It is 'B Listed' by Historic Scotland and named after the big medieval-style Eglinton Tournament of 1839. There were many competing knights on horseback taking part in jousting and other events at the grand tournament and one of the participants was actually the future Napoleon III of France. Unfortunately the appalling weather and heavy rain completely ruined the proceedings things never change!! The 13th Earl of Eglinton, Archibald Montgomerie, had the cast iron and stone bridge built in a Gothic style and it was designed by the architect, David Hamilton. The bridge has been repaired and strengthened a few times over the years, especially after its partial collapse in 1936. The most recent renovation took place in 2008. I enjoyed walking over the bridge, and taking photos, recently on a visit to the park; it's a lovely place to walk and very rural.

We are Irish and if you are Irish you appreciate where I'm coming from. A baileys or Irish coffee is presented in a tall glass. We met Callum from Derry, he was super friendly, nice and made me a super Baileys coffee on night 2 - thank you Callum. In fact all the bar staff are lovely, they look after their customs well - Ivan and he can spell another gentleman All the staff @ Crown Plaza are lovely especially the reception staff, they go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. It's a super location, 2 stops on the train to the city with the train station 2 minute walk away.

The location in downtown Glasgow was also very good as we could do a 10 minute walk and get to many restaurants on St Vincent St and such. With a 20 minute walk, you could get to the nearby main shopping drag of Buchanan St. Walking about here and anywhere else in Scotland for that matter felt very safe. The breakfast buffet was extensive and delicious and omelets are made here unlike the other hotels we stayed at on this trip. My favorite part though was enjoying the extensive whisky list at their bar with my travel pal on our first night. I tried 3 delectable 12 year old Scotch single malt whiskies that I may or may not ever get to try again (there are so many and not readily available in the US!) and the two bartenders, Olivia and Darren, were friendly to talk to. For the record, I tried these 3 and loved them all: - Bunnahabhain Islay 12 year old single malt - Glenkinchie Lowland 12 year old single malt - Bowmore Islay 12 year old single malt My travel pal had a Tennents lager, a Cragganmore Speyside 12 year old single malt, and finally an Ardbeg Islay Wee Beastie 5 year old single malt. There's of course scrambled eggs, ham, sausages and haggis which is pretty good. Then there's various jams, some cheese, sausages, Nutella and so on. There are various fruit and vegetables as well. You can even make your own salad in the morning. Cereals are pleantyfull. There are also waffles, muffins, croissants and breads. The beds are pretty firm. I personally would've liked some softer beds. The water pressure in the shower is pretty much non existent. The cleanliness was fine but could of course be improved in some areas. Overall I would really recommend this hotel.

The accommodations were ideal, service was superb and setting was magical. The grounds of the estate were perfectly manicured and the Scottish Garden was breathtaking. A walk around the house and grounds was like taking a step back in time. We all loved the morning cook to order breakfast, chef prepared dinners and the very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Andrea and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome as they took care of every little thing and detail. Sad to say that I am not sure if I will ever come back to Hillhouse, but I feel very fortunate that I was able to stay there and experience such a special place with my friends.
