Before I attended I thought the place was a church 'cause the building you see as you look down the street (Belmore Street?) looked like a church building. In the days before children were in danger, we used to walk miles to school. Through wind and hail and driving snowstorms we trecked, without shoes. It was tough back then, and kids nowadays don't know how good they have it. [OK it was about a mile and it doesn't rain much in Sydney except for sometimes in winter]. This institution has a lot to answer for ..... Just kidding!!! There were actually no problems or scandals or anything like that. Next door was the NSW Department of Education, so they probably made efforts to keep everyone in line and educate the kids like they are supposed to in the days before school administrators began believing it was all about them. The most shocking thing I remember is that one of my teachers grew up in the bush and confessed she had a pet kangaroo, and you are not supposed to do that. Shock, horror. I believe the trauma from it all is still with me to this day.

They focus on having fun and being positive with your education. They have been helping me with my maths and my teachers have noted a great improvement in my attitude and topic results! They are quite cheap and run individual or group lessons, as well as homework helper sessions and even fine motor, and writing and social skills for the younger kids.

Saying that this doesn't happen often. The painting happens outside under the trees and beside the play equipment. They have a whole heap of other creative activities for the kids from collage puzzles and play dough, a water and sand play area, singing and musicreading time, dramatic play and fine motor skills activities. Kids between 0 and 5 are invited to join in. My daughter was nine months old when we started and though she can't do a lot of the activities she seems to enjoy being around the older kids and clapping at sing time. There is a room with toys and cushions for the little ones to roll around in. If you have one or more children over 18 months it costs $10.00 and if your little one is under 18 months the cost is $5. Each extra child is $2.50. It's only open during the school term between Monday and Thursday from 10am -12.30pm. When you get there ask someone where the sign in sheet and tin to pay is - it works on a trust system so you need to remember to put your contribution in before you leave.

I can read a book (guilt free), keep an eye on my son (who three so pretty self-sufficient) and know that he's having a ball. A few of my friends think that it's a bit cliquey, whilst I don't find it so, I can see that it'd be a different experience if I went there with a younger child looking for friendship. There are some pretty established groupings going on, which appear to be a bit hard to penetrate. The fact that it's spread out over so many activities makes it tricky for adults to get a good conversation flowing...but that's always an issue with kids...however little people love it. The families that attend are on the whole pretty good but can sometimes be a bit lax in policing the bigger kids who career down the slope in run-along-cars - that from the mother of a bigger kid too! If you park in the council carpark next door, Corinne can validate your parking to get a discount (do it when you pay in the first door to the left as you enter). Watch out for the team from James Place Cafe who come around at 11am to take coffee orders.

There's two things that make me feel like a young schoolboy again - cricket nets, and getting hit…read morewith a cane by an old man in suspenders. After joining a local cricket club (aptly named The Dregs), we've been training mid-week at the nets at North Sydney Boys High School - after the kids have cleared out for the day, of course. Net hire is a pittance, and while there's only two nets the astroturf is in good condition and the nets are as wide as the day is long, allowing batsmen to open the shoulders up and go for full-blooded shots. Hell, you can dance down the wicket and try and loft one out of the nets and onto the roof of the gymnasium if you like, although you'll have to pick the hole in roof of the chain-link fencing which is tougher than you might imagine. And while you're slinging down a bit of chin music you can laugh at the dudes playing tennis AKA suckball on the concrete courts next to you. Pfft, losers.
