Maybe this place was hyped up too much? Or I was feeling extra hungry when I went and my dish wasn't super satisfying... Things we ordered which were just aight: - Herbed Broken Eggs (asparagus, zucchini, pecorino, onion & oregano salsa served with freedom loaf bread): light & clean, but wasn't very filling. Probably should have added bacon! Haha ... it was also a little on the blander side in terms of taste! - Green Eggs Benedict with House cured slab bacon: bacon and eggs were tasty but overall the dish was a little bland as the traditional eggs benny hollandaise sauce was replaced by a green sauce! - Creamy Mushroom + Poached Egg: tasty but too sweet! Overall the presentation was lovely, the service and restaurant environment were also great, but I really value the taste of the food and this place didn't really satisfy my tastebuds ... The pancakes are out-of-this-world...!!!!! My friend was so excited to take us here. To be honest, I was a little skeptical at first. Like it's just pancakes, could it really be that good? 1000% YES, the pancakes were THAT GOOD! Plated with what I think is raspberry cotton candy, raspberry infused marshmallow, a rich mascarpone sauce, and vanilla ice cream; each bite was an experience! Don't forget about the the handcrafted maple syrup! It's truly a phenomenal dish that easily makes it into the top of my best breakfasts I've ever had. I also tried the bibimbap. Very good, but not like the traditional bibimbap one would expect. They use quinoa instead of rice and it's a cold dish. The flavors were great, but I would usually like the food to be warmer. The kalbi burger was also very good. Every dish was beautifully plated like a work of art. The whole restaurant itself is aesthetic AF, lol. The berry smoothie was delicious and super refreshing. Brussel sprouts and fried chicken sides were also worth trying. The pancakes stole the show though. Next time, I would just come and order two orders just to myself and eat it all. I think I'm in love. We came on the Sunday morning. Luckily there wasn't a wait, but you do have to hunt around a bit for street parking. The staff was extremely friend and helpful in ordering. If you are looking for the perfect inner city breakfast spot, then Major Sprout may just be the best choice. It ticks all the boxes - delicious food, great coffee and efficient service. Major Sprout is owned by David Lee, who also runs the popular eateries Dear Jervois in Herne Bay and Little King in Milford. I admit, Major Sprout opened in November 2015... so I am a bit late to the party. But it was definitely worth the wait, especially for their famous and Insta-worthy buttermilk pancakes. We visited Major Sprout last weekend for breakfast. The cafe is tucked down Graham Street, just up the road from Victoria Park. Inside, the fit out is modern, light and airy, with greenery in every corner and plenty of seating options. We arrived quite early (8.30am) so there was no need to make a reservation, but any later, I would definitely recommend booking a table. To start, I enjoyed a Mocha (using Flight Coffee), which was the perfect temperature, creamy and gone in a flash. My sister also loved their Turmeric Latte. If you're not into coffee or fancy lattes, they also serve Storm & India Tea, smoothies and a range of cold drinks, including homemade sodas. Their food menu is extensive, offering the usual breakfast/brunch fare, with healthy, gluten and dairy free options and some interesting dishes which have a Korean/Japanese flare. For example, you can order Congee Rice Porridge or Okonomiyaki for breakfast (something I have not seen on a breakfast menu yet in Auckland) and for lunch, Bibimbap, a classic Korean dish and one of my favourite meals. Also loved the fact that you can order a side of kimchi! For breakfast, my Mum and sister both ordered the 3 x Scrambled Free Range Eggs on The Midnight Baker's nutty Freedom Loaf and also with Paleo toast (which is made with coconut flour). The scrambled eggs were cooked to perfection. And of course, I HAD to order the Buttermilk Pancakes. These were a stand out dish, with light and fluffy pancakes and the perfect accompaniments - creamy almond mascarpone, crunchy butterscotch, toasted marshmallows and topped with baby pink candy floss and freeze dried strawberries. You have the option to add vanilla ice cream or pancetta, so I went with the latter. Italian bacon and pancakes go so well, especially when drenched in maple syrup! Major Sprout's Buttermilk Pancakes are definitely the best I have had in Auckland. Another bonus - you get your own bottle of Noble Tuthilltown Bourbon Barrel Matured Maple Syrup. Unlimited maple syrup = one very happy Georgie. Food aside, the service was great - staff were super friendly and efficient, water glasses were always topped up and we didn't have to wait long for our meals. I think I am seriously sad -- I have returned to Major Sprout 3x now and ordered the Creamy Mushrooms every time just changing it very slightly. Obviously not an egg eater, the cafe was more than happy to alter the dish to please your preference. To be honest if you feel like you don't want/need think the egg - swap it out for the home made hash brown! It is chunky and the crunch is perfect, otherwise for a delicate touch, order avocado Whats great --- everything! The staff are happy and the service is timely. The Creamy Mushrooms are served in a rich brown sauce and dangerously moorish. Major Sprout have displayed great consistency. A few other pluses to order from the menu is the Mushroom and Gnocchi. Dear Jervois and Little King has already won the hearts of many cafe goers and David Lee has once again set the bar for Auckland cafe culture with his third cafe, Major Sprout. It has been on my hit list for a while now, the combination of healthy options (think quinoa, super food smoothies) presented with delicate and precise plating. Once there, the fit out of the cafe is equally stunning, a slick and luminous space flooded with light. Both relaxing and sophisticated in equal measure. I couldn't resist the comforting pull of the gnocchi on the menu, served with pickled oyster mushrooms, pan-fried mushrooms, truffled potato gnocchi with a 62° hen's egg. Slow-cooked to a more runny and silken texture than the humble poached egg, it came delicately wobbling on the plate to our giddy delight. Each indulging mouthful was a slow chew to savour the truffled flavour of the gnocchi. Bibimbap has always been my favourite at Korean restaurants, especially the variation of the dish, dolsot bibimbap, where the rice is served in a hot stone bowl. The bottom of the bowl is coated with sesame oil so the layer of the rice touching the hot bowl is sizzled to a crisp golden brown layer. Top that with chilli paste and a raw egg cracked on top, it's an ultimate winter comfort food. Major Sprout's healthy rendition of the bibimbap is comprised of quinoa rice, tofu crumble, 62° hen egg, sautéed vegetables and chilli-jam and kimchi. It is served at room temperature and in my opinion lacks the kick and flavour of the traditional bibimbap. Perhaps a little more chilli jam and a stronger kick in the kimchi would bring it home. If going for lunch, another recommendation is the sous vide chicken. Beautifully moist, it is served with broccolini, smoked almonds, herb salsa and tarragon oil. As with other dishes on the lunch menu, eat slowly to savour the taste and make sure your brain has enough time to tell the stomach it is full. Bigger eaters should consider adding extras to it. Major Sprout lives up to its name and is no doubt a popular spot for those who call Auckland CBD their hood. From my experience, it deserves a dedicated trip for those brunch/cafe lovers too. Healthy and delicious. Not a combination of words that people can wholeheartedly put together with regular occurrence. But, Major Sprout has done it. Think: juices, smoothies, kombucha, salads and dishes overflowing with seasonal produce. The menu isn't all just "health" food mind you, there's also burgers and heavier items if you're dining with someone who doesn't have a new years resolution to watch their weight. Our waiter was so helpful in providing recommendations on what we should order to share. We settled on some serves of their sushi - $5 for two decent sized pieces and the beetroot salad which interestingly had beetroot prepared in a number of ways - pickled, roasted, raw etc. The sushi was good and would make a really great snack to have with coffee instead of the standard cake and coffee combo. Yes, they have coffee and it's good! The space itself is bright and breezy and it's hard to not feel good while sitting in such a good looking venue. While a little out of the way, it's well worth battling the traffic and fighting for a car park to visit this cute new addition to the Auckland scene. read more

Every item on the breakfast and lunch menus is a little bit different and a bit more interesting than usual. The former include Compressed watermelon and stonefruit, a local take on a croque monsieur called a Crunchy Gentleman and a Big Fill breakfast. The latter include chorizo and cheddar croquettes, sous vide chicken with Brocolini and almonds and Bibimbap, a satisfying combination of quinoa, crumbled tofu, egg and pork belly. Presented on rustic plates and sprinkled with on trend herbs and floral highlights, it's meals are almost too beautiful to eat. A range of smoothies including blueberry and basil, strawberries snd cream and peanut buttercup are refreshing summer accompaniments. I made eye contact with two wait staff to take our order and they both ignored me and proceeded to have a discussion by the till. Went to Major Sprout with some colleagues on a Friday. The decor is really quite thoughtfully done, with plenty of white space, complimented by an array of different seating arrangements. However, I have to say I was quite unimpressed with what I ordered. I had a bacon bap and a long black. They apparently smoke their own bacon, which might be a mistake, because it tasted incredibly ashy, as if I was eating the remains of a bonfire. The long black was under extracted. I was surprised it was served, because it clearly looked as such. The service was fine, and while I would say it's a little overpriced, it's not unreasonable for the area. Given that there's a selection of far better cafes nearby, I don't think I would return back here. The Mojo and Elk around Graham St are far better. read more

5 Having been a long time fan of Dear Jervois in Ponsonby, I couldn't resist the allure of checking out the DJ team's new inner city eatery: Major Sprout. Tucked away in the relative quiet of Graham Street, this clean and pristine wooden, sunlit and hanging plant laden cafe is definitely my fave new hipster haven in the CBD. Featured above are Major Sprouts Fantastic Pancakes with Mascarpone, Nut Granola and Figs. Trust me when I say this, the photo does not do this dish nearly enough justice, this dish IRL was the absolute embodiment of foodporn and it tasted just as good as it looked. The nut granola was a really nice touch adding texture and balance to the sweetness of the pancakes and mascarpone. We also tried the Big Fill (Big Breakfast) and absolutely adored the Agria Rosti and Homemade Baked Beans. Tried the matcha granola, the presentation was outstanding, with beautifully cut fruit, even a golden berry, with sweet delicious granola, the dish was quite tiny, then i see the price of it, $15!
