On a day trip to Strasbourg, my gluten-free partner did some research as to his food options and was thrilled to come across Mama Bubbele and try the Alsacian tarte flambée. We made a reservation, thankfully, because we saw the hosts unfortunately having to turn folks away who didn't have one. Even at open, there was already a line out the door. We tried the champignon and the Munster miel tartes and both were incredible. I am such a sucker for mushrooms, but I think I enjoyed the other one slightly more; the combo of cheese and honey is just unbeatable. Sharing two tartes and then having one for dessert (the banana, chocolate, and hazelnut), we were absolutely stuffed to the brim by the time we finished our meal. My partner had an Alsacian gin and tonic to drink and loved it. I tried it and actually liked it quite a bit too, and I normally hate gin. I had a glass of the Alsacian Riesling and found it quite nice! Very different from any of the Rieslings I've had in the states. Definitely recommend stopping by Mama Bubbele if you're looking for a tasty meal!

When I found myself in Strasbourg somewhat unexpectedly, I asked a travel group I'm in for ideas on what to do; one suggestion was: eat as much flammkuchen and drink as much wine as possible. Challenge accepted. So when I Googled "best flammkuchen" (or flambee in French--I'm just better at German), Mama Bubbele came up and I headed across the river for lunch. I was most excited to see an offering with goat cheese (my weakness!) and a seat outside in the sun. The flammkuchen was delicious (don't know if I could quite call it best, but I have a lot more to taste), the wine a little bit too sweet (I recognize that's my fault), and service was fine (typical European). My favorite part was just sitting outside, though the bees also really liked my seat, too. :(

Classic flambée with garlic, sour cream, bacon. Sounded weird but trust me.

Visiting for a night, Strasbourg has been on my list of places to visit for a while. They are known for their tartę flambée. Since I am gluten free I thought I would have to pass on this tradition but, but after a little googling Mama Bubbele popped and we gave it a go. We ordered 3 different flambée's: their house special, the waiters recommendation and the classic. They were delicious! We ordered a delicious reasonably priced bottle of wine and had a night. We chose to sit outside, the outdoor seating was right on the river overlooking the beauty of Strasbourg.

    Champignon Tarte Flambé

Tonight we tried the champignon tarte flambé. The super crispy crust is paper thin and the toppings are all fresh and very flavorful. The place was lively, we sat inside because it was cold on the plaza. Reservations would have been better, but we were seated promptly even without them. Service was quick and helpful. Definitely recommend.

We arrived a bit early on Saturday evening and found it was still closed. We returned after 6:30 PM and found it was open. There are only about 8 tables in the restaurant. It seems to be run by a couple. The man/husband works in the kitchen, and the woman/wife works in the dining area. We are asked if we had a reservation when we arrived. We did not, but we were seated immediately. There was a board with the daily recommendations. The restaurant specializes in Alsacean fare. We began our meal with an apertif: one glass muscat and one glass cremant natural. For our dinners, we selected items from the daily board. We choose a salad that was prepared with grilled sausage and a 2nd meal which was oxtail salad (oxtail served cold with tomato, pickle, and egg). The oxtail also came with roasted potatoes that were prepared fresh. With the dinner, we shared a pitcher of Alsacean pinot noir. For dessert, we had the tarte prepared with local mirabelles, almonds, and a scoop of ice cream. The dessert was almost ruined though as one of the other diners in the restaurant had ordered a cheese dish and the smell of the cheese was overpowering for a short while. I have only nice things to say about the restaurant. The only negative I can point out is that the restaurant is small and when it filled with patrons, it was quite warm. I would love to come back here again when it is cold and enjoy the warmth of this place and the generous hospitality of it's owners. Also, given how small the place is, a reservation does seem like a good idea.

Jeff de Bruges is a renowned French chocolatier with a series of shoppes throughout France. The cocoa is sourced sustainably and social responsible from their plantains in Ecuador. The clerks were friendly and let him taste a chocolate before he bought the box. The chocolates taste amazing with intense chocolate flavor. The filled chocolates are delicate and beautiful. The solid chocolate is delicious, especially the dark chocolate. I wholeheartedly recommend Jeff de Bruges chocolate.

We selected a nice marzipan-filled milk chocolate log kind of thing & purchased a decorative box to bring back for family The marzipan log was okay - the almond flavor was very subtle & I am thinking the dark chocolate would have been a better pairing.....and they had that on offer so I'll put it to the test next time The decorative box never made it to the family - I just couldn't resist the cute houses, doggies and foiled chocolates in both dark and milk varieties. They were absolutely scrumptious & the milk chocolates in particular just melted in our mouths If seeking some nice Belgian chocolates to bring back as a gift ( or to indulge yourself ) you'll find a treat at Jeff de Bruges
