When it changed to Bob FM, I was pretty disappointed and I didn't know what to expect. For awhile, I wasn't a fan at all, but now I really don't mind it. My music tastes have changed, and I now find most of the Top 40 radio stations really annoying, since they overplay a lot of songs and the songs that are popular now just aren't as good as older favorites. This makes Bob FM so much easier for me to listen to, as they plays 80s, 90s, random music, and even 70s music on Sundays, and I don't have to worry about yet another techno song repeating itself incessantly in my brain. There are times, however, when I don't particularly like the selection of music they're playing at the time, but when they play one of those songs I haven't heard in awhile and almost forgot about, I think "YES!" They have come a LONG way since their early days in the late 90's. Unfortunately, they continue to broadcast on the AM dial, but with technology and the relatively recent sale to the Bell/CTV conglomerate, the station is streamed over the internet. They are the flagship and the official radio station of the Ottawa Senators - they broadcast every Ottawa Senators game live. If CBC happens to be showing the Senators on the tube (with Bob Cole doing the play-by-play), I mute the TV and listen to the radio broadcast. With the NHL players being locked out, it's nice that the station recently added an extensive play-by-play partnership with the Ottawa 67's. In recent years, the Team has provided local fans the opportunity to follow the Binghamton Senators via radio broadcasts. The Team 1200 broadcasts a wide assortment of sports programming with lots of local flavour. My one and only major complaint is the station continues to stream Fox Sports Radio at night. I am sure that late night vampires would appreciate local Canadian content during the wee hours. I know I did, during 3 years in Toronto with the Fan 590.

In 1975, CKCU became the first campus-based radio station Canada! It's on 93.1 FM, aka "The Mighty…read more93.1", and is broadcasted from the Carleton University campus. It's a registered charity that is funded by students, members of the community, program sponsorships, and donors, with an annual funding drive to support the station. Because the station is so involved with the community, it advertises and takes part in music, arts, and and other local events. They also have a radio camp for kids, where they can learn how to write, record, and edit advertisements, interviews, sound effects, and other audio files. What's great about CKCU is that it's run mostly by volunteers, and they take music submissions, like CDs, Vinyls, and digital files. It also has a live broadcast host at all times, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and it even has live bands from time to time. It's very multicultural and appeals to many audiences, as it has at least a hundred programs with different formats and styles, genres of music, and in various languages. Country music stars in general are very friendly and warm bunch of entertainers. I have to admit to being very impressed with the Canadian talent I have had the pleasure of seeing at the local fairs and country music festivals around the Ottawa area, as far away as Calabogie. Canada should be pround for having such great talent in our population! This radop station has been active for over 40 years, and has changed and morphed with the times, as the music has changed and announcers have come and gone. IMHO, The "Classics show" on Sunday mornings is a bit too country music for me (although I do like the occasional Johnny Cash, or rock 'n roll cross overs from the '60s. Oh, and Dolly Parton. And... oh But I digress!) As with many current radio stations, they offer a rewards program, where you can earn points to be spent on a variety of things such as contests or tickets. The station is often present at different events around the city, inviting the public to come on up and say hello. The announcers also are very friendly. The occasion of this visit to the station was to pick free up tickets to an event at the E&Y centre. Thank you Y101!

I am a big CBC fan. News, entertainment, music, local, national - love it. I have been asked to…read morespeak on the radio several times (usually about Ottawa pot-holes...) but each time the coordination of the shows has been very efficient. What I really love about CBC is that they want to give a good overall view of what'a happening in Ottawa - not just the juicy new bites, but the good news stories too. Keep up the good work CBC - I'm sure I'll be back again someday, hopefully with a good news story about Yelp ;)

I used to read it on the bus or O-Train when I was a student at Carleton. The paper is mostly comprised of local news, but they do include national and global news as well. There's also a business section, but I find that Metro Ottawa covers a lot more sports and entertainment. I also feel like it's geared towards younger audiences, like teens and young adults, which is probably why there's so much sports and Hollywood news. There's even a section at the end with horoscopes, a crossword, and a Sudoku puzzle, which are actually quite popular amongst those that want to kill time while in transit. You'll also notice a ton of ads, but that's to ensure that it stays free.

I was recently on Sparks Street for Canada Day celebrations. I hadn't been on this street in well…read moreover a decade. It's funny how I used to spend so much time along this street, shopping or taking a stroll while visiting Ottawa. Returning it to felt different and familiar simultaneously. I was in front of the CBC Radio-Canada building. There was a local Ottawa singer performing. It was great. Moments later, it was all rain and thunderstorms, and we all dispersed. Adapting to change is the norm these days. Same goes with Radio-Canada. Radio-Canada used to be on the AM radio dial when it first went live. It switched over to the FM side, which is still the case these days. It's 90.7 FM. What I like about streaming is that you can get any channel that your heart desires, no matter where you are in the world. I listen to a handful of French podcasts these days. I also like listening to French radio stations. I blame this habit thanks to taking a bunch of courses in French in university, which prompted me to subscribe to L'actualité, the French magazine, for years. Instead of print, I have switched over to audio. 90.7 FM is the lighter version of L'actualité in audio format. It airs a news-talk programming format, all in French. The studios and offices are located in this building. It was pretty cool seeing it. I don't know if tours are offered, but I'd love to check it out. I've only been to the CBC building in Winnipeg, but that was strictly television. I didn't bother looking up to see an antenna of sorts on top of the building. I was too busy watching the performer sing and play his guitar. When the downpour occurred with lightning, looking up was out of the question! This station broadcasts Les matins d'ici, which you'd expect during weekday mornings. Locals need to know what's going on during rush hour, whether they are commuting or staying at home to work. There's also Sur le vif that also airs on weekdays, but during the afternoon. I believe that there are some programs that come in from Montreal. They are normally at odd hours that I'm not tuned in.
