feeling like I got an amazing core workout. I left Focus barre today feeling like I had not only gotten a great core workout, but also a total body workout! I think my favorite thing about barre classes in general is the stretching immediately after fatiguing a muscle group. I left today feeling the burn, but not all cramped up because the stretching was a priority. As my first visit, I showed up a little early to the studio. I was greeted by a polite receptionist who showed me the studio and pointed out all the pertinent spots, studio, restrooms, cubbies. Located on the second floor, the studio gets amazing sunlight during the day. I chose a place by the windows and it felt good to have the sun shining on me as I pushed through my workout. My instructor was Emery and she was great! She introduced herself to me before the class started, gave me some pointers, and then stuck around after to answer my questions about what I can do at home to improve for my next class! I really liked that we were lifting or pulsing to a beat. Much easier to get behind increasing the burn I was feeling. A tip for everyone reading: I wore leggings that were a polyester blend and they provided zero friction when we were working out on the carpet, opt for a cotton blend. Also, you'll need socks. Not sure if the grips are necessary, but I'm sure they help. I saw a few fellow attendees not wearing socks and that gave me the heeby-jeebies, so I wish that policy was more strongly enforced. Weights, mats, and balls are provided so just bring your grip socks and get ready to have a fun workout! read more

First time trying barre was at this location. I was very skeptical of barre & didnt really want to try it but figured I'd push myself out of my comfort zone and I'm really glad I did. I really enjoy Focus Barre & Yoga! While I can only speak about the Barre classes I've come to really love taking classes here. First of all-- this is one of the most affordable Barre spots in the city. Secondly they have extremely convenient class times and it's not overly packed in my experience most of the time. Thirdly they have lockers for free which is AMAZING for after work classes too soothe my anxiety about leaving my work laptop abandoned for an hour. I generally take the Barre 45 classes bc I am a wimp and it's 15 minutes less of pain than the normal length classes. I take these during lunch too and I appreciate the express workout, I can make it back to my desk without getting sweaty in an hour or so. It's an awesome break in the day. I love the tunes that are played through high quality speakers in the studio. Most instructors have great playlists, I enjoy different moves in almost all classes and I like most of the instructors! I do think adjustments should be made more in class to make things more safe and less robotic. This workout is also generally friendly on the joints but it can be tough on your back/knees depending on the move. This is also a friendly and non pretentious atmosphere to workout in. I have primarily tried the barre classes only, I have not tried the yoga classes so I can't comment on those. There is some variety with the classes, some cardio mixed in so that's a plus. I would say it is a typical style barre class, generally works the whole body and you will certainly leave sore. However, after a while it does get a bit monotonous. I generally mix in a couple barre classes into my normal workout routine. The cardio class is fun and gets you moving but isn't a ton of cardio so you would definitely need to supplement with cardio in your workout routine if you are looking for cardio. The instructors are great and generally very willing to adjust your form. And the staff is very friendly. There is a slightly higher barre at the end of the room for those of you who are also taller. Other things : You need grippy socks for class (obviously) Will certainly be mixing this into my workout routine read more

This place is amazing! And I cannot believe how quickly it helped me tone up my legs, arms and tummy for bikini season. There's tons of classes a day, which makes it great for any schedule. The instructors are all awesome, tons of energy and v informative. My first three barre classes ever were at focus, and it's safe to say I'm an addict. ClassPass review This studio is my favorite in the Rittenhouse area. The facilities and studio is clean, pretty, and updated. Everyone is super nice and the instructors are great. When you enter you go up the stairs and you will be able to check in and leave your stuff in different cubbies. I come here for barre. The barre studio is a pretty purple color and has carpet, everyone is required to wear socks or the grip socks. The bar is lined all around the walls of the class. All the equipment is provided. You will definitely get a sweat out of the barre classes. read more

The soundtrack to my life should be barre , eat , rave , repeat . I am very happy with Focus Barre and the staff here. I previously attended barre at another well known studio , and though there are a few differences the overall workout is barre . The instructors at Focus spend a little more time on arms and thighs but less time on abs and seat . My arms now look like I should be registered at the gun show so I'm definitely not complaining. The early class is @6:30 so this gives me an extra few minutes of rest which is nice . They currently only offer an early class on Wednesday and Friday but I've heard a few rumors that this will change (hopefully to everyday ) The studio is small and a little cramped when the ladies are packed in but I love the music selection ( all house all the time ) the occasion classic hip hop song will come on which always makes me smile. If you are in a pinch they carry sip-n-glo juices for a quick pick me up. I have my fingers crossed they start selling some apparel. Price is pretty legit an unlimited monthly is 150.00 which is very reasonable when you see the prices for other studios in the city. I can certainly manage budgeting a new booty into my monthly expenses. Give this place a try I don't think you will be disappointed. read more

They have decent prices on packages, but they're also part of ClassPass which makes three classes feel like a bargain each month! I love how clean the facilities are, and bright. No shower, but small price to pay for the location. They share the space with BodyCycle so sometimes the area can get crowded, but folks pretty much know where they're going and get out of each other's way. The workout seems super harmless. It seems like typical girly stuff where you just look cute and only move your body minimally and never sweat. All of the above are true, except that you're workout is actually killler. LACTIC ACID CENTRAL. I can feel my body sculpting and toning into the next Adriana Lima. (not really but ya know, reach for the moon) The excerices have a lot of small, easy movements, but its the repetition that makes it burn. You start with arms, move onto legs, onto da booty, end with abs. Recommendation for studio: change up the series. Each time seems to be essentially the same with minor variations and so-so music and instructors don't have their individual flare. I've done ballet for many years, but don't expect a dance-like workout here. The only things that make it ballet-ish are the barre that you do some non-dance stuff on and you do some pliees. The instructors are hit or miss. As you can imagine, this is the most uppity studio ever with every girl trying to get her sock bun perfect, etc. Just do your thing and you'll enjoy. read more

My favorite place for barre in Philly! This studio is clean, modern and makes you feel at home. There is truly no gym-timidation here. I've been coming regularly for months now and love that the girls who work at the front desk always greet you by name. I have been coming to Focus since I moved to Philly 7 years ago, and it has been an absolutely integral part of my health and wellness. The workouts are form-focused and to-the-rhythm and will make you WORK! Thanks to Focus, I have kept myself lean and super toned in spite of a crazy work schedule. The space is lovely and light-filled. Jill the owner is a fantastic instructor and person, and all of the instructors are frankly stellar. I can't see myself ever leaving Focus so long as I stay in Philly. read more

This place used to be out in University City, which was pretty cool and relaxed and I was worried it would lose it's charm when it moved to Center City. Though it's definitely more crowded (good for them!), it's still retained a nice mix of clients of all ages and shapes. Make sure to sign up ahead of time for a class! The barre classes are unique, challenging workout, where you will work all sorts of muscles you never knew you had and not get too sweaty. You can actually get away with not showering immediately after! I really like the cardio barre class, but they're all hard. Jill and Sara are my favorites and, in my opinion, the most challenging instructors. I haven't tried the yoga classes. Added bonus: Fun music and the new studio is really pretty with big windows. read more

Tried both a barre and a yoga class recently and both were amazing workouts. First, the yoga. Classes are held on the third floor in a heated room. While the room is hot, it's the kind of heat that is juuuuust right - not super hot like bikram and not barely hot to where you have to keep your long-sleeve shirt on. I attended a class that was rather small, but I received a lot of personal attention and adjustments, which I crave, especially since my body is way out of whack. The instructor put something that resembles icy hot on my back during one pose and it felt like what I imagine heaven feels like. The barre class was challenging, maybe even more so because I was sore from the yoga class a few days prior. You must wear socks in the barre studio and they sell them on site for $10. Not a bad deal if you plan on doing barre classes ever again. The class was fast-paced and the instructor introduced herself to me beforehand and gave me a quick run-down of what to expect, which I thought was helpful. My legs were definitely shaking during several portions of the class and the 60 minutes flew by. Overall, Focus is an awesome place to practice yoga and barre, so you can definitely get your money's worth if you like to practice both! read more

I was motivated to workout as soon as I got there - my instructor (Melissa) was SO fit! The studio overall is small, but clean and organized. The barre studio (2nd floor) smells amazing thanks to yoga right upstairs (3rd floor). Melissa instructed us to get our weights when we entered and pick a spot we'd like to be at. Workout: First time there, I found myself shaking the entire time - beginning from the warm-up! This place is no joke - I wasn't even sweating and my muscles were on FIRE. I wasn't sore or anything the next day but was definitely feeling it the rest of the week! I definitely suggest trying out a barre class at least once. read more

I've taken many classes at FBY and all of the teachers are great. I particularly like Melissa, Jill, Sara, Larissa, Julie, and the newest teacher Amanda. (I haven't taken them all it I am sure the others are good). The word is CONSISTENT with this place. You will get a consistent work out with well trained teachers. I found them through ClassPass but had been walking by there for years but would just do barre at Exhale when I travel (there is no Exhale in Philly yet) bachelor other barre blades I had taken just weren't as good as Exhale. This place is the closest you will get but it's more personal than Exhale and the prices are very fair. They also have a nice selection of Alo clothing and barre socks to add to your wardrobe... I have like 15 pairs of barre socks now. Few minor downsides. * Space is smallish so it can feel crowded but that's fine by me. I grew up taking dance in tiny studios and now teach in one where we fit twice as many ballerinas in. You get used to it and it's good for your spacial skills to take classes that close in. * You have to walk up a long flight of stairs before class. But hey, we're suppose to be working out so it should get easier, right? It's not as bad going down after class. * Classes fill up quickly. In ClassPass you will often not get your class of choice unless you register right away. But their prices are reasonable like I said so I just buy classes directly from them now. Worth it. :) * They're located next to this horrible spinning studio marked Body Cycle (see my review for them on Yelp and don't waste your time and money on such garbage). The rider from there often come over and use FBY's bathrooms and are loud. (the bathrooms are outside their studio and can be shared but shouldn't be.) They clog up the bathroom and sometimes block the entrance to the barre studio. That spinning studio also smells really bad (FBY does not) and the riders that come out of there are rude, often leaving their sweaty towel and clothes around while they use the shared water fountain. It's not fair but I think they'll be gone soon since their business have been negatively affected by Flywheel and Soul Cycle. I'm holding out hope. Focus Barre and Yoga is great and they really have a lots following. They have 2 studios here but I'm hoping they expand and add more classes because they are great classes with good teachers and very reasonable priced. read more

I love this barre studio! Barre is my favorite workout and I've tried every studio in the city. I love that this studio also has yoga so I can change up my routine a couple times a week. Sara is my favorite barre instructor! She keeps the class moving at a fast pace and will have you shaking for an hour. Hannah is my favorite yoga instructor. I love this place. I just realized I haven't reviewed them since they moved from university city. The classes here are amazing, the staff is friendly, and I love the new studio. My favorite thing is that each instructor switches up the pace, style, and timing oft he class so you can come often and never get bored. Also, I have really bad knees from sports injuries and I have found that every instructor is really helpful with helping me modify exercises to still get a ton out of the workout without harming myself. You will thank yourself if you check this place out and stick with it. read more

Focus Barre & Yoga is one of my favorite studios in the city. Their barre classes are always different and challenge me every time (your abs will burn and your legs and arms will be sore!). I love how they utilize different props in each class: ball, loop resistance bands, weights, pillows and more. Their yoga classes are also amazing. They offer more traditional classes, hot yoga and also yoga sculpt classes, all of which are great. The studios are always clean and staff is friendly. The instructors are all knowledgeable and will offer correction and feedback to help you perfect your form. I have been going to FB&Y for a couple of years and more recently got an unlimited month. Focus Barre Yoga is a great workout! The front desk staff is so friendly. I'm consistently impressed with the instructors that find new ways to challenge your workout and incorporate props to vary your routine. I have only taken barre classes, but I look forward to trying yoga soon. The only thing holding Focus back from its fifth star is the dearth of changing rooms. The studio shares two bathrooms with Body Cycle which can be inadequate in the after class rush. That said, i enjoy the experience at FBY and look forward to many leg-shaking workouts in the future! read more

So far so good. I was really looking forward to the opening of this place because I love pure barre and I already go to body cycle pretty regularly. I went to the opening night 5:30 barre class before my 6:30 spin class. It was very similar to the moves in pure barre, although I think they spent a little more time on arms and thighs, and a little less on seat and abs. The room is a little small, but the temperature was right so that I wasn't sweating on people. The prices are very reasonable, and I'm looking forward to going back for more. I just hope they change some of the class times, an early morning 6, 6:30, or 7 would be nice, and a few more 6:30pm's would be great. I know they are coming from university city, but in center city, most of us aren't students and need to be at work by 9, so those 9:30 classes aren't very convenient. A condensed noon time class would be great too! read more

I love the new studio! I'm so glad they moved from 40th street. The old studio was great, not so much the location. Same great barre classes and great discounts, with NO attitude! Then on top of that there's yoga now, which I love too. I was scared to take it at first because it's "heated" but it's nothing like Bikram yoga. I barely noticed it the heat at all. They also do the longest and hardest ab sequence of all the studios I've tried. The instructors also do a really good job of mixing up the sequences and playlists so that each class is different. You can go every day and not get bored. They also offer yoga classes so you're getting a two in one membership. read more

I picked up barre workouts for the first time in October 2013, and quickly became addicted to shake. I've taken a lot of classes throughout the city, but I think I'm going to stick with Focus Barre and Yoga. The 19th and Chestnut location is perfect for after work classes. The instructors are friendly and helpful, and although I've only been there for a month, they know be my name, and always greet me with a smile. The classes are very leg and arm intensive, which is why I think I prefer this studio to others, as these are the areas I'm most focused on toning. But glutes, abs and back are certainly not neglected. This studio is VERY reasonable priced compared to other barre studios I've been to. I think this changes the clientele who are drawn to it. This is the most bohemian group of barre goer's I've seen. I think it makes the experience more fun and I love that this studio has encouraged a lot of begginers to pick up barre. read more

Just wanted to write an update after coming to barre classes at Focus Barre & Yoga now for 2-3 months. I usually come 4-6 times a week because I'm addicted, and because I was trying to get in shape for my wedding this past weekend. The transformation I've seen in my body over the past 2-3 months has been incredible. I have toned muscles that I didn't even know existed. I have lost inches off my waist and and bra-line. INCHES! And I was a size 0 to begin with and simply looking to tone up for my wedding. I have gotten so many compliments on my arms, all thanks to both Danielles, Sara, Jill, and Amy. All the instructors I've tried are awesome...I like every single one of them. I'm so happy I started coming here...it truly is the best barre studio! read more

After going to their studio in university city, I was so happy they moved to my neighborhood. I like it a lot more than pure barre- plus it's less expensive. There are a couple complaints though- last class I was in was a bit too crowded...it's a small room and I think there were just too many people and some exercises were not possible due to space. Also I like the instructors a lot but I noticed they don't seem to correct anyone on their form. A girl in front of me was doing things completely wrong and they never came over to help her. Lastly as someone else mentioned, they didn't ask people to clean their mats after class! Major downfall...but I'm hoping their are just working out the kinks. read more

This place has become a little bit of a secret addiction of mine. I'm the only guy I ever see in any of the Barre classes and I really don't care. Eliakim is by far my favorite of the instructors thus far, she offers the most corrections if your form is wrong which is always helpful to the class--and I've noticed not every one of the instructors takes time to do so. Sarah Baldwin is a close second favorite (and why doesn't she teach more?). Melissa's class was a little more Boot Campish I would say.. I still feel the burn three days later. Larissa has been my least favorite of the instructors personally--but I absolutely recommend you try out different instructors, they all have different teaching methods and no one class has been the same. read more

Barre is my favorite strength training workout. I look forward to it every week because it's challenging, fun and goes quickly. We start with arms, then glutes and quads and finish with abs/core. We stretch in between. The teachers always offer modifications in case you need them. I saw the difference in my shoulders and abs within just a few weeks of going 2-3/week. It would be cool if the studio let people give suggestions for songs for their playlists like Body Cycle Studio does. I highly recommend coming to this studio!
