We recently visited Maria's Alterations to ask about hemming a dress and adjusting the sleeves. The dress we brought was a simple black floor-length gown with a slit--something that could easily be worn to prom, as a bridesmaid dress, or to a cocktail event. Based on the shop's own description of handling "formalwear," we believed it would qualify. At the entrance, a sign stated the shop was by appointment only and for bridal and formalwear. Since we were already there, we stepped inside to confirm and possibly set up an appointment. Inside, the woman (presumably Maria) was sitting on her phone. She stood up when we walked in, and after we asked about the dress, her response was simply "no." There was no explanation, no apology, and no effort to help point us in a better direction. The interaction was short, dismissive, and left us feeling unwelcome. To be clear--the problem was not that the shop has limits on what it will alter. That is understandable. The problem was how it was handled. A professional response could have been as simple as, "I'm sorry, we only take bridal gowns, but you might try this other tailor." Instead, there was no kindness, no helpfulness, and no effort to provide good service. While older reviews may praise the quality of the work, our experience suggests customer service is lacking. If you are considering this shop for an important dress, especially something sentimental like a wedding gown or prom dress, think carefully before booking. Professionalism and respect are just as important as skill, and unfortunately, that was not what we experienced here. read more

Maria is kind, extremely helpful and just purely talented. I had quite a difficult dress to take in. It had a lot of appliqué and lace I was very nervous that it would mess up the dress. She truly blew my expectations out of the water and then some. My dress fit perfectly on my wedding day and I felt amazing I forgot I even got it taken in. I would give Maria 10 stars if I could! I came to Maria with a very big project. I got my bridesmaid dress in the mail which took almost two months to receive and when it came in (with less then 4 weeks left until my brothers wedding) it was too small! Instant panic mode I searched and found Maria and thank goodness I did. I knew it wasn't going to be an easy fix but she took it on anyway. She is so fast and does incredible work, I couldn't have imagined my dress looking this good. Maria saved my life!!! I don't know what I would've done without her help. I recently took a day dress to Maria, it was a dress I had found at a small boutique while on vacation this summer. It didn't fit me at all, the entire thing needed to be taken in, from the waist line, the neck line, the straps, under the arms. Maria made my dress fit perfectly!! Not only does it now fit perfectly you cannot even tell she touched the dress, there is so much detail in this dress, and she made the design flawless with having to take it in so many areas! On a Sunday, I needed 3 work clothes tailored to be shorter for an interview the next day, and she agreed to do the job, finished them at the perfect length and for a great, reasonable price.
