Fresh Thyme Market - This is nice that they have the cart return directly next to the handicapped parking.

Yet I always find their produce to be super fresh and not picked over. They do have a large selection of organic and vegan items. It's nice because you don't need to hunt them like you do in the larger grocery stores. As far as the meat/seafood. The people who work it are great but the cuts are so/so. Pretty much the same things you find elsewhere.

A visually appealing store, with fair prices for specialty "healthy, organic" living. The radishes were gigantic --but really hot-- but we were able to purchase other salads at comparable prices to other major chains. They have an extensive deli featuring Boarshead, but nothing really prepared there, huge disappointment because it's really what we came for. Everything is frozen or ready to heat, with nothing hot and ready to eat. I mistakenly got the sushi-- which I was later to learn was NOT fresh tasted like it had been sitting all day and not very eatable. Standard nigiri which should be easy? Yuck! Should be time stamped!!!! We will also try some of the andouille sausages and hamburgers but the seafood and meat selections looked good --for whatever that's worth. The store is very clean with a huge selection of products, we only sampled a small percentage with somewhat mixed results.

I like to get their soaps as stocking stuffers as they are interesting and most options are plastic free. They had some organic vegan chocolate as well as unique chapsticks. I overhead their eggnog sold out early this year so apparently it's very popular. The employees are very helpful and attempted to give me ideas on other brands or stores to try when an item I was looking for wasn't available (they have lots of sls free toothpaste, but they were also fluoride free). The store is always well maintained, clean, and organized. Everything is labelled with a clear price on the item itself so no confusion. Always a nice visit.

The prices are all over the place but comparable to other independent stores. I was looking for a few things and came in to support a local business. It has a pretty large selection considering how small the store is. There's several shelves of vitamins. It also has some food. They have vegan nutrition bars that are about $2 each, which is okay. I like supporting independent businesses. It's even better when they're health food stores. This is one of the coolest hidden places in Mount Vernon.

My takeaway from visiting Wheeling is that the people of Wheeling love their public markets. There…read moreare two of them in this small city. This public market (named ... wait for it ... Public Market) is the smaller of the two markets. It's small, but it also houses the Wheeling Visitor Center, so it's still important. There's a little grocery store inside, with lots of fresh produce and local goods, like honey, jams and breads. They also had an astounding amount of probiotic foods, like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and other fermented foods. These are located in a refrigerated section by the produce. I was told that Public Market would be a good place to get something to eat, but I couldn't find anything but groceries. When I asked a lady if there was a restaurant or food stall or some place to get a bite inside public market, she said, "They'll make you a little something. What do you want? A sandwich? They'll make you a sandwich." She walked away, and I was left puzzled. Who is "they"? And yes, I did want a sandwich, so who did I need to ask to make me one? Alas, I never did find this fabled sandwich-maker inside Public Market, but apparently, they do serve food here. Maybe I just visited on a day when "they" weren't there. Like I mentioned, the Wheeling Visitor Center is located here. It's in a small section at the front entrance, tucked away. This is also home to the Wheeling-Ohio County CVB. Apparently, sometimes there's someone behind the desk who you can talk to, and sometimes there isn't. Much like the sandwich-maker, I think if you're there at the right time, you'll see them. But if not, there's always literature and pamphlets and information about the area that you can pick up and take with you.
