Having danced in communities across the country and even abroad (and having been a performer and…read moreorganizer in several such communities), I can't recommend PICD highly enough. There is no other dance community, so far as I'm aware, which is more welcoming to newcomers, more appreciative of the music and performers on stage, more aware of how to be as inclusive as possible to as many people as possible, or more filled with a smiling, laughing, intergenerational group of wonder humans dancing together. PICD simply checks all the boxes. Seriously, whether you've been dancing for 30 years or you've never tried contra before and are simply curious, an evening spent at the Portland Intown Contra Dance will not be an evening wasted. Go enjoy!

I go to this dance often and it's amazing what a soul-cleansing fun experience it is! There is…read morealways a live band and that adds to the fun energy quite a bit (and is a great way to learn about regional artists!). My experience has been that everyone is really friendly and it's a very safe space. I used to take a date but now I just go by myself and it's never a problem finding someone to dance with (or if you are feeling shy for the moment that is OK too). This is one of those activities that if you don't know what it is, you might not have any idea how fun it is and how easy it is to get started. They have a tutorial that starts at 7 to show you the ropes but you don't even need to go to that if you can't make it by 7 -- before each dance you get a run-down of how it will go. It can be fun figuring it out as you go! I've noticed the beaming smiles on people's faces as they start to dance for the first time. I don't even think they realize they are smiling. Check it out!

I offer the below as a first hand recap of my experience with the band, Brandy - in particular, the…read moreband's manager - Stephen. Stephen blatantly failed to honor our contract. In addition to telling us that we shouldn't have canceled our wedding & that we made the wrong decision (which is always nice to hear when you've had to cancel your wedding because of a global pandemic) - he claims Covid is not a real thing & "the truth will soon be revealed."  I literally cannot make this up & would be happy to share additional detail if helpful. This should serve as a warning to anyone considering working with Stephen ---- DO NOT. March 2020 - Original contact with the band/Stephen for our late August 2020 wedding. As covid had already exploded, part of our contract was a clause (exact text: "In the event the date needs to be rescheduled due to corona virus, the full deposit amount will be transferred to a new date in which the band is available. If the Purchaser chooses a date that Brandy is not available, the full deposit ($2,000) will be refunded".) July 2020 - inform Stephen that we'll be unable to have our wedding in Aug 2020 & that it's been rescheduled to the same weekend in 2021. Stephen sends a new contract omitting our covid clause AND upping the price of the performance!  After many back & forths - Stephen finally agrees to stand up to what the contract says & rescheduled the performance for the agreed upon price, WITH the covid clause. painful. Late Feb 2021 - We write & call to inform Stephen that due to Covid uncertainty - we will be canceling our plans for August 2021 & will be having a small family only mini-wedding in Boston in March. Due to this - I ask for our deposit back. -- Stephen claims that we're not due the deposit back because we picked a date that they cannot perform. The reason they could not perform was because the Massachusetts State Govt was not allowing more than 10 people to gather indoors, nor permitting any live music performances at the time (mid March 2020). -- Stephen also calls our original venue behind our back to check if we really cancelled. -- Stephen claims we're "using covid as an excuse to get a refund." -- Stephen claims that WE are breaching the contract. -- Stephen asks us to change our wedding day... literally, he says we should have the wedding in May since that's when indoor venues can open & this way they can perform. ***note; I would be happy to share these emails with anyone... you literally cannot make this stuff up ! ! ! March 17 - We finally get $1500 of the $2000 deposit back. Note the 1 month turn around, and likely ~ 5 hours in total arguing on the phone with him...painful. -- Stephen claims: - No other weddings canceled - People have 'the time of their life not wearing masks & feeling free." - That we 'jumped the gun on canceling our wedding' - 'All of the corruption going on will be revealed and the truth will come out" I'll leave it to you to form your own conclusion - but if you can.... RUN.It's a shame because the band looks great (...unfortunately it wouldn't surprise me if the band doesn't even know this saga existed). Fortunately this is the ONLY $ we lost on the wedding. I say that only to highlight the fact of how great everyone else was to work with & how immediately they offered to refund given the unprecedented times (our venue even encouraged Stephen to do the same!).Poor form, Stephen.  Poor form.

He was very friendly, professional, and helped answer all of our questions. I'm also grateful that he told us people usually love the Hava Nagila song regardless of their faith - that song was incredibly fun and practically every guest was up dancing! The band made our wedding incredible and we would suggest the Brandy Band to anybody planning a wedding. People are still talking about how great the band was. They are totally worth it!
