5 of us came here on a Sunday at 2200 to have dinner. With 6 tapas, and 5 drinks the bill came out to 65 Euros. Food: (5 stars) Cod Stuffed Mushrooms: (5 stars) likely the best thing we ordered. Mushrooms with bacon and cheese: (4.5 stars) pretty good but not as good as the cod stuff ones. Sausage and cheese plate: (5 stars) A good variety of both, would recommend if you have a larger group. If it is only two people, would choose something else. (It is a pretty filling portion) Shrimp in Garlic Sauce: (4 stars) this is a very tasty portion, a bit on the smaller side. Caprese salad: (4 stars) it was good, nothing amazing. Pork Sandwich: (4.5 stars) really good, not the best for sharing. They no longer have draft beer, only craft beer for which they charge 4.5 Euros. Service: A bit slow, but nothing horrible. They speak pretty good english. They do not accept foreign (non Portuguese) credit cards, so we had to pay with cash. Atmosphere: (4 stars) There are only a few tables here in a pretty quiet street. read more

After touring the sites of Coimbra we were looking for lunch and found this highly rated place on our walk down from the University. We were the first to grab an outside table and soon the other three tables were filled. That was it for patrons so you would think that the kitchen/ waiter could handle it. Nope. The waiter was the most inefficient server I had ever witnessed... This was one excruciatingly slow meal. The food itself was a mixed bag the sausage was quite tasty as was the mushroom with bacon. The bread of the ham & cheese sandwich was very dry and the can of sardines was... a can of sardines. I cannot recommend unless you want to linger over lunch for 1.5-2 hours. The food here is delicious, the portions generous, and the staff very helpful and friendly. The place is small and a bit hard to find in a very hilly area but definitely worth the effort. The restaurant itself is tiny but there's a fairly large outdoor seating area which was our choice. We had 4 dishes - anchovies in tomato sauce, chicken gizzard, shrimp in filo dough, and portobello mushrooms stuffed with cod. Everything was good and the bill was around €30. read more

What a fantastic place to have a late night dinner. My wife and I showed up around 22:00. It was chilly outside but very warm in the restaurant. We a great meal with a bottle of wine and it was only $37.50. It is easy to miss the restaurant because there is no flashy sign outside. Not only did we have a great dinner but we also had some wonderful entertainment. The chef in the kitchen had a continuous stream of 80's music, we loved it. Between the servers' relaxed and attentive interactions, recommendations and stories, and the thoughtful, tasty and tasteful food experience, this felt like what I'd imagine elevated homecooking and eating at home might be like were I from here - mushrooms cooked just enough for their flavor to draw through, with juices and resiliency to remain intact, creamy sauces made slightly thick as if your grandmother really, really wanted you to feel her desire for your enjoyment. Sausages were cooked perfectly crispy, exploding with each warm bite, with cheeses curated across textures and tastes, sliced just right. This small restaurant is a true gem hidden in the ruas of old town Coimbra. The host is kind and willing to chat and explain every recipe, and while she cooks she even entertains the audience with fado. A friend in Coimbra took us to this spot where she is a regular. We didn't each much, but we had a couple of tapas to go with our wine. The shrimp and bruscetta were nice, but not extraordinary. We stopped in Coimbra to see the chapel on our way to Evora but wanted to grab a bite and were worried we would not find anything palatable and here we find Maria of Portuguese! This is a tiny place with a friendly staff and wonderful food. They can make most dishes on the menu vegan and have a nice array of vegetarian dishes as well. We had the creamy spinach and mushroom pasta (made with soy cream) and the portabella mushrooms stuffed with vegetables and topped with mozzarella. Both were amazing, with great spices and perfect balance of flavors. At the end of the meal they gave us each a shot of special liquor from grape residue (free :)) Everything was delicious and the staff were gracious and friendly. read more

Unfortunately did not have the best experience here, the reviews from other people were misleading. The prices are expensive and portions are small, definitely a tourist trap. To make things worse the server gave us wrong food but luckily we got the right dish for free. To our surprise the dish we had originally ordered was so small and not filling. We are vegans and have had a difficult time finding good vegan or even vegetarian food in Portugal but Maria's certainly ranks near the top of vegan/ vegetarian restaurants which we have encountered . In addition , as a previous carnivore I can tell you all of the food and meat dishes ( I saw on other tables ) looked excellent . Great place in the heart of the old town. If you manage to stop in here, do yourself a favor and get the stuffed mushrooms with cheese and bacon. We also had the port wine sausage with caramelized apples on top which was amazing. Beyond the amazing food, a highlight for me was the fact they had some Portuguese beer on hand. I know we were in northern Portugal, home to some amazing wines, but the Dois Corvois Pale Ale was exactly what I needed at the time.
