Restaurant L'abidjanaise - Roasted fish (Tilapia?)

Located in Cote-des-Neiges, Restaurant L'Abidjanaise doesn't look like much when you first walk in…read morebut the service and food makes up for it right away! My cousin was visiting Montreal for a couple of days and wanted to find a West African restaurant after living in Ghana last year. He called in advance to organize our order. The lady (presumably also the owner and chef) was exceedingly welcoming and really made us feel at home. We ate: 1. Roasted fish - My aunt guessed that it was tilapia. It was topped with onions, tomatoes, cucumber and carrots. The fish was really flavourful and the veggies brightened up the dish a lot. 2. Roasted chicken - I think the seasoning was similar and the veggies were certainly the same. It was served with fried plantains on the side... delicious. 3. Attieke - Grated cassava, sort of like rice. It was a nice consistency and served with hot peppers as a condiment 4. Salted tuna - Served on more attieke. We thought it was a bit try and too salty. 5. Bissap - Hibiscus drink was really refreshing and not too sweet. It was perfect at the beginning because it was warm in the restaurant when we first arrived. 6. Degue - Millet porridge. It tasted like creamy, tangy yogurt with millet grains. It was quite sweet but a nice ending to the meal. The homestyle service is here really where the four stars are going. The food is certainly good but it's tough to compare with limited West African cuisine options in Montreal. Give it a shot and see for yourself!

Fantastic Eastern European supermarket! Saw lots of specialty items from Russia, Ukraine, Poland…read moreand the rest of Eastern Europe. You're going to hear a lot of Slavic languages here and see lots of Cyrillic languages on some of the labels. They have whole aisles just for pickles and pickled foodstuffs, another aisle to jams and fruit preserves, a wonderful frozen foods area where you'll find frozen pierogies of various kinds of Russian pelmeni, Georgian khinkali, and Ukrainian vareniki including dessert versions like cherry vareniki (dumplings). You'll find fresh organic butter and yogurts and the meat and cold cuts counter is damn good too. Garlic sausages, lamb cutlets, cheeses, I don't know any of their names but just ask the person behind the counter and she'll either explain items to you or even give you a small sample to try right there. Their liverwurst is great. You'll find all the European brand chocolates like Milka and Rittensoort, Polish Wawel poppyseed cakes and babkas and tons of other stuff. There's also a prepared foods counter which had some good stuff. I took home a large container of real home-made borscht that even had huge chuncks of beef in it and it was perfect for a dinner on a cold evening. You need a good hour here to just look over stuff and see what they have.

Not fresh. Check expiration dates and don't buy anything from buffet or the cakes…read more Packaged foods are ok. Lots of selection.
