Il GIANFORNAIO is a large bakery, con caffe, con pizza, in the Prati neighborhood of Rome. A jack of all trades, Il Gianfornaio, does everything just okay. I was disappointed with the bread and cookies we purchased. It's difficult to do everything well. Perhaps narrowing on one specialty is best, but I'm old school. I miss the days of the fruit store, the formaggi shop, the wine merchant, etc. Everyone was lovely at Il Gianfornaio, and reminded me of how my American education was lacking. I can only speak English and a smattering of French. The merchants at Il Gianfornaio spoke English better than me. That was embarrassing. read more

This was one of my favorite places to eat at when in Rome. Not only did they have breakfast items like pastries and coffee, they also serve a great lunch. For those who are lactose intolerant or allergic to gluten, this is a great place to eat something healthy or take a break from the rich pastas and pizzas when in Rome. When you get inside, you'll notice it looks like any other bakery. However, this one's very special and I'm so glad my family and I found this place as we were walking around the beautiful city. We ordered many different things, mainly just different flavors of the mini pizzas they sold there. I definitely suggest getting one of the mini pizzas because they're delicious for a great price! We got the regular cheese-covered ones, ones with zucchini, mushrooms, and tomatoes. They were so flavorful and they all tasted warm and fresh! I'll be back here if I ever visit Rome again! read more

We took our kids here two days in a row we loved it so much! Pizza is to die for... Love that you tell them how much you want and that's all you pay for. Stack up your plate with all different baked foods. Chili pizza will blow your brains out, mushroom was excellent, margherita was out this world. And don't forget the little oil & salt rolls. My wife would normally kill me for saying it, but given it was Rome it must be known that they've hand selected the cutest waitresses in town. My brother in law would've been in heaven. read more

I'm so glad that this place was walking distance from our hotel because it was like heaven. Upon walking in you see all the breakfast pastries, desserts, breads, pizza's, delicious candies and sweets that your head is going crazy because you don't know what to pick!!! I literally wanted to try EVERYTHING! Tried the croissants which were yummy and the focaccia pizza breads were so good as well. They even toast it for you if you'd like. If you want an Italian cafeteria experience must try this place. Simply point to items you would like - as they are displayed in large platters behind a counter . Once the plate is filled the counter person will give you a ticket detailing what you have on the plate - take the ticket to a cash register nearby and pay. We were staying at a nearby B&B, and our host recommended this restaurant. We are so glad we took their advice! We loved the pizza so much the first time we ate here, we ended up coming back three more times during our one-week stay! The pizza is bakery-style thin crust and you can't go wrong with anything that's available! We especially loved the pizza that had black olives and cherry tomatoes. The pizza you order is weighed by the kilogram, and we never ate for more than 10 euros total each time we came. We will be sure to recommend Il Gianfornaio to our friends and family when they visit Rome! read more

This bakery was very close to our hotel. I spotted it on my first day in Rome and knew I HAD to try it. We stopped in twice during our two week long honeymoon. We tried various pastries and all of them were delicious, I especially liked the tiramisu and nutella macaroon. I wish we had a place like this in my hometown. I would have gave more stars, but I was treated poorly by several staff members when they realized I was American. Only one person consistently treated us respectfully and very nicely, that was much appreciated. Questa panetteria è stato molto vicino al nostro hotel.
