Pat is an INCREDIBLE fishing guide and human being!…read more As experienced anglers, this was mine and brother-in-law's first ice fishing experience ever, and it was an amazing and raw experience. Working with Pat was so great! It was easy to communicate with Pat through text and phone calls, to understand the possible fishing conditions with constant fluctuation in weather. Pat is so knowledgable, I felt so comfortable learning from him as we picked a date to fish. We met Pat at a staging area, and he drove us in his Polaris out to the Webber Lake, as the roads were blocked off to snowmobiles only. The Polaris was such a treat to ride, protected from the cold with the heat blasting. It was so fun to just ride through the snow and see the beautiful snowy landscape. Once we got to the frozen lake, Pat made sure it was safe by leading first, carrying all the equipment with him by himself. Pat had already checked the day before and week before to ensure the ice was in good condition to be on and also to fish. I really appreciate his thoroughness for safety. Once we got to the spot, we set up shelter since it was forecasted to snow up to 1-inch in the afternoon. Little did we know, it snowed HEAVILY with harsh winds soon after we set up shelter and started fishing. Thank you Pat for providing us the shelter and warmth as a mini-snowstorm blew all around us, what seemed like a foot of snow. After the shelter and drilling holes, we got to fishing. Pat provided all the equipment needed, and all the hands all training you could succeed with. Pat taught us how to use the Garmin Livescope and how to finesse the lures to entice the fish, catch their attention but not scare them away. The Livescope made the experience like a video game, seeing our lures bob up and down, and thermal signatures of the fish grow and fade in out of view. It happened to be a very slow day for us, with the snowstorm it made the fishing unpredictable. Despite this, we hit our limits of 5 trouts each! We caught beautiful Cutthroat Trout keepers, and also Brook trout that we released. Each hookset felt like a tremendous victory on top of the ice. Pat is also an amazing human being. We enjoyed the conversations we had with him, learning about fishing, the area, and his own life experiences. I highly recommend Pat for ice fishing around Truckee/North Tahoe. He's one of the best fishing guides I've ever worked with. I plan to come back when it's warmer to chase some Kokanee!

John is an amazing fishing guide…read more Background first -- I've done a lot of fishing in my life -- fished with many guides, not all fly fishing but I have fly fished a fair amount. My son (11 yo) is my fishing partner these days. He's been fishing since he was 3 and loves every aspect. This was his third time fly fishing. We went on a full day fly fishing trip with John on the Little Truckee River. As a longtime fisherman, I don't judge a guide on how many fish we are able to catch -- many times conditions are unpredictable and catching is not a guarantee; however, I do judge a guide on their preparedness, their willingness to change things if things aren't working (location, choice of lure, etc), and most importantly their attitude and knowledge. John is 10/10 on every aspect. He's very personable. Clearly loves fishing, John is upbeat, excited to teach. I told John early on that I wanted the focus to be on my son -- to teach him his fly casting techniques. Some guides are burned out and it shows -- not John at all. He gets excited seeing the hatch on the river... explaining to us which flies are hatching and then showing us his hand tied flies (his own) and trying to match the hatch. John was well prepared. He had many sizes of waders and wading boots for my son. He had the flies we needed and his equipment was great. He brought extra rods already rigged so we could change rigs easily without waiting. He changed flies and nymphs if he felt they weren't getting hits. He put us on many fish. We must have hooked 20-25 fish and landed maybe half that. My son hooked and landed a trophy 20" rainbow. Hooking a fish of this caliber is difficult enough but landing it is very challenging -- John taught my son and coached him through landing this fish. He was so patient with both of us. Memories were made on this trip! I've fished with many guides in my life and I have to say that John is one of the best I've ever worked with.
