After I asked for a quote for 2 front tyres and perhaps the tracking to be looked at. He needed to look at my car and when I told him the make of the car and we're it was he said "the only D'S in the car park. Then asked me how much was the other quotes I had. I asked him to write his quote down and my tyre size. And he said so u can tell your other quotes the tyre size. I told him not to if it was a problem. Another customer waiting was even shaking his head. Basically I wouldn't give him my buisness what ever his prices are. They need someone with some people skills on reception. On the plus side I'm sure there tyres are fine.

Scumbag sales technique, upping the price after already verbally agreeing it with us! My girlfriend…read moreand I drove a couple of hours to view some cars and came to this dealer. My girlfriend liked the car and wanted to buy it, so we attempted to negotiate on price. The first guy we spoke to went away to see if the price offered would be accepted, but in the interim, another sales person told us that there was no room on the price as it was already low enough. Was wishing we didn't have to deal with this guy at this point, who seemed hung over, but fair enough, they don't have to discount the car. Then started 1 and a half hours of complete farce. My girlfriend said she would pay the full price on credit card if we could drive away today and that was agreed. Since getting back from the test drive, paying by credit card was mentioned three times to this particular sales person and it was agreed that we would pay the asking price. Then, there was apparently a 'mysterious' issue with being able to tax the car via the Internet and it looked like we couldn't have the car on that day after all. Except, there was nothing wrong with the automated phone system and when my girlfriend got the guy to try again, despite the guy not knowing what numbers to enter on the website to register for tax, he eventually managed to get there. At this point, my girlfriend was asked to pay for tax, which she paid for. My girlfriend was then asked to pay for the vehicle, but as the sales person was setting up the payment on the card reader, he suddenly dropped the bombshell that there was a credit card surcharge which upped the price by hundreds of pounds! So my girlfriend had already paid for the tax and wouldn't be sold the car without paying the surcharge. After realising his mistake of not telling us anything about the surcharge in the preceding hour of misery, the salesman went away and then came back saying that he'd drop the surcharge slightly, but we'd still have to pay most of it if we wanted the car. This is after the price for paying by credit card had already been verbally accepted and road tax already paid for! I doubt how the garage handled that situation was legal and I'm considering reporting the matter to Trading Standards. Anyone with an ounce of honour would have respected the agreed price. The result of all this was, despite my girlfriend having just purchased a car which she liked, she felt so miserable having been through an hour and a half sales process which was just horrible and had obstacle after obstacle put in our way of buying the car. I've bought cars before from dealerships and I've always come away happy, feeling like I've got a good deal - not something you'll feel like after buying from these scumbags.

It's not often you encounter a business whose entire way of doing things is governed by…read moreword-of-mouth. Lidderdale Garage is that rare kind of place. Nestled in an alleyway running alongside a railway wall means it gets almost no real thoroughfare. I also seriously doubt it has been advertised anywhere, ever. However, since it's been in business for over fifty years, it must be doing something right. The original owner was a white-haired old chap called Tommy Hill who is mentioned in the memoirs of Stan Williams, a Dovedale Road schoolmate of John Lennon. Following Hill's death, the business became run by his son. It is a dark, old-fashioned kind of grease-shack that tunes up cars for a low fee. Independent businesses such as this bring together neighbourhoods. It may not have the vast customer lists of a big chain garage, but here's hoping it lasts another fifty years.

Gary at Lidderdale Garage is one of Wavertrees hidden gems. At least I think its a gem, the way the…read moresun bounces off that odd shaped head of his. His garage is equipped with all up to date, state of the art equipment, namely, a hammer, a crowbar, and even a set of no expense spared Aldi spanners. He is the most trustworthy mechanic I have ever known, always returning the nuts and bolts that are left over from every job, as he can't remember where they go, but wouldn't steal them from you. If you can find a real mechanic to tell you where they go, Gary is always happy to fit them for free. He has at least 10 Haynes manuals in his office, namely to cover up the stack of razzles and other jazz mags he keeps there, but that feat fades into oblivion, when he inevitably shares with you the fact that he has a library of 26 books at home. Yes, 26. Hes OK for those once a year visits, but if you go any more than that, he tries to befriend you by reciting poetry by Jim Morrison and John Donnnnnnn, even though it sticks out like a sore thumb the fact that he hasn't got a fucking clue what he's rambling on about. He only stops to regale you with tales of how he 'made it' and played guitar to a quarter of the worlds population in 1934. Regular customers have been known to take a 2 minute timer with them, as its the only chance you've got of making him stop. His dexterity inside an engine bay bears such magnificence, that it can only be born of a superhuman with an extra digit on each hand.
