Plus I also get a kick out of finding as many cool items in Montréal (which somehow seem to look and sound classier than the same shiit I can get back home). Covering lots of square footage, EcoDépôt is what it sounds like located in an industrial area off the highway. The first two things I noticed walking in was their Piano and Bill Withers playing. And by the way, the rest of their 60's R&B playlist was cool to hear in these parts. If it's chairs you're looking for- they have variety. Leather chairs? Several. Lamps? Many- plus so much other things. Actually one of the things hubs noticed is how clean items are and don't have years of dust on them! I'm still adding finishing touches to my vanity room and was hoping I'd find a specific stud chair here- but left empty-handed. But I did find a royal blue, metal utility box for CAN$39-which I'll repurpose for some of my items. Service was super nice from Ilene(?). I made the purchase alright, but I also wanted to close on a sweet deal- and EcoDepot didn't bulge. So just remember...there's no haggling here. Although I didn't find that perfect 'je ne sais quoi' piece that I had to have- I came out with something else.

Chances are none of your friends will find the same Rococo-style lamp base that you might find here. I collect vintage enameled cast-iron cookware like Copco, Le Creuset, Desco and I found a few pieces here in excellent condition and at a much cheaper price than I've seen elsewhere for the same thing. I think if you have a certain eye for design and aesthetics, you can easily find some stuff here, from kitchen table sets, to old toasters from the 1940's that with a little elbow-grease and watching how-to videos on Youtube, you can easily bring back to their former glory.

Despite Collectioneur's tight-ass layout, by no means is this all there is when it comes to purchasing antiques and vintage- but this place is strangely pretty damn great. This Meubles Grand Berger flea market certainly has vintage and retro, with furniture, clothes,…read morehousewares, assorted media, etc. It's run by the Mission du Grand Berger (a.k.a., Mission of the Great Shepherd) that has a food bank and provides meals to people. You'll notice a little musty smell when you enter Meubles Grand Berger's stairs up to the first Lower Level. Don't hesitate to make it to the Upper Level next floor up because there are certainly more varied finds. Used furniture on the whole in Montreal is less expensive than comparable items in New York City, so I've been always impressed by what I've seen. Despite named "Meubles" the organized top floor in particular covers a lot of the non-furniture items. This flea market also groups together Québec related stuff, if that's of interest. It's easy to reach by Montreal's Metro. If flea markets are your thing, Meubles Grand Berger is worth checking out!

Local 23 recently moved to a new location a couple of blocks from the original, and while I will…read morealways mourn the never-ending charm of the Bernard spot, what with the fitting rooms made from a bathroom and a coat closet, the ceiling falling down and the floor coming up.... it was clearly necessary! The new space on Boulevard Saint-Laurent is gorgeous, and much easier to shop (as in no squatting down to look at racks) and has much more room in general. They've kept a few small elements of the old place (hilarious vintage decor) which I'm very happy about, because honestly, it was the second best part of the store! The quality of the vintage stock seems to have improved, in that the less interesting flimsy modern pieces are pretty much gone. Not much else has changed other than the name/branding ( Local x annex) -- they still do their 30% and 50% markdowns, and the pricing seems about the same. The decor is warm and inviting, and recreates the effect of nosing around in your grandmother's dressing room/closet. The staff is friendly, helpful, and non-intrusive. Last year, I purchased a beautiful pair of leather ankle boots (unworn) for $80 - later on, I saw the same boots for sale downtown for around $400. This shop may be out-of-the-way for most, but it's definitely worth a visit!

Here is what happened: They claim to have 50% off. I found an item I liked and I was interested to purchase it. On the price tag I found a strange symbol where the price was supposed to be indicated. I asked what's the price and the salesperson said its 150$. Since its 50% off storewide I asked if that means that the price is 75$. She said "no, there is no discount for this item". When she noticed my hesitation she said she could do 100$. However, the situation was looking suspicious at that point so I left. 3 days later I decided to stop by again. This time the owner was there. She ignored me as I entered so I proceed to check out again the item of my interest. When I tried it on she approached me. I decided to ask her about the price assuming that salesgirl could make a mistake, owner always know better about items in the store. This time the lady said that the price is 175$. She also said she could do some discount if we pay cash. I said I could pay cash in American dollars and she named the price: " That will be 150$ American dollars". I said that it is even more expensive than the price she named first in Canadian dollars. She pretended she didn't know the correlation of currency. This store has the best prices on industrial furniture in Montreal. If you are looking for an industrial hint in your decor, this is a very affordable option. There is also Style Labo on St. Laurent, which has wonderful pieces as well, but their prices tend to be 2-3 times as much as Retro Vie. The lady who owns the store, Vanessa, is very kind and helpful. She can deliver as well, for very very reasonable rates. This shop also does restorations and reupholstery of old furniture on site. I don't think they offer this service to the public, but this means that they're always bringing in great new pieces, both very antique and restored as well. Her selection is pretty wide. A lot of her wares are authentic industrial pieces from old factories (very neat), but she also has great art deco pieces as well as shabby chic pieces. She also has some very neat knick-knacks here and there.. last time I was there, she had an old insurance salesman's notebook, it was about 80 years old. Even cute industrial staplers. You get the idea. Mind you I didn't just stop in here once or twice and happen to get all this cool stuff. I walk by this place practically everyday on my way to the metro so I usually get in a chance to duck in and have a quick look around. That and having a trained eye towards quality goods will eventually land you something if you're persistent enough. I really dislike the disposable, throw-away aspect of our culture and there really is truth that one person's junk can be another person's treasure. Plus Fripe-Prix Renaissance's mission is about helping persons who are usually disadvantaged get some skills and build up the confidence to stand on their own. Shopping here is just a win-win situation for everybody.

I ordered masks online from Citizen Vintage last Sunday and chose pick-up expecting the masks to be…read moreready in a few days, or at least not on the following day which was a National Holiday. The next morning, I received a text message. The masks were indeed ready the very next day, on Victoria Day. Furthermore, they even included a hand-written Thank You note to express their appreciation of supporting their small business during these hard times. Oh and to add to it all, the designs of these masks are cool, the masks are quite affordable ($15) and they're made of quality fabric. I also found a cute pink sweatshirt to match (because, everyone knows I'm all about the hoodies/sweatshirts), so I purchased that as well. I was slightly annoyed, as the same canvas bag was found in another store a few blocks away that was $5 less T___T The female employee was super friendly and helpful, and you are more than welcome to have your items be put on hold while you shop some more.
