My cousin was very excited about us going here as a group so we obliged. While this place has a 4.8…read moreon Google, the 3 on Yelp makes more sense. It's like a want to be New York deli vibe. Very limited menu and kinda high prices for solid but not amazing food. We had fries, chopped liver and some special between the two of us. It was $75. The chopped liver was alright, quite a few pearl onions that are not shopped up which I thought was odd. The fries reminded me of McDonald's, pretty good with a big portion. The meat plate special (can't recall the name) was tasty. A 6oz steak with a thin sausage and then 3 meat patties served with a small potato kinish and pickled tomatoes. Enjoyed the meats, but not so much the tomatoes. The sauce it came with was good for dipping the fries. Overall this falls between a 3 and 4 for me. The free pickles were delicious, the service a little slow. I'll error on the side of caution due to the price.

Yesterday was one of those rainy Mondays, the kind that makes driving from place to place for work…read morefeel even heavier. It was also one of those days when I was missing my mom deeply. She passed away this summer, and rainy days like that used to be the ones where she'd call me in the middle of the day to say, "I made matzo ball soup for you, come pick it up on your way home." While driving, I thought maybe I'd stop somewhere for soup. Not just because I wanted something warm, but because I was craving that comforting feeling of being cared for, something that reminded me of her. I went Yan's Deli, and although the door was unlocked and I walked in, they were actually closed. Benji greeted me kindly and apologized, saying they were closed. I told him I had really been hoping for some soup. He paused, looked at me, and said, "I could probably do that for takeout if that's OK." So on a day when it was pouring rain, and the restaurant was closed, this man stopped what he was doing, went into the kitchen, and made me soup. While I waited, I held back tears because his kindness and generosity were exactly what I needed in that moment. It felt like a small act of love from a stranger, and somehow, a little piece of my mom's warmth shining through. When he handed me the bag and said, "It really is soup weather," I smiled and thanked him. Sitting in my car, eating what was probably the best soup I've had in a long time, I cried missing my mom, but so grateful for the compassion of someone who didn't even know me. It might sound cliché to say that this place and this soup will hold a special place in my heart, but they truly will. Thank you, Benji, for reminding me that kindness still exists in the simplest moments. I can't wait to come back.

Restaurant L'abidjanaise - Roasted fish (Tilapia?)

My cousin was visiting Montreal for a couple of days and wanted to find a West African restaurant after living in Ghana last year. He called in advance to organize our order. The lady (presumably also the owner and chef) was exceedingly welcoming and really made us feel at home. We ate: 1. Roasted fish - My aunt guessed that it was tilapia. It was topped with onions, tomatoes, cucumber and carrots. The fish was really flavourful and the veggies brightened up the dish a lot. 2. Roasted chicken - I think the seasoning was similar and the veggies were certainly the same. It was served with fried plantains on the side... delicious. 3. Attieke - Grated cassava, sort of like rice. It was a nice consistency and served with hot peppers as a condiment 4. Salted tuna - Served on more attieke. We thought it was a bit try and too salty. 5. Bissap - Hibiscus drink was really refreshing and not too sweet. It was perfect at the beginning because it was warm in the restaurant when we first arrived. 6. Degue - Millet porridge. It tasted like creamy, tangy yogurt with millet grains. It was quite sweet but a nice ending to the meal. The homestyle service is here really where the four stars are going. The food is certainly good but it's tough to compare with limited West African cuisine options in Montreal. Give it a shot and see for yourself!

Fantastic Eastern European supermarket! Saw lots of specialty items from Russia, Ukraine, Poland…read moreand the rest of Eastern Europe. You're going to hear a lot of Slavic languages here and see lots of Cyrillic languages on some of the labels. They have whole aisles just for pickles and pickled foodstuffs, another aisle to jams and fruit preserves, a wonderful frozen foods area where you'll find frozen pierogies of various kinds of Russian pelmeni, Georgian khinkali, and Ukrainian vareniki including dessert versions like cherry vareniki (dumplings). You'll find fresh organic butter and yogurts and the meat and cold cuts counter is damn good too. Garlic sausages, lamb cutlets, cheeses, I don't know any of their names but just ask the person behind the counter and she'll either explain items to you or even give you a small sample to try right there. Their liverwurst is great. You'll find all the European brand chocolates like Milka and Rittensoort, Polish Wawel poppyseed cakes and babkas and tons of other stuff. There's also a prepared foods counter which had some good stuff. I took home a large container of real home-made borscht that even had huge chuncks of beef in it and it was perfect for a dinner on a cold evening. You need a good hour here to just look over stuff and see what they have.
