During my first week, I didn't have a UK cell phone plan so I could only look up things when I had internet or see things with my own eyes whilst walking! I was dying for some food a couple of days after arriving and looked up cafes with lunch that were near where I was staying -- that's how I discovered The Treehouse (little did I know I would end up passing it many times while walking!). Despite having an idea of what I would order, I read the menu upon arriving. My American myself was unsure of the names of some ingredients, since they differ from the names used in the US, but the cashier was kind enough to help me figure everything out! I ended up opting for a mozzarella panini with rocket (arugula) and tomato. It came with a little salad on the side and I ordered an Irn-Bru to drink. I took it to-go and really enjoyed everything that I got! I ended up coming back a couple of more times for food for myself and with friends since it was so conveniently located. Overall, I enjoyed my experiences at The Treehouse and it will hold a little place in my heart for being one of the first places I went to after arriving to study abroad :) definitely recommend!

Dimly lit and getting darker as the night goes on, with staff welcoming you like an old friend and an impeccable music selection. - No, seriously, did you hack my Spotify, Montpeliers? It's all so effortless and fun, and above all, done very well. I am happy to indulge. My spicy mango sour did the trick. I sometimes like to ask for a recommendation when I can't decide and Iona's tip was spot on. The cocktail menu is extensive; there's something for all tastes. This was delicious. - Not too spicy, not too sweet. Followed up by the cherry nuts shot with black cherry rum and amaretto. This cherry-lover approves and this served as a dessert to round the night off to a better end. Was it okay that they had run out of shot glasses and opted for a short cocktail glass and also topped it with a tonne of cream? Umm, YES. No disappointment here. Service was attentive despite the bar overflowing on a Friday night. This was just what we were after and is a wonderful spot for a drink. You'd be missing out if you didn't have a cocktail. If you're not drinking, there's an interesting selection of mocktails too. Cheers, Montpeliers! - You know just how it's done.

Fantastic Deli/ Café with better coffee than most food-focused places in Edinburgh…read more (UPDATE: Coffee quality has definitely deteriorated since the early days and this is no longer a place where I expect coffee that is anything better than "drinkable". The food still holds up, though!) I started going to Rocket in 2008 when I studied at Napier, and it proved to be a very reliable regular spot for me as they were incredibly friendly, reasonably priced and indulged my freestyle sandwich filling whims without fuss. They also do a remarkably good coffee for a Deli, even if it's not as good as what you would get at places that have coffee as their primary focus. So the quality of the coffee is a bit up and down but always serviceable, but it's the food that makes it good! You can pick from their extensive menu of lunch options, including a lot of British classic and South-American ones. Their sandwiches, though! Oh, the sandwiches! See, the thing is that they have a huge array of great toppings, and a nicely put together list of suggested combinations of them... But they'll let you "freestyle" it if it pleases you. And BOY does it please me! They tend to have to really struggle to close their baguettes up by the time I finish. All wonderful, fresh toppings that create an absolute cornucopia of lively taste sensations. I do wish they had clotted cream for their scones, though, and I would love for them to have some bread that was a bit more substantial, gave a bit more resistance to the bite. It's very fluffy, very light, and I tend to prefer the heavier, bitier breads. If they had the option of something tougher and made with more rye/ spelt/ etc, I'd be a super happy camper. Still, a very strong contender and one of my favourite lunch places in Edinburgh. I have been known to take a detour just to go here. :)

They have great sandwiches and delectable treats (my favourite being the chocolate/graham cracker/fudge fridge tray bake - not sure what the actual name is?!) I was here about three weeks ago with my boyfriend for lunch. I was feeling like something texmex so I chose the chicken burrito while my boyfriend ordered the chicken and chorizo club sandwich. I was very satisfied with my burrito and my boyfriend was satisfied with his meal. See the picture that I added! The staff are very friendly although sometimes the service can be a little slow. They can be quite busy especially mid-morning. I believe you can reserve a table if you call in advance. If you are in the area and require a nice, healthy, lunch definitely check this place out.

I'm not one to be a Debbie-Downer leaving a 3 star review on the brand-new-swanky cafe/restaurant…read morein Bruntsfield... But I have to be honest to my fellow yelpers out there! Let's start with the things they're doing right. First of all, I love the interior. They've chosen the most beautiful, light airy unit and have been respectful to the original features (especially the gorgeous, large windows). The branding is cohesive and extremely endearing, with little bees on most things from the menus to the counter. They are also part of a charity which helps the preservation of bees in the UK, which I loved! I'm also pleased to see them using Artisan Roast beans for their coffees and lots of locally sourced produce for their food. So what's the problem I hear you cry? Well it was one simple (yet usually delicious) word: PANCAKES! I ordered them and they were completely raw in the middle. Again, I'm hearing you say "3 stars for raw pancakes is a little harsh, isn't It?!" So I spoke to the server about my raw pancakes, to which they said sorry and took them away to make me a new batch. Now, the pancakes that were returned to me were burnt with a slightly, less raw middle. They were genuinely worse than the first ones. Not one server came to ask me about the second lot , and the owners and managers never came over (even though I saw that they were informed in the first instance). When my plate was taken, the waiter asked if they were any better because I had left all but one bite of the burnt pancakes. I explained they were even worse and this guy is the reason that honeycomb aren't getting 2 stars! He apologised and agreed with how bad they looked. He also took the pancakes off the bill which I really appreciated. So all in all, go here for coffees and to sample their cakes but "bee" careful not to order the pancakes!

The owners came by a little later due to a little issues of misplacement which was no big deal to us. When they arrived they let us hang out inside as they opened up their shop. The two owners were very nice and friendly and gave my friends and I a great history of their cafe and of Edinburgh. We enjoyed it a ton, however, we enjoyed getting our food the most! One of us got a vegan roll, another got a vegan haggis plate, and another guy and I got the largest platters possible. My plate came loaded with haggis, blood sausage, bacon sausage, hash brown, two eggs, beans, tomato, mushrooms, and sausage. I was full for a long time that day thanks to that delicious breakfast. I would definitely come back here again if I'm ever able to visit Edinburgh again!
