First of all....if you need a costume of ANY sort, look no further! This place has everything from 80s mania to steampunk!! Wigs, shoes, masquerade masks, canes, jewelry, any accessory you need to make your "look" complete! I've never seen a collection so vast! And it doesn't have the thrift store smell!! And the service.... I have to just say WOW ! I was given advice about a western look that I was asked to wear and I was so clueless and those ladies got me together! I did not know this place existed but I needed a last minute mask for a masquerade party and someone suggested I went there. They have masks all year long and order stuff too like Halloween costumes and costume jewelry. I ended up getting a mask for me and my wife and clip on earrings which came in clutch because clip on earrings are hard to find. Tracy was very helpful with helping me select the items I needed. Awesome store with a huge collection of costumes, (Halloween, Christmas, and even Easter) vintage clothes, jewelry, and props, with great, helpful staff. Stuff is kind of pricey but it's legit!! My sister is very much alternative/emo and we came here looking for a new addition to her wardrobe for her birthday. She decided on a corset. First, one of the employees measured her waist to find the correct size. Once that was done and we found the one she wanted, we attempted to put it on her but neither of us have worked with a corset before. When the ladies working caught wind that we were struggling, they swooped in. In the end, we found a corset for her that fit perfectly and was just her style. It was so cool of them to help us out! The lady in the photo had worked with so many corsets before and knew just what she was doing. She also gave my sister lots of tips for the future when she is wearing them. I love Echoes of time. During Halloween season this is my first stop for makeup. Usually work for Hunt Club during the season. They always give me great tips and tricks for makeup and jewelry. A few years ago my husband had a 1920's party and we were able to buy some shoes and he rented out some pieces for his costume. We took our niece and we had a blast. When u walk in there is a bunch of lockers to your right. If you have any type of a purse, backpack, fanny pack ( throw that away! ) Etc.. you have to lock these items away in the locker before entering the main store, so your shopping experience, starts off a bit awkward. Can we say overkill? Once you go into the main store it's actually really cool, packed with costumes and accessories. Because this is a operational year long costume shop it enables them in some magical way.....to overprice most of the items. But if you want to impress all the drunk people at your adult dress up party... You will be paying LOL. If you do not want to buy you can rent the costumes. I'm a photographer and needed an ethenic looking Indian Head piece. They had it! Which is way awesome. But to rent it for one day would cost me. I love this place. I run a murder mystery party business and generally my customers all shop here to get their costumes. I used to encourage them to come here, but lately the rudeness of one of the sales clerks has made me reluctant to push business their way. The last two times I've been there, this one girl, who says she's the daughter of the owner, has been extremely rude. The first time, she kept telling me to turn corsets around, as I was trying them on. But, if I turned them around, the breast-cups were on my back... So she doesn't really know what she's talking about. The last time I was there, one of the clerks showed me to a section in the back where they had discounted a lot of the costumes and even had a few old rentals for sale. I found one I loved, and when I went to the counter. That same girl who asked me to wear a corset backwards, told me that the costume wasn't for sale, and said she had to "call her mom." I didn't mind, despite the fact that the tag said "sale, $20" on it. Once she got off the phone with her mom, she rolled her eyes and said "whatever" and shoved the costume into the hands of another clerk and then we finished the sale, because her mom had indeed told her that the costume was for sale and on sale. She gives the place a bad vibe and her rudeness is off-putting. I am reluctant to keep sending my customers there, because I don't want them to have to keep dealing with this woman. read more

This was the first time my girlfriend and I visited the store which by the way was a referral from a friend of ours. The owner Kathy was gracious and very helpful and very patient with my girlfriend and I as we picked costumes for a birthday party for this weekend. I loved this place! When I walked in they were shooting their commercial for tv and for the inconvenience the owner gave me a discounted price on the dresses I bought. Their stock was extensive, half the store being cheesy Halloween costumes and the other half being pretty well curated vintage clothing. The women's dresses were the best finds and if I ever needed to go to prom again, this is the place I would find my dress! They have new and old accessories, shoes and a 10 dollar section. Their prices aren't rock bottom, but you are paying for quality pieces that have been picked for their beauty and condition. I have a real shopping problem and Echoes of Time is an enabler. I wish this store would just swallow me whole and spit me out, clad in one of a kind vintage pieces. This little hole in the wall in the middle of nowhere is such a wonderful find. Anytime I want jewelry or clothing that everyone will ask where I got and I'll reply, "Oh, sorry, it's vintage," I head to Echoes of Time. Halloween costumes here are perfect too. Don't let the small frontage fool you, this place is HUGE. As you enter bags and purses need to be locked in a small locker. I didn't mind that at all, I didn't have to carry it around. I'm sure the reason is to prevent theft, I get that. There are rows and rows of vintage and costume clothing. Some are for purchase and some are for rent. What blew me away were all the accessories. The store itself is amazing its their policies & staff that make you think twice. They have these strange lockers where they yell at you to place your purse before entering. What the hell? Which of you ladies of Hampton Rhodes were going into the make believe store and stuffing costumes into your 6 by 4 inch coach bags? The paranoia did not stop there! I choose a large queen of england style costume which included a cloth crown draping in a zip lock plastic bag. Im shown to a dressing room which is an area with a curtain that did not close you off 100%. As i go to place the crown on the assistant whod askd me 5 times before if i were ok yells "Do you have a bag in there?!" & then burst under the curtain as if to catch me in the act of stealing. If id been naked id have been exposed to the entire register section. After realizing im using the stuff i got from them she just says "oh" and leaves, no apology or anything. I undress and hand her there costume back. She then seemed surprised i didnt care any longer to fork over $95 for the costume id absolutely adored 2 minutes earlier. Grabbed my purse from the thieves den & drove to Party City. Crappy costume but i wasnt treated like a criminal. They wont get my money. read more

I'm (sadly) not local, but any time I travel south to visit family, I make a point of making a pilgrimage to Echoes at least once during my trip! From a plethora of costumes to a vintage collection organized by waist measurement (because vintage sizes are impossible to use with contemporary standards) to a selection of retro dresses to die for (I wear my Universal Monster dress at least once a week), this shop has something for everyone. On the accessory front, they range from true vintage rhinestone pieces to large, plastic costume jewelry, with a large selection of quirky sunglasses. The selection is great, and the store is a lot bigger than I expected - but as with several of the other reviews, I noticed a lot of things that seemed overpriced for a resale/rental shop. The number one reason for my poor review is the criminalization before you even walk in the door, which then proceeds to get worse as you walk through the hall. Demanding patrons put their bags in a locker is too much for me. I came with someone who wanted to browse, or I would have simply turned around and left. I wore a pocketless-dress, so I had no place to store my phone or wallet while shopping. The store had several other shoppers there, and I was absolutely not comfortable putting my purse in a locker by the front doors far beyond my sight. My bag went back into the car hidden under my seat: The "no purses" signs decided for me that I would not be purchasing anything. I empathize that perhaps they have had issues with stealing, but I do not feel that is an excuse to make new customers feel unwelcomed and uncomfortable. read more

Awesome place! It was recommended to us by family to help us find masquerade masks. They did have a large assortment more than what 1 Party City location we visited earlier had. No disrespect to Party City they still rock but Echoes in Time is a totally different store and shouldn't be compared to anyone. Large inside and selections beyond my imagination. Easy to find. It kind of shocked me in the beginning, but once I got in I can totally see why. There is a lot of things. It's H U G E. There are a ton of things and the ladies apologized and let me know that a few bad apples were the cause of the whole thing. I find that awful but now I get it. I actually enjoyed not having my purse after awhile cause I kept carrying too much stuff. I probably would've set it down and forgot about it. For those who seem upset: How do you miss the billion of signs in the hallway before you get down? I saw it on the door and again as I walked in. The prices vary. I guess it just depends on how much you want to spend. I just needed a few things, but one guy in there was getting decked out for something so I assume the price just depends on what you want. This shop seems to be more for better accessories and stuff. If you are trying to be on a budget, I don't know if this is a place for you. The people are absolutely what make it. A girl named Bridget had me laughing the entire time. She was super nice and was always ready to help me. She was super fun to talk to and from what I saw her with other customers, she was really good at throwing outfits together. I recommend talking to her! She's a hoot! The other girl, Tera, was also super helpful. You can tell both girls really love their job and other people. There is an inexplicable shortage of good vintage shops in Hampton Roads. This is one of the few. And it's a damn good one. They have a great selection of all the major periods of clothing. The racks and display cases are packed to the rims with stuff. I used to be a bit of a vintage freak. When I first moved here I sold a few items to Echoes of Time for some extra cash and they gave me a fair deal. In addition to vintage, they also have a lot of replica costume items: clown noses to '50s specs to disco platforms with goldfish in the heels. It is THE go-to spot for funky Halloween wear to rent/buy. If there's something in particular that you want for a costume, however, make sure to reserve it early. They are super busy at Halloween. They rent all year 'round, even for their regular vintage items. I once rented this great '60s satin skirt for a dress-up party I had at my old job. I had something really unique to wear and I didn't have to pay a fortune for the privilege of having it hang in my closet for the next 10 years. read more

I was referred to go to this establishment yesterday in the last minute. I did, find what I was looking for the 1st trip there--in fact I made 2 trips in 1 day but my 2nd trip was awful--however, it was brought to my attention that they carry real furs/mink capes/drapes and actually have in abundance and were trying to get rid of them, I was shown a specific item that was $30, not too bad, right? Well they have them in several colors and 1 color in particular was $45 and very worn in front. We asked the employee could the price be negotiated for how worn it was, she asked for owner, in front of us, and she was an extremely RUDE bleep about it. Very cold, condescending, nasty attitude because of what she spent to get it BUT it is NEVER the consumers problem that YOU over paid for a worn item. She even stated, "I don't care because anywhere else would sell them for $200 or more and I have it for $45, you have to be kidding me?!" I had half a mind to curse her out!!! I have even considered disputing the charge with my bank due to the customer service but I found it better to write this review instead. My advice, if you're going to give the impression that your establishment is over stocked with a type of merchandise, some in good shape; some not so much, then you probably shouldn't have employees telling consumers that you are trying to get rid of them and when there's tattered items in the mix, be flexible. I couldn't believe how big of an a hole she was being!! I will spread this experience to everyone and every business owner I know!! Being a successful business owner, myself, in the service industry! Great costume for my daughter's birthday. There was a glitch though the lady who rented mr. Mouse took the miss mouse too with her and when i went to pick it up they didn't have it. I was so upset. They went to pick it up and brought it to my house. I just wish i had got some money back or something because i drove all the way there for nothing.
