I went towards the end of the evening near closing time, so the cookies and pastries had already been picked over quite a bit. Luckily, I was here to get a gingerbread man, and I picked out the cutest one ever (see photos)! I've rarely met a gingerbread I didn't like, and this version was a-okay. It wasn't as spicy as I'd like, but it had a nice chewy crunch to the cookie that made the texture quite satisfying. Of course, as is my method, I nibbled off his arms and legs first. I'm not such a fan of the icing, and Gilg's version I found quite bland. It was sweet, but not tasty. My cookie was individually wrapped in plastic which made it easy to reseal to enjoy later. I was able to take a few more nibbles on my train to Paris the next afternoon. And did I mention how stinking cute the cookie was? The little wide eyes and "o" face...just adorable. I could see these making excellent gifts to take home from Europe, if you could keep the cookies from breaking during transit. The other goods on offer looked tasty, but if the gingerbread man is any indication, this may be one of those "all looks, bland taste" type of bakeries. The bakery is a standard, small European bakery offering streudels, breads, pastries, eclairs, and the like. I have only had the small cookies that are sold by weight, brownie, and streudel, all of which were simply divine. It is hard for me to accurately assess pricing as I live in Zurich where everything is overpriced and don't taste nearly half as good as the offerings at this bakery. I typically get a kilo (what can I say?) of cookies and a brownie and spend around 15 euro. The women are friendly and understand enough English to allow you to pick out your own cookies that they pack up for you. The only drawback was during my last visit a very tacky U.K. family came in and started taking a ton of photos (with flash). After a short wait outside we were able to get a table for two and were promptly served. Tea service runs from 11-2PM so we had to indulge but we chose to split it so that we could enjoy other foods at the Christmas Markets. The sandwiches were delicious and my wife doesn't care for salmon or mayonnaise yet she enjoyed every bite of sandwiches that contained either. The baked goods were perfectly flavored and the sweets were not too sweet just like we like them. I particularly enjoyed a cottage cheese without curds served with fried onions as well as green onions...would have never thought to create that combination. The caramel latte was quite delicious thus we agreed that everything we ordered was fantastic and the ambiance can't be beat.
