I swam at the Kamiak High School pool as part of Shorewood High School Girl's Swim & Dive…read more(2006-2009). I loved coming to this school for swim meets because I loved the pool so much. The Kamiak Swim Team was formidable competition and I enjoyed getting all spirited up and coming here to race. The pool has built in bleachers (cement) that we could sit at if there weren't many spectators for a given meet. Locker rooms were easy to access and large with two bathroom stall areas. A small pool was available on the other side of the bulkhead of the competition lanes to warm-up and cool-down in. The pool deck was barely above the pool water level and had a grate to cycle overflow water. When there were a bunch of people in the pool for warm-up or the like the water level of the pool would get rather close to the pool deck or overflow meaning very shallow standing water near the pool's edge. I loved this pool deck height and design relative to pool water level. This is primarily because I had an asthma attack while swimming here and had to cross a lane line and pull myself out of the water before I lost all strength in my arms and legs. Not sure I would have had the same outcome if the pool had been designed like others to have several inches to a foot or more of vertical cement/pool deck to pull myself up and out over. There is zero glamor in not being able to finish a race. I am so grateful I had my asthma attack here, at a pool well designed so that I could get out of the water in time. I'd guess that's not what the pool designers had in mind for a low lying pool deck, but a definite perk for me swimming here: knowing that I could pull myself out of the water in time if I had an asthma attack while swimming. An all around beautiful and well designed pool. The rest of the campus that I saw the times I came to swim here were beautiful as well.

He was given the time and space to build relationships with staff and other students at his own pace, always supported but never rushed. Children at Clearwater learn what they are interested in, developing one of the most valuable lifelong skills--how to learn. Through observation and thoughtful discussions with students, staff, and family, my son has deepened his understanding of people, the world around him, and, most importantly, himself. In his two years at Clearwater, he has learned to navigate conflicts through the Justice Committee, advocate for his needs through the democratic process, and appreciate the significance of friendship, culture, and responsibility within a community. And along the way, he has also learned to read, perform arithmetic, estimate probability and statistics, and explore physics through hands-on construction. He loves drawing, music, and the logic of computer programming--all interests that have flourished in an environment where curiosity is nurtured. My teachers were good to excellent and I enjoyed the campus design. It has since been remodeled into a multi-story structure. I took part on the swim team all four years, track and field one spring, and water polo two springs. Some of the dynamics between students in my classes and in sports came to be a bit tiring, so I decided to take part in the Washington State Running Start program full-time from the autumn of 2008 to the spring of 2010. This meant I took 100% of my classes at Shoreline Community College instead of the high school. It was a great was to transition to college coursework and attain my first college degree in conjunction with my high school diploma as the credits I earned counted for both.

Both are student athletes, which requires a very flexible schedule to deal with all of the travel to events and tournaments. Their teachers genuinely cared about them. Chrysalis does a great job of placing the students with teachers that can allow them to see their potential. My kids speak highly about all of their teachers. My oldest is very academic and the flexible pace of Chrysalis provided her with a vehicle to move at an accelerated pace through the subject matter that interested her the most. She felt very prepared for college and is working on a master's degree currently. My son's focus is soccer, not academics, but he's warmed up to school, because of the Chrysalis model, and feels as confident as ever to enter college and succeed. Not to trash the public school education, I was a product of it and enjoyed it, but I don't believe they would have been able to cope with high school in the same way due to their set of circumstances.

The school knowingly accepts students with special needs but lacks the training or experience to deal with situations that arise as a result of those disabilities. My son has anxiety and high-functioning autism. In the first 2 weeks of school, he experienced a consistently disorganized educational experience. Class schedules changed regularly, without much notice. His teachers would change, also without much notice. My son's calendar would often be missing the invites for the remote class. I would have to call the school multiple times a day to get the meeting links. Teachers would be late to class (which are a short 30 minutes). The school regularly assured us of their experience with special needs children, yet continued to engage in highly triggering behaviors. When my son's disability manifested by missing some classes and cursing (once) in an email to a teacher, they used it as an opportunity to kick him out of the school. The real issue was that they were dealing with a staffing shortage and my son's disability presented an opportunity for them to solve for a business challenge. They tried to spin my son's behavior as a flagrant violation. A school that is intolerant of the messiness of children should re-examine whether they should be in the business of education. A school that lacks empathy for children with disabilities, yet knowingly accepts them and is surprised when the disability manifests is really just an unethical, for-profit business. Chrysalis does a good job of marketing, but be very careful about sending your children here. The narrative of personalized education and helping children that are struggling is simply not true. The narrative is appealing for parents who are looking for a school they can partner with, but don't be misled by the marketing.
