It is part of the Sonae group, owned by Belmiro de Azevedo, which also owns a lot of other companies in Portugal, such as Optimus (the equivalent of Orange in the Uk). This is just a copy of every other Modelo in the country. The only good thing is that this seems cheaper than the rest and it has its own brand, which makes it even cheaper. The food is of quality and the workers are friendly. This is no Lidl, it is moderately cheap, it has quality and it is a good choice and source of knowledge to the foreign tourist. Remember if you see a Modelo go in, don't be afraid, it is cheaper than many other supermarkets.

There's a huge war going on in Lisbon. No bloodshed as far as I can tell, but people get very…read morepassionate about who makes the best pastéis de nata, those little custard tarts with the charred tops that can turn into a sweet addiction. While there are plenty of bakeries who make them, the competition comes down to two heavy hitters. One is the historic birthplace using a secret 1837 recipe developed by Catholic monks at the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. You can only get them at Pastéis de Belém where you inevitably wait in a long queue, but the wait was worth it (review: https://yelp.to/YOXIN0YRNI). This is the other one - a bakery chain that just opened in 2014 and has quickly expanded to 20 locations. It was across the street from the viewpoint at Miradouro das Portas do Sol where Jamie W and I found ourselves on our first evening in Lisbon. I didn't expect to try one so early on our trip but what the hell. The moment we walked in, we could see a multitude of freshly baked, aromatic pasteis on a tray ready to be devoured. There was no wait here, so we bought two 3€ sets of two pasteis which were packaged in a folded, customized container (Photo 9). Two 1€ Espressos were critical to our order because we knew they'd make the perfect accompaniment (Photo 10). We took them out to a concrete bench with a view of the passing Tram 28 cars. So how do they compare, you ask? Well, we had these pasteis just two days before the Belem ones, and both left strong impressions. The crust was flakier and lighter than the crunchier ones in Belem. I prefer more substance since they're handheld pastries, so that's one point for Belem. There's a stronger eggy taste to the custard filling at Belem, but both were really flavorful. I call it a tie on the flavor. Frankly I wouldn't turn down either one. It was the end of the day, and the shop was completely empty except for three personnel who were cleaning the shop. I actually asked if they were still open, and they said they still were. The day's remnants had a couple of different choices left in the display cases for us to pick from. I pointed to the pastel de nata, because my bf had never had them before, and I really wanted him to try one. We got two to go and then opened up the bag to eat them on the walk home. OMG. These were AWESOME!!! Flaky crust, creamy, sweet egg tart filling... these were SO yummy!! Who would have thought that something so inconspicuous could be so awesome? I'm so glad that we stopped in to get the pastel de nata. Totally worth it and absolutely delicious.
