[Part of Giving Tuesday 2019] I can only write from the perspective of a volunteer/donor, but Martha's Table seems to have a strong mission towards helping children and families in the DC area. Our class wanted to organize a clothing/food drive, and Martha's Table seemed to have the most bang for your buck. You can always donate in liquid like every other organization, but not as feasible for someone on the student lifestyle. There's plenty of drop-off locations for clothing and baby items across the city. If you can give food items like canned and dried goods, you gotta go to their Maycroft location on Columbia Rd NW. Easy to just reserve a 15-minute appointment on their website and drop off our load. I see their trucks all around the city serving the community - here's to hoping everyone's littles go a long way. read more

I had a great experience volunteering at Martha's Table! My group and I volunteered with Martha's Table's McKenna's Wagon Helper. Upon arrival, volunteers waited around the table until everyone was there. We then split up into two groups that went into two vans. Each van had a driver - the volunteers are the default drivers, and we also had someone from Martha's Table with us as well to guide us the spot that we would set up for dinner service. When we got to our location, we had to act swiftly and set up for people from the community who were already waiting for us. We set up a cordon to protect the line from traffic, the tables for the food trays, and a water table. We served both hot food and sandwiches. Martha's Table asks no questions and serves food to whoever needs it. When we ran out of food, we packed up and drove back to Martha's Table. We then brought all the empty containers back into the building, which was the last thing we did on our shift. I look forward to future opportunities helping out at Martha's Table. Been to this Martha's Table once. It's in a row of other Martha's Table offices so be sure to check the name on the sign! Clothing 3/5: they have a mix of men's and women's clothes. The selection was pretty small and skewed business, but everything was in decent shape. Blazers, skirts, dresses, heels. No specific brands - some lower end designer and some mall brands. Price 5/5: you can't beat the prices if you find something you like. I've shared a picture of the prices from 2017. Service 4/5: one very nice and helpful gentleman. But the other staff didn't seem very helpful and were a bit slow in ringing up orders. Also as clothes fell on the ground no one picked them up, except the customers. read more

My Martha's Table volunteer experience was so wonderful that I've already signed up for my second shift! From start to finish, my four hour shift was smooth and seamless. 1. Registration - Their calendar is easy to read and has well-written descriptions of every type of shifts available. Sign up was easy and painless and they sent me an automatic reminder the day of the shift. 2. Signing In - Taj the volunteer coordinator took the time to welcome me and explain the Martha's Table story and what I would be doing that afternoon. He was funny, helpful and very warm. Even though it was my first day volunteering, I already felt like I was part of the team! 3. The Actual Nitty Gritty - I worked in their Lobby Market which is basically the food pantry based out of their headquarters. It was stocked with canned meat, vegetables, pasta, cereal, rice, milk, orange juice, and lots of fresh veggies that included collard greens, apples, bananas, cabbage, sweet potatoes and more. My job was to take in customers and help them sort through the groceries and make sure that everything was weighed and counted properly. It was like being a grocery store clerk except no money was exchanged. I met all types of people that afternoon. Young and old and every age in between, American or not, single, families, students, etc. My brief stint was a real eye opener that just a block away from all of the bars and restaurants and bars of the 14th Street Corridor are people who need access to fresh and healthy food. On a side note, as someone who loves the aesthetics, I was really happy to see that they arranged the fresh produce is pretty baskets and made sure to keep the pantry clean and happy looking as possible. As one other volunteer said half jokingly, we want them to have the total experience. When things got slow, I was pulled into the kitchen to help bake fresh muffins to go out with their food deliveries. I never felt like I was not useful. 4. The Aftermath - I've signed up for my second shift and already looking for other ways I can help! read more

I had a great time volunteering here with my school group. We helped with meal prep in the kitchen and from start to finish it was organized and well run. I arrived a bit early and was put to work untangling aprons for other volunteers. Once everyone was there, it took a bit for us to get started. Our leader walked us through his vision and inspiration for the meal, and then showed all of us how to cut each of the vegetables. Perhaps this was easiest for him, but only one person was cutting each type of vegetable, and I didn't even end up cutting vegetables, so it didn't prove useful for me. About 40 minutes in we actually got started working. I was a stew stirrer, and basically stirred a giant thing of stew for about an hour. While I stirred, the various veggies were added as were a bunch of spices. After the stew was done, we all worked together to package up the stew and previously cooked rice into containers to go out on trucks for dinner around the city. As we cooked, we also cleaned, which I liked because it meant at the end we basically got to say our good byes and there wasn't much more clean up to do. Something else that I liked is that they had small individual lockers with locks on them for you to put your belongings in. Overall I had a great time and will definitely volunteer with them again. They are planning on moving locations soon though, so likely this was my last opportunity to volunteer at this location. read more

Don't donate here. While I admit that Martha's Table is a good cause (supporting the homeless and destitute of DC), the women who run the Martha's Table Outfitters are crude, horrible people. I used to live in Columbia Heights and would shop there. They at times have amazing finds and offer you Michael Stars or BCBG clothing (at a cost mind you... if they know it's name brand they'll jack up the price to $20 buck for a GAP used coat). Okay, yay. Stars for them for having rich donors to stock their store. But EVERY SINGLE TIME I would go there I would hear this women scream at not only the poor patrons coming in but those bringing donations in as well. "This is crap!" that manager would scream after the donors had departed. "There's no name brand clothing in here" is another common phrase. I've even seen her turn down a homeless man who came in with his shelter ticket. He brought the shelter ticket in asking for a coat. The only coat that fit him with some "designer" jacket so the manager wouldn't give it to him. He had to pick something that was obviously ill-fitting. The final straw came when I saw the manager RIP UP a person's donation sheet b/c she thought they put down too much money as to its value. What the hell! These people are giving you donations to "help" those in need and you spit in their face? I should report this place to the IRS or DC council so they lose their funding since they clearly must be violating some sort of code of conduct. If not legally at least morally. There are other organizations that need clothing (St Elizabeth's house, pregnancy crisis center, little sisters of the poor, etc) who will happily take your items and actually use them for a good cause. read more

I don't care much for D.C. I feel like Goldilocks when I'm there. It's either too cold or too hot (except those few months when it's just right). I don't have the patience for that. I also think that the people are hella rude (residence, servers, bus drivers, cops, tourists, etc). With that said, one of my favorite places there is Martha's Table. This is a place to shop where you don't have to feel unethical. The shop isn't huge, but everything is laid out quite well. They have really good selections for a thrift shop. I got CDs. Like not crap (depending on your music taste, I guess). And it was diverse. Everything from (old school) Genesis to Jurassic 5. I got blazers. They must have lots of wide shouldered 5'8" frat boys making mad donations. I got dishes. A whole set of matching black plates, saucers, and a matching bowl. I got a basket. Just to carry the dishes on METRO though. No other reason for a basket. And everything cost what one nice shirt would have cost at Nautica. And, the people we're actually quite nice (and hilarious). One little girl there with her mother had her America's Got Talent chops on display (adorable, and I don't really like kids that much). One homeless guy told a store worker that he wasn't an idiot and he had an IQ of 185. One worker ran after us down the street (like a block and a half) because we mistakenly left some of our CDs at the store. That's customer service. Go there. read more

I shyed away from this place at first . When I moved to DC I was on the hunt for good thrift stores - and as usually, started with Yelp. Martha's outfitters didn't have very good reviews, so I didn't stop their on my thrifting extravaganza's. However, after a move and being now a mere 4 blocks from it, curiousity got the best of me, and I went in...and haven't stopped! This Thrift Store is great. The people who run it are amazing - incredibly helpful, pleasant, chatty, I could go on and on. The prices are extremely fair. Having both namebrands and good vintage finds - it truly has become my new obsession. They filter in new items very frequently, so if I don't find something one week, I just check back a bit later, and there are a plethora of new options to go through. I've also started the upcycling trend, whipping out my grandma's sewing machine handed down to me, and Martha's has lots of great vintage finds that need just a bit of loving to make it really trendy and upbeat again. You won't see me at H&M, F21, Banana, etc anymore, but you will see me all smiles grabbing loads of stuff from this store. So, my suggestion, is to ignore some of the older reviews, as I understand it was under different management, and come and check it out. Weekends are obviously a bit busier, but it's still very pleasant to be in. One of my favorite thrift spots - and I love knowing that what I spend is helping others in the process. I highly recommend volunteering at this establishment. The staff: Ok, you might come across one or two people that are grumpy but for the most part, the volunteer coordinator is awesome. She is always helpful and is willing to through me on the volunteer schedule whenever possible. I usually do food preparation when I do go, but today was something different. They offer a van that goes out in the community every day of the week to distribute food to people in need. It was the best feeling I had in a long time. Safety is the number one priority of the staff and they enforce it, not only for you, but for others as well. Call immediately and schedule some volunteer time. Its great for groups. read more

Dresses, shirts, pants are all just under $4, and I don't think I saw anything over $10 Racks are well organized and not too crowded Staff are nice Cons: Pretty small selection Items not always in great shape - stains on some of the clothes and I picked up a champagne flute only to put it down when I realized there was a chip on the bottom No dressing room just a mirror in the back but they do have a limited return/exchange policy for clothes I'd probably only stop in to browse if I happened to be nearby and would focus more on their dishes etc than their clothes. I stopped in yesterday after reading the reviews and always hunting for a good deal. I know that from past experience with thrift stores that the items vary daily and it can be hit or miss depending on the day. Today was unfortunately a miss for me, but that's okay, I will definitely give it another try! There were other people who were finding items so that's a good thing. I like the color coding system. I will say, there was that normal thrift store smell, they should think about trying wall flowers or something to help with the smell. Employees seemed nice and I could see the employees on the other side going through donations! I hope they received some good items that I can go through and purchase the next time I stop in! read more

Dropped off clothes to donate today for the first time. So easy, there is a clearly marked spot right by the door to do so along with forms if you want a receipt for your taxes. I recently moved to D.C. a week ago. I had been traveling here for over a year and was familiar with a lot of the District's consignment shops. Had never heard of Martha's Table in all that time. It was a very happy discovery. And at a crucial time. I ended up in D.C. without access to a lot of my clothes. I started to shell out $$$ to replace them and quickly became depleted. On top of all the expenses of the recent move, I simply couldn't replace tons of clothes full price or even on sale. The selection at Martha's Table made me quite happy and the prices made me grin. Cashmere sweaters in great condition for 4.00 ? Wow. I struck up a conversation with the store's Director Michael and he informed me of all the good the proceeds of sales in the store go to. I mentioned Yelp and disclosed to him that I almost didn't want to share this new found gem with everybody. But he convinced me that it's win win. The more people who know of the store, the more high quality donations they will get. So go see for yourself. Your wallet will thank you. :) read more

After a few successful trips to Martha's Outfitters, I've sworn off H&M and the rest. Why buy expensive new clothes when I can get Banana/J. Crew/Brooks Bros/Ann Taylor/etc for $1-4 here?! I volunteered here about 8 years ago. It was nice back then but I believe it may have gotten even better now. As far as donations go, they made it incredibly easy and stress-free. They were also super friendly. I've found some great name brands at the thrift store and the prices are almost too good to be true. I happened to walk in the other day and found a J. Crew dress in my size for $4. Score! A lot of great stuff to be found here. I also like the free books they have outside. read more

I like the fact that this is a locally owned and operated thrift store that directly benefits the neighborhood. While it is small and usually crowded with people and clothes, I've always managed to find a few things. They must have a special arrangement with Crate & Barel because there are always brand new home decor items there, including full china sets from the store. read more

This place is great. The staff is great. Really friendly. They have a small, but good, library here and books are really cheap. I was in a bind and needed a pair of dress pants. Got them here for maybe $2. Biggest downside, no dressing room. They have an exchange policy, but it would help to be able to try stuff on. They have men's suits for just a few dollars. I did not get one, but I saw Brooks Brothers and whatnot, perusing the aisles. read more

Easily one of my favorite secondhand stores in the District, and even more so for their awesome community mission. Strikes a great balance in selection and price - it's super cheap and doesn't require much searching to unearth some treasures. I've found some killer thrift at Martha's Table - great for blazers and coats especially. The housewares are also lovely; I've scored vases, pretty dishes and more there. PS - Saw in another review that they charge you $1 to browse - have been here tons of times and never encountered this policy. read more

This is an amazing place and totally affordable! I'm happy I made the visit. The clothes were organized by price and nothing was over $10! I bought a Theory tee shirt for $4 and a Polo sweater for $2. Everything else I bought was either one or two dollars. If I had more time, I would have got more stuff! read more

Martha's Table is a fantastic DC gem. I have yet to find another thrift store like this one in the city. A few reasons why this thrift shop stands out: 1. It's locally owned community shop with a great philanthropy, dedicated to fulfilling the needs of low-income and homeless families and individuals. 2. They have very friendly staff and volunteers 3. Martha's Table feels like a real hole-in-the-wall thrift store with extremely reasonable prices, unlike many outrageously priced consignment shops, and secondhand boutiques in the city. There are set prices for all shirts, sweaters, pants, etc. 4. That said, they have a fantastic mix of brand name items mixed with actual vintage clothing. Sure you may run across a few of last season's Forever 21 pilled or worn out sundresses, but overall I've found some great clothes here. All in all, you'll have to dig for good finds, but it's worth the time if you love thrifting. Highly recommend! Beware there are no fitting rooms. Wear spandex if you need to try things on. read more

I think this is the only honest-to-god thrift shop in NW, possibly the District. Perfect for if you need work wear (think $4 designer dress shirts for men), and since the prices are so low, it's totally worth it to find something that's almost right, and then getting hemmed or taken in. The next time you're in need of wardrobe basics, my advice is to skip Marshall's and hit up Martha's Outfitters. Side note- they only take cash, but $20 goes a long way here. read more

I am updating my review. The store layout changed which has affected the quantity of items the store has. I have been there 3 times since the change and of the last 2 times came out empty handed. The one time I found only 1 item which is crazy because all the other times I've been I made out like a bandit. I am not sure why the decision was made to only pull out a handful of item and go with a "boutique" feel but this isn't working for an avid thrifter. I won't say I won't ever go back but will only go back if I'm on that side of town. I am taking Martha's Table off my "favorites" list for now. read more

Spectacular place. I highly recommend donating here, shopping here, and volunteering here. Heads up. Their volunteer times book up pretty fast so try to plan ahead if possible. In terms of shopping you can find some great things here. Keep in mind its a thrift store, so yes you may not like the "quality" of all the items, but again, this is a thrift store, not Nordstroms. The staff is very friendly and its in a great location. If you are walking by, just step in and take a look. Martha's table is a great place that is accomplishing great things. read more

I would highly recommend donating at Martha's. I have been donating and shopping at martha's for over a year and we donate pretty much on a monthly basis. The manager can be a bit gruff at times but I've seen her and the other volunteers readily give things to needy people all the time. There also have been times where disgruntle people come in demanding free stuff and Inge has dealt with them very kindly yet firmly. The proceeds of the donated goods at Martha's outfitters help fund Martha's soup kitchen. I have seen people lined up around the block for the kitchen. Also, Martha's is a great place to buy stuff including new items donated directly from Crate and Barrel. I have bought several crate and barrel items for a fraction of the cost of buying them in stores. Thus, you get the benefit of donating to a great cause of helping feed people, a tax deduction for the donation, (they will send you a form for taxes), and if you buy items, it a direct benefit to your own wallets and your purchases helps fund the food services to a needy community. I highly recommend martha's outfitters to all of my friends. And while I too at times have felt some abruptness, after sometime I noticed it wasn't a personal affront. I also don't think even as an employee they are paid much and the employees/volunteers spend their time there because they believe it's a good cause. I do not have any relationship with the employees/volunteers there. I have frequently donate and bought things at marthas and felt it necessary to share my positive experiences. read more

Sweet. I got a really nice shirt for $1, unlike anything else in my wardrobe. Also a nice sleeveless shirt for $4. And some awesome Justin Bieber-like pants for $4. They had a lot of great stuff! the place was pretty crowded for a small space. The men's section was VERY crowded... with both men and women. They even had some nice shoes for like $10, though not a ton to choose from. The prices were pretty clearly marked. When I went to the cash register, the woman told me $18 when I'd calculated $9, so I asked her to explain to me, and she quickly realized she'd done something wrong and corrected it. Not necessarily a ton of things I actually wanted to buy, but I was also in a bit of a hurry. I totally plan to go back. It normally would cost $20+ for nice shirts like those in this city, which is so ridiculous. read more
