Run, don't walk to this program! Michelle Joy is absolutely amazing, and being new to therapy, this was the perfect program. It is about 60% her "teaching" which is great context, and 40% us talking through examples and putting the concepts into practice. My fiancee and I improved our communication a ton, and we have referenced Michelle's "workbook" we filled out when we were resolving tough conflicts planning a wedding in the crazy Covid era. My husband and I took this class 2.5 years ago in February 2017 and it has served us well to this day...so yeah, I'm pretty late on this review. ;) Michelle and Dan were fabulous facilitators, with just the right amount of content, discussions, group time, 1:1 couple time, and breaks. The Fort Mason Center is gorgeous and having the workshop there felt like taking a little break away from our busy lives. At the time of the workshop, we were not engaged but had been together for 6+ years and knew it was in our near future. Marriage Prep 101 helped us see that we were on the same page (even more than we thought) and hold mostly the same goals, values, and dreams for the future. After taking the workshop and experiencing some newfound clarity, we decided to get engaged that April, travel abroad together for a year, and get married in front of our friends and families upon our return. We appreciated the opportunity to work through our relationship vision and receive tools for listening better to each other and being solid teammates. There is a lot of foundation in Gottman method (famous relationship scientists at the University of Washington), so look them up and see if it might resonate with you and your partner. My Fiancee and I wanted to make sure we were as aligned as we could be before getting married so we started to look for any sort of marriage counseling that would be helpful. I was recommended Marriage Prep 101 by my aunt who is a psychologist. Our class was online and private and we opted to do 2x 3.5 hour sessions on Sat/Sun. We received a workbook which was used during the sessions together. We really enjoyed working with Michelle, she guided us really well through some top topics and gave us a lot of tools on how to work through barriers and miscommunications together. I would highly recommend this class for anyone who is looking to get married, this isn't a magical class that fixes all your problems, instead it's about setting yourselves up for success by learning more about yourselves as a couple. Regardless of whether you think your relationship is great or has challenges, this workshop is a great way to get tools, frame ideas and push oneself to look inward and outward to strengthen your relationship. It's a safe, comfortable and judgement-free environment to have raw conversations or reaffirm ones you've had. My fiance and I took Michelle's Marriage Prep 101 class when we got engaged as a way to improve our foundational skills for marriage. Michelle's 7 hour course was guided by a 50+ page interactive workbook that she sent ahead of time, which covered topics like conflict resolution and compatibility. I was skeptical about the workbook at first but I'm actually grateful to have a resource to refer back to on the strategies we covered. We spent a bulk of the time in the class discussing the exercises in the workbook and simulating real discussions that we will likely have later on in our marriage. Michelle was a great facilitator for these discussions; she drew on her 20+ years as a couples counselor and provided some amazing suggestions for new behaviors we can try that we immediately employed. I'm grateful we took this class and highly recommend it to young newly-engaged couples. read more

My husband and I took this class several months before our wedding and highly recommend it to the engaged, almost engaged, or recently married. The class and the strategies it teaches are research-based and non-religious. The teaching couple is genuine and hilarious, as well as highly qualified: they're both psychologists and they're a happily married couple, having worked hard to build the marriage they want. I appreciated that this class had us take a "Relate" survey/questionnaire that compared my point of view and my husband's point of view on a long list of topics: communication, conflict, family models of relationship, priorities, children, religion, money, etc. It was a good way to highlight where our perspectives were somewhat different so that we could understand that and communicate effectively about it. Much of the class consists of communication and conflict-resolution type strategies and exercises. Probably most adults need these skills, married or not, but especially so if you want to actually live your life with someone. Students aren't forced to share with other students, so don't worry about being put on the spot in front of the group. Our class was at Fort Mason, easily accessible by public transit and with abundant parking. They served us food from Green's to go, provided useful workbooks and articles, and answered all manner of questions with professionalism, humor, non-judgment, and insight. Students were of many ages and backgrounds (religious, cultural, economic, geographic, etc.). I don't remember any gay couples in our class, but I think they'd be welcome. The Marriage Prep 101 website has a lot of useful information, and just got re-vamped for a friendlier and more aesthetically-pleasing interface than the site used to be. The class was very worthwhile and we wish that everyone wanted to take a class like this one and could do so. read more

Wonderful course and highly recommend it to anyone. My fiancee and I have been using what we learned in the class right off the bat, and it's been a real lifesaver in the high tension of wedding planning. The instructors are super nice and make you feel right at home. Their personal anecdotes give context to the subjects that they are trying to convey. I found a lot of them matched a "Managing for Development" class that I took at my work, with the difference that you can't fire your spouse (well, I guess you could, but let's not go there...). Couple things to help you set your expectations a bit. The class in Friday evening and Saturday all day. I would have preferred slightly shorter sessions on both Saturday and Sunday, but that's how they have it set up. Saturday is a bit overwhelming in comparison because the bulk of the class takes place there. Also, there isn't a ton of one-on-one session time, it's a group class after all, UNLESS you have them come over and talk to you during one of the breakout sessions. My fiancee and I didn't take them up on this, and maybe we should have. Be sure to try and reach out to other couples during the lunch session, we did, and it was one of our favorite parts of the class. We learned that we aren't the only ones having certain issues planning our wedding, and it was nice to commune with others in the same (or different) situations. Pro tip: For the Friday session, check if "Off the Grid" is going to be at Fort Mason Center (if that is where the class is scheduled). You can get dinner from an amazing food truck before heading into the class. We had dinner downtown and were bummed that we missed out. read more

My wife and I attended this workshop as a result of the Yelp reviews. They're not lying! I found the workshop to be: ENTERTAINING: Mr. and Mrs. Gannon teach the course just as they are...very married. It's as entertaining as it is educational to see their interaction as they drop the walls of the psychotherapist to give us real life examples of their functional (and sometimes nonfunctional) relationship. WELL-STRUCTURED: Unlike other workshops you might attend for work, when we break for small groups, it's with your spouse or betrothed. Therefore, you're deep in discussion immediately. If anything, it's tough for them to pull people back to the instructional parts of the workshop, which they do with grace and efficiency. We covered everything they outlines, although there is plenty of homework, too, to keep moving in the right direction. CONFIDENTIAL: Also, it's private. You're so involved with your partner that you hear NOTHING the other couples say. The topics they touch on are approached from a social-scientific perspective, backed by research and documentation. PRACTICAL AND APPLICABLE: We use the tools they showed us. I take timeouts. We sometimes play listening games. The conflict resolution elements have been most helpful. Learning how to structure a household, identify incompatibilities vs. differences, and languages of love have been indispensable. SECULAR: While they were sensitive to religious concerns, they left their participants' religions to the privacy of the couple breakout sessions, sticking to psychological studies and their own experiences for workshop material. I particularly appreciated this approach. WORTH IT: The class brings up topics that you might not otherwise discuss until crisis mode, when you're least likely to be able to hear your partner. This alone is worth the money. If you'll spend 10k on a stupid sparkly rock, $400 to learn to work together in your marriage is nothing. Compared with the cost of divorce...pony up. We're not the first to get married, and we don't have to figure it ALL out through trial and error. Good luck! (this is an example of where more stars would be useful) read more

My fiance thought I was dragging him to a Mormon marriage class since the "Relate" test we took before the class was produced by BYU. Much to his relief (since we're both not religious), it was completely secular. My fiance and were in the instructors' 60th class, and found it very helpful. I second everything the first reviewer said -- the couple leading the class are hilarious, with great stories and an approachable style. After hearing about an experience a friend had with a class taught by another organization (which drew participants into the drama of other participants' lives), I really appreciated that the class was focused on the individual relationship you have with your significant other. Even the food they provided was great -- desserts Friday evening, bagels Saturday morning, and yummy food from Green's restaurant and sandwiches from another place that were all good. With all the wedding planning that goes on, it made sense to us to plan for the marriage as well as the wedding day itself. I've recommended to several friends that they take this class -- some are engaged already and others are living together but not yet engaged. I'd think it'd be worth it either way. read more

My fiance and I took this course and absolutely loved it!It provides a neutral setting to talk about challenging issues in the relationship and focus on the resolution.You also get to reflect on many of your strengths as well.I found the instructors to be knowledgeable and real.They do not preach about how a marriage should work in theory, they talk about the tools we can all use to make a marriage work in practice.I would recommend this course to anyone getting married.In fact my fiance and I plan to attend the course every five years. I really appreciated the workshop, EVERYONE should have to do this before they get married. There is something for couples in all different phases to get out of this, so before you think you don't have time there's no reason, think twice. They've done over 140 of these workshops and they have a skills based vs a faith based approach. No matter if you've been together 5 years like my fiance and I have, 2 or 10yrs - it seemed all the couples were working through useful topics about resolving conflict, family origin/influence, finances, communications and expectations. Tim and I walked out feeling very validated about our upcoming marriage and made some decisions about how we can improve our conflict resolution and how we want to manage our finances. This was a great class and I highly recommend it to couples - especially if they are engaged. I would echo Phuong T.'s review. The class reaffirmed a lot of strengths in our relationship (even our expectations questionnaires matched up!) and gave me good space to discuss my conflict response tendencies. I think the tools that the Gannons give for working through conflict are great - especially to discuss the process, take 20 min time outs, put your issues on a 1 to 10 scale. While my fiancé and I don't really have conflicts - and can work through small issues well - these tools will be very helpful when a serious conflict arises. Patrick and Michelle were available during the exercise sessions to meet with us as a couple or individually to discuss any relationship issue. They also were happy to pass along additional resources after the class (e.g. for stepfamilies). I liked the personal anecdotes and research data that they shared. read more

Attended a workshop at the recommendation of newlywed friends. It was a wonderful experience and very helpful. It's long enough to be worth the price and short enough so as not to be overwhelming. It's very active (but really only with your partner - you certainly don't have to open up about your relationship to strangers or anything like that even though it is a group class), so I never felt bored or tuned out. It gave us a lot of tools and reaffirmed many of the strengths in our relationship. read more

I highly recommend this course to anyone in a serious relationship whether it be long term, engaged, or even already married. As a matter of fact, I wish I had discovered it long ago! This workshop has many strengths, but to name a few: VERY PRACTICAL, strengths focused, and a great introduction to conflict resolution skills. I thought they put a balanced energy in strength, conflict, and goal identification. The instructors use humor (they're real, not hoaky) to help illustrate theory/demonstrate excercises, present science based research in an enlightening way (much to my relief-I left the lectures behind in college), and gave us the opportunity to practice everyday skills in the workshop. . They made themselves available for private questions- overall guidance to everyone throughout the duration of the workshop for all excercises. To conclude: The fiance was surprisingly impressed. My now-husband and I completed the course this past spring in San Francisco. We've since moved across the country but have taken what Michelle and Patrick taught us along with. Their techniques for conflict resolution and communication are great and have helped us be better partners for one another. The class also brought up some great conversations that we'd never had surrounding our family of origin. Both of us made connections in the class regarding how we each operate as individuals and how our family of origin inspires some of our actions and reactions. Good stuff. And doing the marriage bond was a really, well, "bonding" experience! We put parts of our bond into our marriage ceremony, which really helped "seal" our union even more. My fiance and I took Michelle and Dan's Marriage Prep 101 class recently. We picked this particular class because of the good reviews. After the first night, we knew we were in trouble. The class is split into 2 days, night one being 3 hours and the next day being 7 hours. The class did start with a brief intro of your name and where you live. Shortly after that, the whole class (8 couples, one of which dropped out after the first night) shared a special story about their partner. It would have been nice to hear how long other couples had been together, when they were getting married, what they do for a living etc. The venue was really nice, Fort Mason right on the water. There were a ton of distractions like the old building creaking, seagulls, people outside, boats etc. Instead of just closing the window, Michelle would just start talking louder and and louder like we didn't hear the bellowing fog horn. It was very funny. The structure of the class was basically this: Michelle and Dan read from the booklet they wrote, give us an exercise and they would go sit in the corner. Perhaps they felt like they would be intruding by walking around and chiming in, but they felt inaccessible. For such a small class, we didn't get a any one-on-one (I guess two-on-two) time with them. We did a lot of writing, but we didn't have a desk or table to write on making it a little more difficult then it needed to be. We spent a little bit of time talking about non-verbal communication. It was incredibly ironic because Michelle and Dan spent half the class reading, word for word, from the booklet they made! They stood in front of us, with their heads down in a book that they wrote and hadn't memorized! There were some topics that hey kept referring to, like the acronym A.R.E., but they didn't memorize what it stood for! Every time they referenced it, they had to read it! If it's so important, how could they not memorize it?!? Additionally, whenever Dan would talk, Michelle would turn, face him, and stare at him. Hard. It was unsettling. The information was helpful and it was nice to talk with my fiance about some of the stuff covered. If the class was going to be Dan and Michelle reading from the book (which had a lot of typos), break for an exercise, and repeat, then we might as well have just do it from home through a streaming link. They were nice and seemed to care, but they need to be less wooden and have more energy. read more

We attended a Marriage Prep 101 Workshop based on reviews and our friends recommendations. It was stellar! We wanted to learn tools to be successful in our relationship and anything else we should be made aware of going into marriage, and we got that along with a clear blueprint about who we each are more deeply and how to better support eachother. There are tons of guided exercises to do together, each one with a useful purpose and music to represent each theme to keep it fun. Help from the presenters was optional, but we took them up on it and we're glad we did! It's included in the price so why not. Being led by a couple made the material accessible to both men and women. Dan and Michelle are hilarious, making it fun with games and activities, sharing real life examples from their marriage to drive important points home, while focusing on strengths and normalizing everything else. The 10 hours flew by. Skits, musings and studies (research) presented allowed us to identify our problem areas and how to come up with creative solutions.  We also were glad we were never put on the spot. A super fun and helpful weekend and I can't recommend it highly enough to all couples. read more

We spend so much time planning a wedding and sometimes forget that the whole point is that it's really about a marriage. Spending $400 and ten hours planning for our marriage in this workshop was a great investment. I realize that I'm in the minority here, but my husband and I had a vastly different experience with Marriage Prep 101. Perhaps this is because we have both been in therapy and are familiar with basic communication strategies. We were quite disappointed in the caliber of this workshop. Additionally, there is a very frightening aspect of control to the leaders' relationship. Normally I would not wish to disparage the marriage of others in a public forum. However, because they use themselves as an example of good communication and partnership, I think it should be noted that in each story they told, she was always the one to change for him. Overall, if you've been in therapy or have attended personal growth workshops, I think you will want your money and your weekend back. read more

My fiance and I did Marriage Prep 101 a few weeks ago and thought it was definitely worth it. While the class didn't goo too deeply into any of the subjects discussed, it helped start conversations we might not have otherwise have had. While the Gannons use a lot of examples from their own relationship, which gives the class more color, most of the information the present is research-based. The only thing I would change if I could is the length of the class. I'd prefer it be Saturday-Sunday instead of Friday night-Saturday, and it'd be even better if it was more than two sessions, going deeper into some of the topics discussed. Either way, I'd recommend it to any serious couples wanting to build a long-lasting relationship. read more

Honestly, I would place this class as being the most important wedding expense we've spent money on, even above the marriage certificate. I mean, really, what good would it do to get married if you don't prepare for it? Some context! My fiance and I have a really happy, solid relationship, but I wouldn't say that our relationship has been really challenged yet (perhaps related to the fact that we do not yet live together). But the challenges will inevitably come! So what's a couple to do? We definitely wanted to do some premarital preparation but were not religious enough to be interested in the Engaged Encounters/Pre-Cana classes required by the Catholic Church. We also didn't want to go through the potentially expensive process of couples counseling if we didn't have specific issues we wanted to work on. The workshop format was the perfect solution. I'd say it was secular (but not anti-religious... they're pretty respectful) and could be a good option for couples with different religious backgrounds. For $420 for 10 hours (split between Friday night and Saturday), that makes it a pretty cost-effective option over couples counseling as well. The cost also covered a light breakfast, lunch, snacks, and a workbook for each person, and I'm a fan of swag in general. The class would be a great jumping point into couples counseling, too, if you have more complex needs to work on. Also note: they recommend that couples take the Relate test ($40 per couple), and it's optional. The test can be very helpful as a tool, but be careful about interpreting the results. I still think it's worth taking anyway. I think Jeff M's review is pretty comprehensive and accurate to our experience of this class, so I'll just add to that: - The Gannons use a lot of their own personal anecdotes that were relatable, entertaining, and memorable. This was especially helpful for when we went over some of the communication exercises, and seeing them demo the techniques using their own stories made it more accessible and easy to do ourselves. - I liked that they included a section on how we think of family backgrounds and their potential impact on our own marriages. It helped to think about how our parents' marriages could influence our own views and even made me think of how I would want our future kids to view our marriage. - The class opened up some topics we hadn't thought about discussing before and gave us a good space to talk about it privately and productively. I think it could be helpful to come to this workshop with an idea of some non-dealbreaker issues to talk about. - You don't have to be engaged to take this class. A few couples were already married, and a few had kids, but at least one couple was not engaged. I would recommend this class to any couple in a long-term relationship. - You also get out of the workshop whatever you put in. You don't have to participate in the larger group discussions, but definitely come ready with an open mind and a readiness to do the work, and you'll be rewarded. At the end of the workshop, my fiance and I definitely bonded more and feel a lot more strengthened in our already-great relationship. Gifting this class would be great for couples! read more

Dan and Michelle are great. They really helped my fiance and I deepen our relationship and get to the root of what our challenges are as a couple. I also really appreciated that all of the models and tools they utilize are based on science and psychology. Interestingly enough, three of the five couples in our workshop travelled from out of town to attend the workshop (one even from out of state) because they couldn't find something similar closer to them. Marriage Prep 101 was a great class and I would recommend it to anyone planning to get married. We had about 20 couples in our class and everyone, even all of the guys, were very happy they attended. What I liked best about the class was that the Gannon's are a couple who have been married for over 10 years and have two young boys. They actually have the experience to be leading a class like this. They also make you feel very comfortable with all the issues that are discussed in the class. The stories they tell about how they have gotten through tough times are invaluable. Marraige Prep 101 was probably the best investment we spent through the whole wedding planning process. read more

This is a very general course covering many basics: communication, conflict resolution, sex, etc. The instructors are very candid and share much about their own relationship. Although I did learn a few things and overall enjoyed the seminar, I would have liked more in-depth discussion and practice of some of the techniques introduced.
