I stopped in after work on a Wednesday so it was pretty quiet. They were getting ready for the band that must have been playing later. I sat at the bar and had a couple of beers and a burger. Martin's Downtown Bar has some friendly staff and a nice open space to boot. Our bartender hooked us up with some cool rye whiskey, and also offered some leftover green beer which I was less than enthused about. (8 days after St. Patty's Day is a little long for me).. However, Martin's craft beers did salvage the afternoon, and they do have a nice space. I get the feeling that this place really rocks at night, because they are set up for live bands to the max. I sure if I returned in the evening that they would push the envelope to a 4-5 star rating. read more

Passing through we were pointed in this direction for lunch. We were welcomed and got to sit in a comfortable setting. The drinks were delicious and fairly priced. The salad was fantastic, as was the mac and cheese. My wife said the chili was a bit sweet but apparently balanced with the provided chips, and the Tijuana fries were alright. The waitress was really kind in packaging and pricing things that made the best deal for us which was nice seeing as we got a bunch of plates and split everything up. This place is great for a reasonably priced, yummy deal! Tuesday nights are "bourbon and bbq" night and the deals are amazing! Kentucky Cherry Coke (w/ bourbon) is $5 and completely worth it. The Livin the Dream BBQ platter is also $5 off and the perfect bbq sampler for two! Complete with pulled pork, chicken/bacon kabobs, fall off the bone ribs, and allll the fixins. Update: The black bean veggie burger used to be an awesome (free) substitution for any of the burgers offered. Now they've switched to a tiny, dry Beyond Burger patty for a $2 upcharge. Can I just say this place is great! I used to live in Roanoke before covid hit and I went there almost every weekend with friends. From the food to the drinks to the live music I always felt welcomed and loved, this place is truly a vibe. I recently came back for a visit and wanted to see how it was doing. We were visiting family in virginia and passed through Roanoke for the night. Stopped in for dinner after stopping at a local brewery. The wait for a burger and bbq sandwich was 1 hour. We ate outside at their tables by the street. What a mistake that was. At one point there were 10 customers standing by our table smoking as we ate. They need a smoking area if they expect customers to eat outside. The food was fine...the wait on a tuesday night was way too long. My wife has eaten here several times but this was my first trip. my initial impression is that this place is probably a better bar than restaurant. We went on a Thursday evening. A band was setting up. I got the feeling the place wouldn't come to.life until 10pm when the band would start. I had the cheese steak hoagie. there was nothing special about this sandwich whatsoever. I was really disappointed. My wife had the petite crab cakes off the appetizer list. Like my sandwich, they were just ok, nothing to get excited about. As popular as this restaurant is, I expected a lot more. It was just ok. Our meals could have come from Applebees, logans or just about any Chain restaurant. The food is excellent American fare, before I went vegan Ioved their various mac n cheese options. Drinks prices are great and they had a great seasonal white sangria. They have the Beyond burger and if you order it with no cheese and on sourdough, it's vegan (normal is a brioche bun). Friendly staff and it's a fun atmosphere. The only reason for one star off is the bathrooms are pretty gross and it's extremely loud in there. If you don't like super loud music blaring or played live, I'd steer clear during late night weekends. But a fun, solid choice when you visit downtown Roanoke! read more

This was my first time in Roanoke and this restaurant made the experience! Monday's they have happy hour specials til 7pm and 1/2 price premium burgers. For $16 bucks I walked out after two craft beers and the "more cowbell" burger. The burger was huge topped with cheddar cheese, smoked brisket, fried onions, Lettuce, tomato, and bbq sauce! The staff was friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was packed with locals and regulars, some of which didn't even have to order, rather just confirmed their usual! The wine tasted cheap, the Spinach dip was mediocre, the Crabby Mac was decent, the service was fine, but the experience after we left was awful. A few hours after leaving, I realized the card I used to pay with did not make it back into my wallet so I called Martin's to see if it was mistakenly left there. I was told by whomever answered the phone that I would have to return to the establishment to retrieve any card that MAY be there. I asked if the person I was speaking to could look to confirm it was there before I drove nearly an hour to retrieve it. Her response was "there are too many to look through to know". I then reiterated that I would be driving from out of town to get it back, and was placed on hold. After nearly 15 minutes of being placed on hold, I was hung up on. And for that I will not be returning-- the food wasn't good enough to counteract the terrible customer service described above. read more

I am not a huge burger guy (at one time in my life I would have considered myself one) but still appreciate a well crafted burger. First off, Martin's does make great burgers (best in Roanoke... And there are a few decent burger joints in this town, Jack Brown's, Beamer's)... But their newly added Southern Belle burger gets 5 stars! Gouda pimento cheese (say what? Is that even possible??) Slide in a Fried Green tomato, lightly battered (and I don't typically care for battered stuff in my burger), plenty of applewood smoked bacon and caramelized onions (and they snuck in a piece of lettuce for my greens). Martin's Downtown is always my default bar for three reasons: the live music, the staff, and the low key atmosphere. The food is all very delicious, though admittedly I don't walk in the door early enough to really sit down and eat in many cases, but I'm a picky eater in many cases (though you wouldn't know it looking at me! haha) and I have absolutely no complaints about anything I've tried to eat at Martin's Downtown. None! It was all great. Now, back to the music... There are several venues in the Roanoke Valley that cater to live music, and I have nothing but good things to say about each and every one of them, but this is the one that I find myself the most comfortable at--and the booking manager tends to bring in music that I always love and enjoy. We're not talking about The Worx here... If you want to see a cover band, you're going to have to find another bar. If you want to hear music, this place should be ranking high on your list! Aside from the music, and the food, I'll briefly mention the staff: the staff is amazing! I did say brief, didn't I? ;) I have nothing but good things to say about Martin's Downtown. Maybe I am just ignorant because I come from a big city, but even so, I wasn't impressed. My dining partner and I sat at the bar, during happy hour, which only had 4 people at the time. Considering the lack of customers, one would think service would be great. However, the bartender seemed more interested in small talk with a local, deterring us from even ordering off the menu. 30mins to put in an order killed the vibe. It happened to be Taco night which you can never go wrong with. Not just standard tacos but somewhere around ten different kinds to choose from. Service was not great but was not terrible either. Haven't had a chance to try the food yet, so I'm reviewing it on its merits as a music venue and bar. It's a decent place for a show, and if you just want to hang out and drink/talk without paying much attention to the band, there's plenty of room/tables on the restaurant side of the room that aren't as focused on the stage. Martin's is a spot that was a little off the beaten path for me and took a while for me to check out. However, each time I've gone I've had more fun! My review is much more for the music and bar than the food (only eaten here once). Martin's has a small outdoor area that's splendid in the summer and a good break from the heat inside when a band is jamming and the place is packed. And that situation is more often than not with tons of bands rolling through every week. The area is a spacious enough that you can still get timely service at the bar and have a good view of the venue's band stage, which lies at the back right of the restaurant. My only food experience here is the Thursday Taco night, where domestic beers are only $2-3 and gourmet tacos are $3 each. There's a veggie option, but you can also ask to change up different tacos to make them vegetarian. Not the best options for us herbivores, but I come here mainly for the people and the music. Plenty of beers are available here, and the chalkboard above the bar depicts all the specials currently going on, usually at least 4-6 of them at one time! My favorite part of Martin's though is most likely the people - I always seem to meet new, friendly faces here that make the entire experience even better. If you're looking for some live music and cool people, Martin's a great spot to drop by when in Star City! read more
