Maison Louis Latour is not open to the public and I am an absolute amateur when it comes to wine so I had to keep asking myself: "What did I do to deserve such am amazing experience?!"
It started with a quick walk into town to the winery's offices where we checked in with the receptionist and she welcomed my buddy and I for our super exclusive appointment. A nice English girl named Christina came down and quickly escorted us to a car and drove us to the facilities. The land was massive with what appeared to be miles of grape vines covering every visible inch. The factory/mansion/estate was plopped right in the middle and a long driveway took us directly to the front door. It was extremely quiet and it was quickly apparent that we were the only ones there with a very exclusive tour in store for us.
Like most wineries we got to see the all the machinery that goes into making the wine but the real treat cam when we traveled over twenty meters underground to the Latour family private collection. The caves were dark and cool and you could literally smell the hundreds of years of wine making engrained into the stone walls. The floors were immaculate but century old mold crawled over every bottle growing thicker with age. We were clearly in the heart of the private stock and were surrounded by more 300,000 bottles dating back to 1850. Unreal.
When we settled in got a bit more comfortable the three of us stood around a table of six $100 plus bottle sipping and telling stories. The wine was fantastic, the setting felt like it was straight out of a movie and the host was incredible generous. I could not have asked for a more legit French wine tasting experience.
If you are ever in the area pull any strings you have to try and grab one of these tours. You will not be disappointed and it is worth putting in the effort to gain access. read more
