When the well's dry, we know desperately the worth of water. I've been a customer of Marin Municipal Water District on and off since October 1975. It began operation 25 April 1912. PROS Unlike far too many other businesses: Their customer service has always been adequate with me. They properly credit my payments, have never misapplied my payment. Their website is reasonably user friendly for me. It has a lot of information I find useful as I review it once a month. So why is it not better harvesting its water? Why isn't California storing all its rain water? Marin Municipal Water District, like all California water companies, has some reservoirs and dams for water storage. Most of the rain Marin gets has been and is flowing into storm drains that direct the rain into the Pacific Ocean or San Francisco Bay. I define that as water waste. I define that as a lack of storm water management. Instead of only water-conserving landscapes, I see too many water-guzzler grass lawns in Marin. I define that as water waste. I see far too much water-guzzler grass that is nonfunctional in Marin, including grass between roads and sidewalks and in medians, traffic circles, strips outside business parks, housing developments / homeowners associations, and more. I define that as water waste. The artificial turf industry has long been known to reduce carbon footprints by conserving billions of gallons of water per year by eliminating the need to water lawns. Artificial grass also eliminates the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers. How about more underground aquifer storage aka wells, and above-ground enclosed storage tanks to store rainfall? How about above-ground enclosed storage tanks with retractable covers to catch rainfall? How about requiring roof gutters to direct rain water to stay on the property instead of wasting it into the storm drains? How about requiring homeowners and business owners harvest rain water for irrigation on their property? For rain is the time to be banking the water. Especially the rain from the these atmospheric rivers. When life places stones in your path, be the water. A persistent drop of water will wear away even the hardest stone. Unfortunately, like far too many businesses, Marin Municipal Water District does NOT have a Military Discount for the rare 1/2% of 1% of the population who are Active Duty, or a Veterans Discount for the rare 7% of the population who are Veterans. I would've rated 'em higher if they had a Military and Veterans Discount. I say to businesses and their owners. Like your Freedom? Then thank Active Duty and Veterans for it with a publicly disclosed Veterans and Military Discount every day. Bravo Bravo--Great Park Rangers looking out for the hikers! Probably many people don't realize that this utility actually manages a very large watershed containing many lakes and reservoirs. I had the good fortune to run into one of your Park Rangers--Barry. I was on a fairly long bike ride around the lakes in the Mount Tamalpais watershed, and had gone off hiking on the Pumpkin trail near Lake Lagunitas. The park ranger happened to see my bike left near a trail. He actually parked and waited a half hour to make sure I was okay. Of course, I was okay, but he did not know that. I could have been seriously hurt and he wanted to make sure everything was all right. So he went the extra mile. When I returned and reassured the ranger I was okay, we had a great conversation talking about the Watershed and geocaching Adventures. This area is probably one of the most beautiful properties in the entire Northern California Bay Area. I appreciate the diligence of your employees, as well as preserving the safety of the water supply. That's what I call outstanding service! (Next time I will leave a note on my bike.) read more

This review is specifically regarding my experience on public lands within and maintained by the Marin Municipal Water District; I can't speak to the quality of other services they provide as an agency. I hiked the Cataract Falls to Potrero Meadows Loop that's adjacent to Mount Tamalpais State Park and it was an amazing outdoor recreational experience. Including taking a few spurs, the hike was just under 7 miles and though there were some short stretches of flat easy terrain, you'll work up a sweat on most of the hike. The best part about it is the diversity of scenery and terrain from sweeping vistas to rocky canyons, woods, grassland, scrubland and seasonal creeks. There's a little bit for everyone on this hike and the trails are well maintained and easy to navigate for the most part. I really had the sense that I was far away from it all on this hike and it was mostly quiet with the occasional hiker or small group passing by on the trail. There's some considerable elevation in this area and be prepared for that on the drive (or bike) up to the trail head. Of course there are several other trails in the District lands you can opt for as well. All in all if you're looking for a nature escape that's in the Bay Area give this a try sometime. read more

Most of us when we deal with the Marin Municipal Water District deal with just our water bill that comes to the mail and we never really see any human beings behind the scenes. I was doing some research on the Watershed at Alpine Lake and was curious about the history of the construction of the dam. I was invited by Crystal and Donna in the Heritage properties Department. They were so nice to spend time away from their desk to help me collect enough information to write a story for the group that I was writing for. I got to see original photographs of the construction of the entire damn. What a wonderful thing to see and they were so helpful and kind to me when I got there. It was a wonderful experience. Little do we know when we come to the front desk to pay a late bill or have our water turned off or on that there are so many people in the background you never think about that are so willing to help their customers that are interested in their history and the work that they do. They charged me for 10X my bill through the online portal. When I found the mistake they didn't want to give the money back. Just credit my account. After a lot of begging, the agreed to have a check waiting for me the next Friday. Friday rolls around and no check. They say to check back next Friday. I couldn't believe it. Marin Municipal Water District is now putting so much chemical in the water that my eyes burn in the shower. Today, I was washing vegetables at the kitchen faucet and the fumes coming off the water are so strong that not only is the smell overpowering but my sinuses & throat are burning from the chemicals. THIS IS TOO MUCH CHEMICALS!!! I've lived here 30 years and never drunk unfiltered water but was never overpowered by my shower water before. HELP!!! read more

MMWD is a semiprivate semi public agency which follows its own dictates while appearing to permit local input. It is a job factory for county residents in search of an easy, relatively well-paying job, assuming they pass the initial few months of scrutiny. For years they said they were emphatically NOT In the 'recreation business' (hard to believe, since there are nearly 40,000 acres of public land they manage) which permitted rather impressive efforts to staunch the flow of cyclists that began to flood the county--the bay area's biggest in terms of public land per capita. This explains a conundrum: in the epicenter of mountain bike culture, offroad cycling is a grudgingly allowed pastime. They are anti-bicycle, and surprisingly pro "Round-up" (Monsanto weed control chemical).. and maintain a strange conflict of interest about their core mission: providing safe water to the county residents. They need to sell more water to keep fllling their coffers (i.e. paying for projects like bike-chasing rangers, or building creosote-saturated wooden walkways through fragile wetlands), but they don't reward water-saving efforts of their clientele. They are one of the biggest employers in the county, and Less Water Use would oblige them to shrink their staff, which is a pretty well-entrenched bunch of insiders (at least according to this outsider). Our solution: use nearly no water at all, in hopes that no desalination factory is built to preserve jobs and ruin the S.F. bay & estuaries of Marin County. Desalinated water contains thousands of prescription drugs, pesticides, fertilizers that flow into the bay and are not subject to regulation when run through desalination process. The US government has not, and cannot set acceptable levels for the many thousands of compounds we humans ingest because it's too daunting of a task (or as the GOP might put it, 'too expensive').
