Not the most picturesque place for eating outside and a bit hard to reach without a car (bike ride will take you through Darmstadt's lovely industrial district) but the drink choices are more extensive than your typical biergarten and they have grills you can use if you bring your own stuff. The building cost a massive 77 million Euros! And whilst Darmstadt did need a proper conference centre, I'm not sure if it needed a 77 million Euro one. That said, it is easy to get to, being in the centre of Darmstadt, and architecturally it's quite interesting, it's supposed to look like a ship, and there's a bit of the old city wall merged into it. However, in my opinion it's simply in the wrong place. They've sort of squashed it in to fit, and the approach to the car park is like something out of Grand Theft Auto (one of the scary bits). The supposed opening gala was so overpriced and badly realised, no one wanted to go. German comic Helge Schneider cancelled because the place was still a building site, to quote I don't perform on building sites, I'd love to come back when it's finished. All in all it seems to be a bit of a white elephant. I can only hope the future will be more promising.

The breakfast was awesome!! It had everything - fruit and yogurt bar, pastry bar, assorted cereals and oatmeal, eggs, sausages, cappuccino machine, etc. The room was a good size with plenty of storage area for clothes and luggage. The bathroom had a really narrow bathtub so when showering, I found myself always sliding. They should just remove the tub and install walk-in showers. Also, no facecloths or hair conditioner. They use that 3 in 1 soap, shampoo, conditioner stuff. Fortunately, I had my own. But no facecloth. One thing I was pleasantly surprised by - the way the hotel is laid out, there is a large Zen Garden in the courtyards that separate the two sides of the hotel. You can't enter the garden, but the walls of large windows still give you a sense of tranquility. Every time I walked by, I just breathed a little more deeply and easily. The one thing I didn't appreciate - my stay was arranged and prepaid through AAA. When I wanted to leave a day early (and I gave MORE than 24 hours' notice), they refused to refund the day's charge. Something about "commission." I don't care about commissions. If I give over 24 hours' notice, I expect a refund. So I'll look to AAA about that.
