I've been seeing Dr. Marin since '99. He's been nothing short of capable and pleasant. About 6 years ago I was traveling and contracted an intestinal parasite from bad water in Southeast Asia. I subsequently made my way to Europe where I saw doctors in Italy, Austria, and Germany. None of them correctly diagnosed the problem and I therefore suffered through the rest of my trip. Upon my return Dr. Marin was able to immediately diagnose the problem, order the correct test, and then prescribe the correct anti-biotics. What a relief. I just saw him again today and he was great. Love Kay. Love Dr. Marin. Like one of receptionists- very sweet. But the other...seriously, is the attitude REALLY necessary when I'm sick calling in? Never mind that I had to call 6 times to get past the busy signal to get it to ring, she picks up and is extremely rude and short. Otherwise, they can usually get me in within a few days, and if not are willing to call in antibiotics if necessary. My wife & I recently moved to San Francisco and needed to find a primary care internist. I asked around, & was recommended to Dr. Marin. I read the reviews good & bad & had a 1st visit. I was very favorably impressed by his thoroughness, as well as his manner. He was caring and professional at the same time. Since that visit I had occasion to ask him a question about a complaint I was having; he answered by phone within an hour, and again, on the phone was thorough and nice. Likewise I requested a prescription on 2 occasions and got them same day. His secretary Marie was also very prompt & helpful in communicating my requests to the doctor. Best experience with a doctor in a long time. I just had my first appointment with Dr Marin. I was very skeptical because of the negative reviews. I went in with low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised. I was able to get an appointment for a physical within a week. I arrived 5 minutes before my appointment time and was handed some new patient paperwork. I had just started the paperwork when they came for me and told me I could finish it in the exam room. I thought I would be stuck in there for a long time waiting. Much to my surprise, a nurse came in and quickly took my height and weight. I started my paperwork again and then a minute later Dr Marin walked in. This was my first time there so he had a long series of questions about my health history and that of my family. He then proceeded to do a very thourogh physical examination with a pleasant bedside manner. I was concerned about a problem with my achilles tendon and he immediately wrote me a referral to a sports doctor. He then had the nurse come in and give me 2 shots. I couldn't believe it when I looked at my watch as I headed out the door and saw that the whole process only took 30 minutes! I had expected to sit in the waiting room for at least that long. Finally a doctor that understands that my time is valuable too. Oh, and the location was great too. Easy parking right across the street for $5. read more

Dr. Marin has been my primary care physician since 1997, it was only until this year 2015 that I no longer have him as one. The reason is because the healthcare field and Covered CA had destroyed the healthcare system from the federal government on down and he doesn't accept Covered CA plans. Dr. Marin has been our family doctor for close to ten years. Both my wife and I have nothing but good things to say about him. His knowledge, experience, and professionalism are all outstanding. Unlike some doctors I've encountered, Dr. Marin is always willing to talk in detail about medical questions we may have. His office is also extremely well-run. Even though they are busy, I have rarely, if ever, had to wait around for my appointment. I was 10 minutes late to my appointment and Dr. Marin refused to see me. That was not a problem. I take responsibility for my lateness and it was fair that they had to cancel me to keep the doctor on track. When I tried to make a new appointment, the only available appointment was a week or so away, which was not good since I was experiencing vertigo. This is where the problem began. Even though other doctors in the group had availability to see me sooner, the office refused to allow me to see them. I had to see Dr. Marin. So even though I was experiencing vertigo on a daily basis, I would have to wait at least a week to see a doctor. This is unacceptable. What's the purpose of having a medical practice with several doctors if you can only see one? read more

If you are looking for indifferent, disinterested medical care, this is your doc. My husband was diagnosed with cancer and Dr. Marin, his primary "caregiver" never contacted, followed up, checked on him once the diagnosis was received, even though the oncologist continued to notify him of my husband's condition. Sadly, my husband passed in January and Dr. Marin's staff has not even had the courtesy to stop mailing us their propaganda. I believe that Dr. Marin is typical of the heartless medical care of our era, but personally, I would not choose a doctor that is this removed from his patients. read more

I was a bit concerned by the hot and cold reviews but tried Dr Mark anyway. I must have had a lucky day, I arrived at 12:55 for a 1 oclock physical, before I had finished filling in the new patients forms I was asked to come through. Did the general nurse things then had a good long conversation with the doc that covered pretty much everything. Great manner, knowledgeable and friendly plus gave me a tetanus booster on the spot. Terrible, incompetent doctor. AVOID! Wastes your time, not thorough, does not read your chart to know who you are, what meds you are taking. Knows nothing about insurance and gives false insurance information. He has no idea what goes into an annual blood test and for two years in a row has missed basics like Vitamin D, Cholesterol, etc. He also gives you as the patient attitude, which is just unacceptable! His assistant is just as bad: incredibly rude and grumpy. What a waste of an appointment and copay. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Marin for 1.5 years, mostly because he was conveniently located downtown, but I have never experienced such a low quality work and tremendous attitude towards patients. All together, I probably had 3 office visit with him - all very mediocre, one of which was a yearly check up - where no blood work was done, nor my concerns over the back pain were considered. But on the last visit I draw a line. I have started a rash around my eyes and I have never experienced before and came in for a referral for an allergist, as I had and instinct feeling that I might be reacting to something. Not only Dr. Marin didn't want to give me a referral, but was trying just to give me a cortisone cream that would take care of the problem. Dr. Marin insisted that I don't need to see and allergist and at the most should go to dermatologist. He was very inattentive, uninterested and not wanting to find a solution to my problem rather a quick fix .At the end of the visit, he has suggested that our doctor/patient relationship is not working. I was shocked with such attitude, but relieved at the end. I went to an allergist and he did find that I have acquired a food allergy. I would never recommend Dr. Marin to anyone. There are so many doctors in SF who do their job with grace and actual medical knowledge. If you are stuck with this office, go see nurse practitioner there, she is much more diligent. read more

The secretary, assistant, or clerk, whatever you want to call them, at Dr. Marin's office are officially and completely incompetent. I am personally going to try and get Dr. Marin to read his Yelp reviews and get a message to him (if I can get an appt to see him this year) that these ladies are crazy retarded. I just tried to get some help over the phone to get my prescription refilled because he only refilled it for 3 months. She was absolutely no help, very rude over the phone, and seemed like she wanted to hang up on me. As others have said, Dr. Marin is good and a nice guy. He does seem a bit uninterested at times but I think that's his personality. He's not super touchy feely but I like that. However, I have decided to change doctors. I no longer live in the city and nearly as important, the recepcionist is unbareable to deal with. She very friendly in person but on the phone she is rude, condensending and argumentative. I prefer my medical lectures at least come from a Dr. or nurse. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Marin for 5 years. Dr. Marin is a great doctor and always very efficient and effective at dealing with whatever my medical issue seems to be. The front desk is fine, not spectacular, but not nearly as bad as the rest of these reviews. I'm usually able to get into the office promptly, although not very often the day-of -- but that just means he is a popular doctor with a full schedule. If I can't see Dr. marin, I can usually get in to see Kay, who is great as well. I give Dr. Marin high marks and would recommend to anyone in search of a new PCP. read more

I can't believe there are bad reviews for Mark Marin's office. I have been a patient for over 6 years. Some complain that they can't get a same-day appointment. I have yet to see a doctor's office where you can. I have gotten some same day appointments, but usually the next day. And, as far as the speed of getting in, I would say his office is better than most, in my experience over the last 20 years of various doctors. And, the front desk people have always been so nice and pleasant, I have had no trouble with them at all. They are always very polite and very nice on the phone. Not sure why some others have had problems with them. Maybe it's them. And, yes, Kay Kugler is great. Overall, I give a high rating to Mark Marin's office. read more

I have been a patient of Dr Marin and Kay (Phys Asst) for well over 10 years and thanks to having relatively good health, have not had to see them all that often. What prompts me to write this review is I just had a full annual physical and what was great about it was that Dr Marin takes as much time as I need to tell him about whatever concerns I have about how I'm feeling and what I hear in the press about what is now good for me. He is current with all the studies about cardio and cancer (my main concerns) and once the actual exam begins, he explains what and why he is doing something. I have had to go in for various minor issues (strep throat, nasal infection, etc) and have gotten in to see mostly Kay within 24 hours and often within a few hours if I really needed to (so as I read some reviews that are counter to my comment, I am of course surprised). Bottom line, Dr Marin is a small business owner and that enables me to see him or Kay when I need to, I know I won't get one of a dozen Drs in a big partnership, I'll get one of them. They may have a glitch about scheduling every now and then (although I've never experienced it in 10+ years) but they both are great heatlth care professionals who give the very best care. I have recommended Dr Marin to several friends and family and have frankly never heard about anything negative. Bottom line, great location, smart well educated Dr, personal service. read more

Dr Marin is great. Sadly, his front desk doesn't return calls, they don't usually answer the telephone, and you have to book months in advance for a annual physical (very tough to do when they don't answer the phone and don't return calls). People here really aren't exagerating that their office is very challenging to work with. It must not be hurting business because it never changes -- and this is great for them. Right now I have no choice but to go elsewhere because I cannot wait 3 months for an annual physical (it took one unreturned message and 5 additional tries to get them on the phone to finally discover this wait which is how I got into this position in the first place). I hope someday I can come back here (it will be when waiting 3 months for a physical is an option) because Dr. Marin himself is truly fantastic in all regards. (Note: In an urgent situation 3 years ago he was able to accommodate seeing me at last minute notice so it does happen and I really did appreciate it). read more

I have never seen Dr Marin and maybe that is why I am considering moving to another practice. The office staff comes across as harrassed and annoyed whenever a patient makes a request and it seems that their creature comforts and conveinences are the primary concern and not the patient's comfort or safety. I saw the Nurse Practicioner and when I was shown into the exam room they told me to undress and gave me the equivalent of a dinner napkin to cover myself. No gown or sheet. I sat there for nearly 20 minutes before the NP came in and she proceeded to have a 45 minute exam conversation with me before actually examing me. When I commented about the lack of (ahem) coverage and that it was cold, she exclaimed "Oh but it so conveinent this way". No it is not and it is uncomfortable. I asked for a co-pay receipt to submit to my flex plan and was told that I would have to wait until the end of the year and they would give me one receipt - because it was how they did things. I asked if I could wait until the end of the year to pay my portion and was told no. So I said it would not work for me; their easier way. Again the annoyed harrassed attitude. The nearest lab to their office is near Union Square and not an easy commute for me. The closest mammogram service is at UCSF. If you do not live in SF or drive it sucks. Called today and asked to have the NP call me. I was calling from work and did not want to elaborate given the lack of privacy and was basically told that if I wanted a return call then I would have to "give details, because that is how Kay (the NP) likes it". The details were in case thye needed to pull my chart. Uh ladies you are required to pull my chart for any type of return phone call. Tacky Operation in my opinion. read more
