This was our first time in SMA and we were excited to see some of the homes in this gorgeous city. Unlike the tours in Puerto Vallarta where you typically see 5 homes, the SMA tour only features 2 homes. That was "ok" as both homes were lovely and allowed us to visit two different neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the entire tour was overshadowed by a couple of poor management experiences and one truly unacceptable incident. In terms of the management, they failed to control the flow of people (even though making attempts to separate the groups and having us depart at different times). This resulted in over crowding of the houses. This also resulted in having more people than bus space after visiting the second house so that people had to be standing on the one remaining bus and several people didn't have rides at all. Apparently, they had let the other buses leave without accounting for all of the people from that particular tour group. I could overlook these management issues if it were not for the incident that occurred at the second house. Unlike any other house tour I've experienced, we were instructed to leave our purses at the front door and then we were instructed to follow a particular pathway through the rooms. The house was filled with lovely art so, although a bit odd, it was somewhat understandable. The trouble happened when we went upstairs. At the top of the stairs was as small landing leading to an outdoor patio and a bedroom. It felt like a natural flow to see the patio first. We then came back in and attempted to enter the bedroom when we were confronted by a volunteer named John Hittell that barked at us that we were supposed to see the bedroom first before the patio. I apologized and explained calmly that we weren't aware of that but we would still like to see the bedroom. Mr Hittell, who appeared strangely agitated continued to state that we should have seen it before the patio. I asked why it made a difference, he didn't respond and I continued into the bedroom. A few minutes later I was leaving the bedroom and ready to walk downstairs to conclude the tour but the landing and the stairway were crowded with people so I politely leaned against the wall to wait and allow people to clear the walkway so I could exit. During this time, Mr. Hittell continued to bully others as he had me - interrogating them about whether they had already seen the patio or the bedroom. The entire exchange was surreal. Then I heard him yell in my direction to "MOVE". I couldn't believe I I heard him correctly, so I asked (again very calmly) "did you just ask me to move?" He yelled back that he had. All of us within earshot were staring at each other astonished at this behavior. I then quietly asked for his name as I made my way downstairs. This man has no business in this role. He is perhaps the worst representative this organization could have. Just because someone is willing to volunteer does not mean they have the temperament to be a volunteer. It's unclear to me what made Mr Hittell so exceptionally angry and flustered, but anyone who can become so unhinged with no provocation seems unstable and should not be interfacing with the public. I will not be going on any future tours with this group until they remove Mr Hittell from their roster.

My mother and I went on the tour knowing we had to be exactly back at the bus terminal at 7:30 pm. We let the tour guides (Gabriel Alcaraz who narrated the tour & Jose Luis who was our driver) know ahead of time of our time crunch and they were more than accommodating! The tour was kept at an easy pace but always mindful of the time. We of course made it to the terminal on time to catch our bus back to Guadalajara! For a price of $8US per person, this is a lot of entertainment even if you have no idea what's being said. You will no doubt notice the attractively costumed performers in town, mostly at the Jardin de la Union. It's these performers who will lead you through the streets in the evening, playing their instruments, singing, and telling stories. They will also offer additional things for sale including huge clay pots containing your choice of tequila or vodka drinks and other things I won't mention, not wanting to give away any surprises. In truth, I had essentially no idea of what was being said but in no time I was singing along and swaying to the lyrics of one song that was oft repeated. It's fair to say that everyone had a smile on their face pretty much the entire time. There's a good deal of walking, up and down the charming streets of Guanajuato as well as stopping for stories, jokes, and music. I got my tickets on TripAdvisor but you can also purchase from tourist booths in town or from the performers themselves. I can't imagine coming to Guanajuato and not partaking in the Callejoneada experience. Surely more fun if you understand the stories but the joy of the whole performance is undeniable.

We came here on December 28th (yes, Mexican fools day) and when we parked our cars we we're approached by Miguel, who is the Public Relations director of Tuna Compostela. He gave us a good deal as he did not charge us for our kids and gave us an adult for free and that if we wanted to go, we had to purchase them right away as they have limited attendance. BTW we were a group of 18 people. So far it was good until we showed up to our 8:15pm show where he had promised we were going to have 80 min of "callejoneada" with a big entertainer (El Gordo), as well as a "porrón" for our fruit juice. He did say they no longer serve alcohol. Well, long story short we did not get our "porrón", they started with a nice show in front of Iglesia de San Diego, and then departed to start the "callejoneada" with approximately 150 people!!!! It was insane! We could barely catch up with the crowd. We decided to go back and select a different show. We waited until the one at 9pm as it seemed less attended. Well, we were probably over a hundred customers walking along the stretched streets of Guanajuato. It was scary at some point as you could barely move in some of the streets...some of them are so narrow that it can only fit 2 persons! So you can imagine waiting for all the crowd to go through this bottleneck. As we moved along, they played nicely. However with so many people in the streets, we didn't arrive at the most iconic place: "Callejón del Beso". You could barely get into that street. So they left us a block from there and then they finished the show. It's good if they truly adhered to their promises. But this was disheartening as we won't trust again next time we are here...we will walk on our own and just watch their show at the church. Disappointed...

The drivers speak both English and Spanish, which was a huge bonus for us Spanish-limited "foreigners". We were so pleased with our cheerful, personable, and historically knowledgeable driver, Uriel, that we have since complete 2 additional all day tours (again, just the two of us and driver), to cities well outside Queretaro, including Pena Bernal and Guanajuato. We couldn't be more enthusiastic in recommending Uriel and his tour company. When we return again (and we WILL), this will be the first place we call for our next tour!
