Despite making reservations for highly rated restaurants, when we got to the Spanish steps this little unassuming cafe on the outside caught my eye. I wandered in not knowing what to expect but the store immediately spiked my enthusiasm. I ended up asking to stay in for either afternoon tea or just a drink. We were seated right away, classic to most European dining it is fairly close quarters. But the ambiance is very charming like an English garden. Lots of deep greens and botanical theming. The idea of a tea infused iced cocktail sounded wonderful during the summer heat. Also the key lime tart was right up my alley. The rose tea infused gin cocktail was extremely delicious. I never would have thought to combine iced tea with liquor but it worked incredibly well. The lime tart was not your usual key lime pie, it was more robust and more akin to a lemon bar with whipped cream. The little selection of snacks was very nice. I ended up buying Tea with Miss B - afternoon tea recipe book on the way out along with some canned rose tea leaves! The server was very efficient and also closed out our bill. What a lasting memory, if you are naturally going to be visiting the famous Spanish Steps make sure to also stop in for a delightful experience of refreshments here! You won't regret it.

Their breakfast selection is incredible -- a wide variety of fresh, beautifully crafted pastries that taste just as good as they look. The cappuccinos are perfectly made, rich and balanced, exactly what you'd expect in Italy. What makes this place even more special is that it's not just for mornings. In the afternoon, it transforms into the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxed aperitivo in a lovely, cozy setting. The service truly stands out -- the staff is incredibly friendly, attentive, and always smiling, which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. I was disappointed with the bread and cookies we purchased. It's difficult to do everything well. Perhaps narrowing on one specialty is best, but I'm old school. I miss the days of the fruit store, the formaggi shop, the wine merchant, etc. Everyone was lovely at Il Gianfornaio, and reminded me of how my American education was lacking. I can only speak English and a smattering of French. The merchants at Il Gianfornaio spoke English better than me. That was embarrassing.

We had no idea what was on the way, or what would be open, so we kind of just kept an eye open and checked menus as we walked. We were seated right away on the outdoor patio, our waitress came out to greet us and took our drink orders before giving us time to review the menu. We started with the Trio of Bruschetta (€10). For my main, I can't remember what it was called, but it was a spaghetti-like noodle smothered - swimming - in a buttery, anchovy-y sauce. My husband ordered the ravioli (€15). The food was excellent, exactly what we were hoping for on that hot summer afternoon. The bruschetta trio was a great starter. Our version had one tomato and basil, one mortadella and pistachio and one salmon with avocado. The toasts were crispy, the toppings different and tasty. I liked my pasta dish - I did. But it was just a lot of butter. By the time I was a few forkfuls in, I knew without a doubt I wouldn't be able to finish it. The flavor was really very good: savory and umami and saucy. But it was so SO buttery, my stomach started to tap not long after. My husband absolutely loved his rigatoni meal, making short work of his plate before taking a tentative bite of what was left on mine (he agreed on the flavor, and on the buttery-ness.) All in all a great lunchtime meal ahead of a long day of touring. Definitely would have gone back, had we had extra time.
