We tried to have breakfast there this morning. It was a remarkably dumb experience. Our total order (for four people) comprised two English muffins (one with peanut butter), one order of wheat toast, and one milk shake. The untrained, dim-witted server took the English muffin order from one of us, then disappeared. When she brought the toasted muffin she took the second person's order, for the milk shake. After she brought the milk shake she took the remaining orders (second muffin, and whole wheat toast). They have two toasters.
She was unwilling to write anything down, so we needed to keep correcting her ("no, WHEAT toast" and "now can I have peanut butter please?"). They can apparently do hamburgers, but not eggs. Perhaps the burgers are patties heated in a microwave oven.
The handling of the peanut butter probably violated the health ordinances for Iowa restaurants: the big jar was delivered to our table (help yourself, but try not to sneeze!), no doubt to be used to make pb&j sandwiches for other people.
Small towns are supposed to be peopled with smart folks who can figure stuff out. Not so this morning in Grundy Center, Iowa. read more
