I got falsely accused of shoplifting because of how I looked. Guy wasnt even near me that signed complaint, it was a woman. I refused to talk to anyone or turn out my pockets without a lawyer, police and proof on video tape. That was the only way they let me go. Cost me a whole day at police station, but now im suing their ass off. Do not shop here if you are a young woman. They are suspicious as hell, no training in shoplifting and will call cops thinking you stoke a $5 item. Who are these people???? read more

I go out of my way to visit Mardens when I am in Maine. I always find a bargain. This store was no exception. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because of the layout. Difficult to find sizes in clothes and shoes. Found a pair of shoes only because I looked on all the end racks. Some items that should have been grouped together where in different places. I understand separate areas for plus sizes but I found regular sized tops in four different areas. I don't mind searching for a bargain but this was a bit extreme. Personnel are alway so happy and helpful. read more

You need some steely resolve (and maybe some latex gloves) to shop here. BUT -- get over yourself long enough to do some diving through the store, and you can find some pretty amazing stuff. Occasionally if you look hard enough, you can find high-end shoes, designer label clothes, and salon-brand hair products. Not every trip to Marden's will yield diamonds instead of coal, but if you're the gamblin' type, it can sometimes pay off. The furniture section is something else, by the way. Ignore the appliances -- the refrigerators and shit are way overpriced for what they are here -- but the deals on furniture and home accessories cannot be beat. Man, I wish they delivered to California. Because we would have bought a whole new living room set complete with leather sectional last weekend for a fraction of even the most bargain-basement prices found out on the west coast. It smells funny in here....the floors are dirty....you might feel like you have fleas afterward....but Marden's has this strange pull that I cannot resist whenever I'm back home. read more

We came here on a Friday afternoon just to check things out. The parking lot was dirty and smelled horrible. You could probably find just about anything in this store. In my opinion, nothing of quality. However, there's a ton of toys for little ones. Surprisingly, I found several kitchenware and home decor, automotive and outdoor patio furniture. They also had a good assortment of foods available. I probably will never come back again. read more

I have never in my life felt so racially profiled. I bought a dog gate from this exact location, drove all the way back home, opened the box to find 1. The gate was broken (snapped in half) and 2. It was not the same gate as pictured. I figured sometimes at a junk store that's what the outcome is. But regardless it was of no use to me broken. So I went and bought a plastic gate from wal-mart and figured I'll return the broken gate next time I drive 45 minutes back to this location. Fast forward a week and here we are. I walked in with my receipt, the original packaging and the gate that came in THAT original packaging and waited in line at the service desk. As the elderly couple ahead of me made their return with no hassle, quarrels or rebuttals what-so-ever from the elderly cashier I read that they uphold a 30 day hassle free return policy. Yeah. Right. As I step forward I tell the elderly cashier that I would like to return the gate because again 1. It's broken and 2. To my surprise it was not the gate pictured on the box. She informed me that she had to check with a manager because it's not the gate on the box and she's unsure if she can process the return. As we wait for the manager I am continuously being referred as "this lady is trying to return this but it's not the gate pictured on the box, she has a receipt but it's not the gate on the box, yeah this lady. Oh well I'm not doing it." Okay you know I've worked in customer service before, she probably does not want to face the repercussions for it later, I get it. The manager shows up looks at the box "well that's not the gate that's on the box." Yes i understand that, again why i drove 45 minutes back to return it cause it is not what i paid for. He looks at me and asks if I got bought the gate from that store, from the pet section at that store and if I have a receipt. Gladly hand him the receipt and explained that when I bought it, it looked like it had already been opened cause it was taped shut. He proceeds to walk away as I'm mid sentence and goes to check the other stock in the pet aisle. Comes back and tells me "yeah I can't return this, I talked to the manager there's no way I can return it, it's not even the gate in the picture." Which is part of the reason I'm returning it! However the elderly couple ahead of me was able to do a return no questions asked and received cash back. Yet here I am with a receipt, original packaging and a broken gate. I'm still upset at the accusatory tone that both elderly cashier and assistant manager took with me during the whole interaction and I will be sure that next time I visit I open every box prior to paying and leaving the store. Was driving by and just had to stop to see if I could find some school supplies and anything else the store might have that I needed. As you know Marden's is a discounted surplus store and you really aren't all that sure what gem you might find. Today I found a limited offering of school supplies, something I am always in need for as I am an elementary school teacer. No luck on supplies today! I did however discover a large supply of scrubs at unbelievable prices that will suit my daughter. As I was about to leave it poured and I mean poured. It was one of those summer thunder storms that roll in it's dark clouds, deposits an inch of rain and then calmly exits a few minutes later. This storm was taking it's time. Perhaps I should go back and look for a rain parker or at the least some of those big old green Hefty trash bags. read more

When reading some of the negative reviews, I must shake my head. Marden's has never claimed to be a "high end store" although I have found may high end items. There was a comment about them profitting off some else's loss. I bought high end sheets, that normally would not be able to afford, when Texas was flooded. These items would have normally been thrown out. That's just good business. Best store ever!!!! read more

This is my favorite Marden's store. As a long time Marden's shopper I can tell you that this place, and the entire chain, is not as good as it used to be. That is I used to find amazing deals but the amazing deals are mostly gone and I occasionally find a pretty good deal. This location has a phenomenal fabric selection. You can leave having spent $100 and have an amazing haul of last season's and the season's before patterns. Name brands and awesome patterns. When you compare the amount purchased to a place like Walmart you easily have double the amount of fabric. When compared to Joanne's hell it's 3 or 4 times the amount. If you need bolts and tools, this is a good place to get cheapo made in china junk. Occasionally something better. Another location to look is shoes. They occasionally get in name brands and sell them at 50% MSRP. (In contrast to their old pricing which was a mystery but was always about 25% of the MSRP) I picked up a snazzy pair of Tretorn sneaker that list for about $65 and I snagged them for $32. Not bad at all. Occasionally you can still find $5 shoes if you look hard. The Marden's organizational "system" must always be mentioned in a review of Marden's. They have general areas where stuff is dropped. That is to say there are aisles for the sneakers, clothing, tools, etc. The shoes and fabric are pretty well organized, but the rest of the store really follows that pallet drop mentality. Drop it and unload it in that area. In some case the pallet is simply cut open and left to sit. read more

Each time I go to this Marden's, I find so many great deals that I have to leave some stuff behind. I love the electronic section. Those wires and accessories that runs pricey other places are so much cheaper. HDMI cord that was normally almost $20, I found for $7. Great shoe selection as well. Found 2 pair of Puma low top sneakers for $8 apiece. It's not easy finding inexpensive shoes in a size 12 men's. read more

There's a certain other "discount department store" in this state that calls itself a "Maine adventure," but if we are really being honest, there are bigger adventures to be had at a Marden's. The nature of the surplus/salvage model means that offerings at each store are different, and the inventory can be quite eclectic. This Brewer Marden's is one of the more balanced franchises. There always seems to be something that catches my eye in every department here. Housewares, clothes, fabric, books, electronics, shoes, you name it. And though you really have to want to pore over every shelf and rack when you shop at a Marden's, you have the added bonus of finding things you didn't even know you were looking for. For me, one of the biggest draws at Marden's has always been the fabric center. The prices are insanely low. They have whole clearance racks of bolts under $3 a yard, and I rarely see anything over $10. Even Wal-Mart is more expensive. Joann Fabrics? Forget about it. If you are a crafty Mainer who isn't shopping for at least some of your fabric and notions at Marden's you do not know what you are missing -- besides many unnecessarily spent dollars. read more

My advice to the uninitiated: best to enter a Marden's without expectations or preconceived notions. This is a place to people watch, rummage, bargain hunt, browse while you drink your weekend coffee or after breakfast at Dysart's. Did I mention people watching? Lack of merchandising and minimal service keeps prices down. Much of what has already been said about this Maine fixture is true. Yes, like items are dumped in piles or on shelves together, or are still in boxes on pallets. The fun is rummaging through everything to find a bargain! And you might not always find one. One doesn't *simply* go to Marden's once. Last week we happened upon a sleeper sofa in the furniture pit. We sat on it for a while, debating whether to buy it. We'd been looking for just the right thing for several weeks, that "I'll know it when I see it" phenomenon. Two different sales reps came by and asked how they could help us. We were pleasantly surprised! This scenario is what I call a Marden's Miracle. We bought it when we saw it, and couldn't be happier. read more

Big store, lots and lots of stuff and more stuff. Truthfully we like Ellsworth better, Brewer is bigger but not well organized. You need a lot of time to look, found some Hush Puppies for $5, Hanes T-shirts for $2. Never know what you will find, sometimes good deals on groceries like cereal or cashew nuts. We get there once or twice a year, cheaper flower pots and patio furniture if you hit it right. They had a better selection of yarn and craft supplies than Ellsworth but last time the clothing department was quite depleted. Not a place to go if you are in a hurry and you need to know your prices. Look in the back of the store by the back wall, sometimes they have good deals on greeting cards 4 for $1, I loved the US Keds sneakers for $1 and big tubes of name brand toothpaste for 89 cents.. read more

Yes they may purchase and resell things from fires etc. BUT consumers have the opportunity to purchase many wonderful things for a fraction of the price. I shop there every week. For some reason anyone who lives in Maine or visits Maine, decides to hang out at Marden's. There are so many things wrong with this place that it's almost impossible to write them down. Let me start by saying their mission statement is pretty crazy. If you check out the store's main website, they basically tell you that Marden's took advantage of people in bad situations and took their items for re-sale. One of the examples was a train wreck at the beginning of the last century and the decided to resell the stuff found in the wreckage. I don't know about you, but I personally don't like shopping in a store that takes advantage of bad situations. The rest of the reasons I will just list below in a bullet list format for optimal readability. *Marden's is swarming with tourists and rude locals who generally push and shove their way down the aisles. In one instance I had a rude lady yelling at me because she was holding up the line and ditched her stuff; I went ahead and stood in line thinking the person abandoned the things. It turns out the woman decided to continue shopping while using her shopping cart as a placeholder. That was the moment I walked out of the store with my mom because I cannot stand people treating me like trash. The other instance took place several days ago when a woman in the shoe aisle just started hitting our shopping cart with her butt and rammed it into my leg. My mom was really upset and told her to excuse us and we left. She started muttering rude remarks at my mom and I really lost it. We almost got into a fight with a customer. The employees don't really care and generally aren't there to be helpful. *The store displays stuff like it's trash. I mean they throw the books all over the place and want $15 for a hardcover. I just have to ask, if they think this little of their stuff, why should I pay more? One would think since it's surplus and salvage they are affordable, but they cost more than Home Depot. *Their returns are pretty sketchy to say the least. They don't really give you a receipt and the one they do give is filled with numbers. If you need the receipt for a tax deduction, think again! They supposedly accept returns, but how can they, if they don't know what's on their own receipt? *Their fabric aisles are laughable at best. I have had two instances where I asked questions and the salesperson just looked at me blankly and had no clue what I'm talking about. The fabrics range anywhere from $3-$10 per yard. I swear that Jo Ann's is cheaper and they are still beyond what I would consider affordable. *The crowning moment of glory is their pricing in appliances. They are selling refrigerators that are missing parts or have aesthetic problems for $1200. You can go to Lowe's and buy a brand new fridge for $500. Why on earth would anyone buy a fridge for that amount in "as is" condition? All in all, if you visit Maine once in your lifetime, skip this place and look at other places for local culture. If you like spending extra, getting abused by mountain folk and have cashiers glaring at you like you'r the Anti-Christ, go here! read more

Marden"s saved thousands of dollars for me!I fixed my house-hardwood floors,doors, rugs,fixtures,appliances ,furnished it ,decorated ,landscaped -I have several dozens of roses and other perennials,and even fruit trees-cherries ,apple trees,raspberries and so on for really nothing to compare with other stores and nobody thinks that all this stuff was from Marden"s.You will not find everything what you need in one visit,sometimes l leave the store not buying anything,sometimes-I leave $500 -1000 there.It depends.That's why parking lot at Marden's is always full. read more
