Some booths have a lot that you just need to stand back and look. I sometimes find it easier to just walk in with products in mind. But, it is also fun to take a look around with no real plan. I was in this antique mall for HOURS and didn't even realize it. The mall is well organized and all of the employees were friendly. We found something within in five minutes of entering the mall. Hours later we were still adding to our purchase pile. The antique mall is organized in rows. I was impressed with their customer service system. Each row has a call button. You hit the button when you need assistance (ex: a cabinet opened or a question) and someone will come directly to you. My wait was short each time that I hit the call button. Again, I was impressed because this place is huge. The amount of antique items was overwhelming interesting. I saw toys from my childhood, a large collection of Hallmark ornaments, paintings, books and a lamp that I immediately fell in love with (see pic). I HIGHLY recommend setting aside a few hours to visit this antique mall whenever you are in Williamsburg. You will not be disappointed.

With that in mind I figured I would finally make the big one block walk down to the gift shop to see what they've got shakin'. The scene would best be described as part hospital gift shop meets a Hallmark store for the 70 and over crowd. So many little trinkets and nick-knacks everywhere. Also noteworthy is that while the shop has an excellent mission, the prices here are very steep. Deals you will not find and some of the clothing that they're selling has never been seen in public since the Golden Girls was cancelled. Dorthy Zbornak would have had a field day in here. In the back of the building is a small chapel which is very respectfully laid out even if it was odd walking by tables of "discounted" Christmas things right by the entrance. I bought my obligatory Bruton Parish fridge magnet ($7!) and had a nice talk with the one volunteer at the register about the current organ project and a few rumored things happening in the near future. She was really a great ambassador for their brand and truly showed that this is a living-breathing-vibrant Episcopal church. I'm not really a retail person so I doubt I'll be back but if you are into trinkets or curiosities then this place might be for you and at the least it's worth the short trip away from the CW buildings on DOG Street.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit the square that's nestled between The College of William & Mary and Colonial Williamsburg. During Christmas is one of my favorite times to visit this area. It was hoping too! Crowds were beginning to arrive in Williamsburg for The Grand Illumination the next day. There was music, and a Christmas spirit in the cool crisp air. I visited a few shops that I had time for that were both favorites and new to me. The Cheese Shop for a snack. This shop has been a place I have frequented for decades, it's awesome and an independent run store like most others. I went to R. Bryant, a men's store. Lulu lemon, Danforth Pewter and a new shop Walkabout Outfitters which is a small chain. It replaced a very well known and established independent store I shopped since early 2000. If you're looking for a unique place to shop, eat and also take in a show at the Kimball Theater then Merchants is the place.
