For those of the us that work long hours. But once a year, they stay open till Midnight! There are many reasons why I love Midnight Madness. Here are my top three: 1. Shopping local! All of those local businesses like Capital Teas, Capital Custom Tailors and re:source all got visits and purchases from me. While I am a fan of getting good deals I'm also a fan of the neighborhood shops. without them, there would be no neighborhood. While I could easily buy anything they have from Amazon.com, Amazon.com will not make my community any homier. 2. Free drinks! Yes, I think I got a drink from Zachery's, Niland's, La Petite Gallery, Horse Boutique, Capital Custom Tailors, and who knows where else had a drink. Most of the shops also had hot chocolate and tea to balance out all of the drinks. Free drinks and shopping...they really know how to how to make shopping fun! Love it! 3. Deals! Most of the shops had specials and sales for just tonight only. So it is to your best interest to come out and check them out. I always score great deals with Helly Hanson during midnight madness. So this is a good time to come out and get some deals at DTA. Parking can be a pain. Noah Hillman was FULL when I got there. So if you can take the bus/shuttle or have someone drop you off. It was a bit corwded and parking was filled up. This is definitely one of my favorite shopping events that I look forward to every year!

There was an event going on with the featured artist next door in the church building, but we were unable to stop by yet still enjoyed his artwork in the first room. It was a short but sweet trip and I learned a lot of new things about African American History in Maryland, which was awesome.

I just visited the U.S. Naval Academy Museum for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and I was…read morereally impressed. The museum is located in Preble Hall on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy, so you'll need to check in/go through security at the visitor entrance (they check ID and run your bags through a metal detector), but it was very fast. Then it's just a quick walk over to Preble Hall. When we entered, we welcomed to the museum by two docents, who briefly explained what could be found in the museum, including their favorite parts of the collection (which was perfect, because we had less than hour in the museum before they closed). The museum is two floors. The first floor has exhibits on the development of the Navy and the history of the Naval Academy. The second floor houses an incredible collection of models of warships from the 17th-19th centuries (one of the largest collections of ship models). I wasn't sure this would be that interesting to me, but the docents had really highlighted this part of the collection during their introduction. I'm so glad we trusted them, because it was fascinating. One part of this collection really blew me away - the bone model display. It might sound morbid, but these models were carved from the bones of beef rations given to French prisoners of war during their incarceration in England (Anglo-French wars of 1756-1815). I had no idea about any of this history (does anyone?!), and it was really interesting. But the first floor also had amazing artifacts, and I learned a lot. Overall, this museum (also free, by the way) was pretty great. Even if you're not typically interested in naval history, this museum is special. It's well-curated and interesting. And those docents were wonderful! I'm sure I'll be back to take in what I didn't have time to on my first visit!

There is so much history here from the kunta kinte - Alex Haley memorial to the U.S. Naval Academy to the state house and tons of little hidden gems , it's definitely worth a day outing. Parking is pay to park and starts at $4.50 for an hour but you can add as you like using your phone. Plenty of restaurants, ice cream shops and retail stores but if you have little ones in strollers, the sidewalks are brick lined and narrow fyi. If you are looking to book a boat ride , there are tons of options as well. If you've never been, what are you waiting for and don't forget to try Maryland crab cakes !!!!

Time estimate to look at the State House and grounds: 20-40 mins. Metered parking on street around State House. You can peek into the State Assembly and State Senate rooms, plus view a few other rooms that have been reconstructed for historical accuracy. One such room is Old Senate chamber where George Washington resigned his commission as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army on December 23, 1983. There are statues and chairs that set the scene. From 1783-1784 the U.S. Congress of Confederation was housed here, and ratified the Treaty of Paris, formally ending the Revolutionary War on May 7, 1784. Just off the grounds is the Thurgood Marshall Memorial Statue, which shows Marshall as a young lawyer. A nearby bench shows Donald Gaines Murray whose entrance into the Law School of the University of Maryland marked Marshall's first important victory in his struggle for school integration. Another bench shows figures of two children representing Marshall's most important achievement, Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka et. al.

There are numerous rooms to check out, some even have interactive touch screen features, that was kind of neat to see what it was like hundreds of years ago. The architecture is neat. The staircase is long but manageable, but there is a tiny elevator that you can take as well. The grounds outside are nicely manicured and there are some things to see as well including cannons and a little building that is quite old but packed with history. Annapolis was a fun place to visit and if you do, check out the state house.

The staff member working when we visited (his name was Howard) was really friendly and helpful. He explained about the history of the building and recommended a path through the exhibits to get the most of out of our visit. We learned about a lot about the Chesapeake - its history, the its health and recovery... We learned a lot about oysters, too. There's a fun interactive game you can play where you balance oyster harvesting and the health of the Bay that entertained us (two adults nearing 40) for a while! Then there's a small gallery with photographs of the Bay and some outdoor exhibits, too. They offer sails on a certain days as well, so check out the schedule online before you visit if that's something you're interested in. It might be small, but it's a great little museum. Definitely worth a visit on a visit or trip to Annapolis.
