The Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association runs an indoor flea market every Sunday from 7 a.m…read more to 3 p.m. I have participated in this flea market as both a shopper and a vendor, and I am happy to share my thoughts as both. As a shopper, i was shocked at the size of it. When I first arrived and looked around, there had to be 50+ vendors around this gymnasium.. Just when I thought I saw it all, I found out there were three large rooms with MORE vendors. So if you go, keep wandering. There is definately more than simply that one big area. This is definately more of a flea market with plenty of bric a brac, as opposed to an artizan market such as the Calgary Farmer's Market, so be prepared for an indoor garage sale-type scenario. I got some fantastic deals on CDs and second hand books, so I was quite a happy little shopper. I also bought a pair of gorgeous earrings for $2. Seriously! There was one kiosk in there that made falafels that was delicous. :) I don't know if this lady is there every week, but she was worth every penny. As a vendor, the price was definately right. A table is $25. However, admittedly it is tough to get space there, since it is so busy. I was lucky enough to secure two tables for $50, so I actually had some room to display some clothing I was selling to raise money for the Giver for Liver Marathon. www.giverforliver.ca. Since the crowd was such bargain hunters, I didn't have much choice but to price my wares accordingly, therefore, making it difficult to do exceedingly well profit-wise. I know for certain there are many vendors that do very well there, but for me, with second hand clothing, it was a challenge. An item I would sell on kijiji for $10, I had to sell for $5, and more often than not, I would get haggled to $2. The vendor across from me dropped his prices all day and gave away all of his product for free in the last hour, which made it extremely hard for me to compete with free. I did exhibit in January where customer traffic was slower, so I may give this another kick at the can in the spring and update my review. However, my experience with the post-Christmas traffic was not a lot of profit for a nine hour day. I tried for two weekends. The first weekend, I didn't make my table (sold $40 worth of items, and the two tables were $50). The second week, I walked away with $55, so I had a much better sales day, but when I divide $55 by 9 hours, the charity only made $6.11 per hour. Much less than minimum wage. However, I spoke to many vendors around me, and many of them have been exhibiting there for years and have been profitable, selling antiquey-type housewares or books. So, it may simply be my product line (which was second hand clothing) or possibly my display, or other factors directly related to me. However, dealing with the community center was an absolute pleasure. Bonnie was extremely helpful and all the vendors I interacted with were a pleasure to deal with.

Parking is ample, and during the evenings and weekends, is free if you have to to park on the street.

When I got there, I was a little bit confused by the architecture of the building and wasn't sure where I was supposed to go in. Finally, I made my way inside to what I believe to be the main floor. There wasn't a ton of space in here, but more than enough room to highlight some great vendors. I browsed some jams, rad terrariums, artwork, etc. I made my way upstairs, but again, the size of the building didn't allow for much capacity and I ended up feeling too close to strangers and left. Even though I once lived in Bridgeland, this is the first time I have visited this centre. These days, it seems that most hoops are either privately owned by apartment complex or located on school grounds. The school hoops are all well and good during the summer and after school, but you don't wanna be creeping around there during the day. So, what to do? Well, if you're in the southwest, you can head to the Richmond Community Association which is located just beyond the Crowchild overpass on 26th Ave SW. They've got four basketball hoops (2 even have mesh - a true rarity these days!) inside a hockey rink on the grounds. The rink surface is extremely well maintained and the fenced in enclosure ensures you won't spend half your time chasing down errant shots. It's a great, free daytime hoops destination.

The antipasti table was artfully arranged and laden with grissini, bruschetta and crostini, pickled eggplant, prosciutto wrapped melon, assorted cheese and fruit, cold cuts, olives, insalata caprese, sausage and meatballs, spanakopita, and egg rolls. Our starters, cannellonini and gnocchi in a tomato sauce, were pillowy light and not too chewy. The main course was unfortunately a hit and miss. The steak was seared beautifully but needed more seasoning. Although the chicken breast was very juicy, it tasted quite bland. A little bit more jus or gravy would have done it justice. Alas, the broccoli was overcooked and the carrots were still raw. The desserts however, were amazing--Mario's Gelati was served to the delight of the young and old guests. There was such a unique variety of flavours (chocolate hazelnut, cappuccino, and raspberry white chocolate swirl) accompanied with fresh fruit.

They invited my husband and I to join in a game of pick-up hockey. I had so much fun! They didn't even mind that I can barely skate & have only used a hockey stick once before tonight. It felt like good old fashioned fun to me. We all helped clear the snow on the ice before the rink was to be flooded at 9:30. Great community spirit. I can't wait to get more involved (and pay for our memberships)!

From what I can tell, the building is in good…read moreshape and I like that it has lots of windows on the main floor that open in order to enjoy fresh air and sunlight. The lower level restrooms are modern and clean (I didn't investigate the ones on the main floor). There is lots of parking and the neighborhood seems lovely, which also includes a kids park and an open, green field. I also noted the community garden on the property which adds a bit of a homey feel.

The Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre is a great way to spend an hour immersing yourself in history…read moreand tradition. We enjoyed ourselves looking at relics and items from the past. The museum is housed in the basement of the centre and is not very large but still had interesting information. I would definitely recommend a trip here when you visit Calgary. Admission is free and open to the public. There are other classes held throughout the centre, just look for the calendar or bulletin boards. There is also a pharmacy on the first floor that sells traditional Chinese medicine.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time exploring here - and their free museum downstairs is such a hidden…read moregem and a fantastic place to start when exploring Calgary's vibrant Chinatown! All the staff are helpful and very welcoming and the entrance is just beautiful- outside and inside! The plaza leading up to the entrance is lovely - lots of art and character. And when you enter, be sure to look up and appreciate the beautiful dome interior! There's so many intricate details. Also there are some small exhibits located around the halls on the upper floors before you go into the museum so don't miss those - very cool! The museum downstairs is the real star of the show - we were so impressed! They have lots of exhibits and interesting replicas. I really enjoyed the large replica exhibit of the terracotta soldiers - I had no idea how huge they actually are! And of the antique seismograph for measuring earthquake activity - that was really cool. They have a very detailed exhibit on the development of Calgary's Chinese community spanning over 100 years that was so fascinating. We had no idea about any of that history and are so glad we stopped in. They had lots of early artifacts and stories and many other interesting pieces, including a small wall of photographs of Calgary's Chinatown throughout its history - which was a fantastic way to start our morning exploring the area. Calgary has a surprisingly large Chinatown and if you're at all interested in Chinese culture, I highly recommend starting here and then be sure to explore the town itself. Lots to see! Oh and there's a decent bathroom up on the second floor too!
