For many years I always said that I would one day get a kayak. Fast forward a few years later, and…read morethis past spring I made my dream come true. I purchased a Field & Stream Blade 80 Kayak, which fits perfectly inside my Jeep and allows me to be independent when kayaking, as I don't need help trying to hoist it onto my Jeep's roof, etc. This was my first kayak launch experience. The kayak launch is very busy. There are two launches. While there on a Tuesday night, the skies were grey and there was a threat of rain, but I wanted to get out on the water and use my kayak for the first time. There were many groups of people who were filing in and out of the kayak launch. We passed by a few kayakers as well, in our group. I found a Meetup group and the 5 of us went down the water toward the Niagara River and where Canal Fest is held every year in July. The kayak launch facility is very nice. Why did I only rate this site 3 stars? The Canadian geese! That's why! Although, they are nice to look at and watch, their excrement is everywhere. Watch where you step when you bring your kayak to the launch. Maybe don't wear open toed shoes either. There is a port-o-potty on site that everyone in my group used, but me. I guess it was maintained, but it still doesn't entice me to use it. There is also a path that runs through this area next to the canal. There was also a picnic bench to gather with friends. There is ample parking as well. There is also a dock next to the kayak launch.

It was a great day to sit in our lawn chairs and look towards the sky. A giant octopus, some kites with really long tails, a parrot, a unicorn. Lots of colors and shapes. There was a tent for kids to make their own kites and a candy give-a-way, also for the kids. Surprised that I saw no food trucks, but they might have been at the other end of the field.

The road within the park could use a lot more than temporary tar and a shovel of stuff that does NOT stay long before the potholes return. They should do it correctly and right, when they consider the crowds that frolic and play here. There isn't even true permanent bathroom facilities here till last year sometime, when temporary facilities were installed. A lot of investment and work is needed here before the park sinks into the sunset. Park is closed after sunset so don't even think of coming here to enjoy the Milky Way or meteor showers, etc. Police will come chase you off.

The sunsets seeen from this location are really nice with no distractions, as in other parks or locations: overhead wires/wires, too many tall trees, etc. Lots of ample parking with an overflow lot, and a pavillion for summer concerts!! Also popular with two very illuminated huge military memorials dedicated to the fighting Seabees of the Navy, and another just as big dedicated to the US Marine Corps! The park has a basketball court as well as a tennis court . You will usually see a few people fishing in the pond (you will also see many geese-this is their hangout). The playground area is loved by my grandchildren and the splash pad is really cute and has kept the kids cool on many days during this hot summer. This is a clean, well maintained park . If I had a preference, I would prefer a few more shaded/tree covered areas in the park , but if you love the sun and don't need any more shade than what the individual shelters provide-this is a great place .
