This Single Span Burr Arch Truss was built by J.A. Britton in 1917 to carry what is now County Road 800N across Rush Creek. Access is easy via the paved surface of County Road 450N, which is just to the west. #29 on the Parke County Covered Bridge Map, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. In Covered Bridges Today, Brenda Krekeler rather enigmatically writes that "the bridge offers its best appearance when the leaves are gone" (p. 86). Absolutely! For those who are adventurous and don't mind getting their vehicle dirty from traveling on gravel roads, Marshall Covered Bridge is one of the stops along the "Yellow" Route of the Parke County trails. It is located about 6 miles due west of Turkey Run State Park, but there is no direct route to get to the bridge. Built in 1917, this bridge is one of the smaller ones in the county measuring only 72' in length and spanning only 55' over Rush Creek. It has the standard Burr Arch-truss style framing and the red & white coloring with black letters that most Parke County covered bridges have. The bridge is open to traffic without any specific pull over spot, so please use caution when stopping on the road for photos and be aware of oncoming traffic if you venture into the bridge. The best directions I can give with decent roads to travel from Turkey Run are to head west to US 41, then north north about 3.25 miles to 1050 N. Head west 4.5 miles through Sylvania and Tangier to 425W. The road jogs west at 900N to become 450W. Follow that south another mile to 800N and head east to the bridge.
