I've only been here for a wedding so I can't comment on what it's like day to day - but as an event…read morevenue it was pretty cool, I thought. The place itself isn't huge, but certainly big enough to hold a bunch of tables for dinner, and then a bunch of floor to be danced on later in the night. The bar was well stocked, and the staff behind it were happy to put up with our increasingly rowdy shenanigans as the night went on - though I don't know how much of this was because we were there for someone's special day, and how much was their natural pleasantness. Out the front is quite a nice deck opening out onto an expanse of lawn which is all very scenic, but because this is waterfront the wind can be a problem. Overall this place is pretty classy, though. Do the prices reflect this? Couldn't say, the wedding covered everything. Aww yeah.

Beautiful spot for a wedding, though it being windy did make it a bit hard to hear the ceremony and of course blows hairdos about. Although that was nothing compared to the disappointing performance by the celebrant! (Which is, of course, unrelated to the venue.) The interior of the building was elegantly laid out, as you would expect for a wedding, and the bar was available as well. The open plan area made it great for a seated meal but also made for a suitable dancing area. The bathroom facilities were also of a high standard.

It's a fairly new establishment in the area, but it's become a regular hangout for a few beers and very good food. You definitely feel the '80's vibe when you're there, and its always nice to see a little appreciation for that era. Their pizzas are delicious, particularly 'Rangi's Hangi' and 'Larry the Lamb'. They do a very nice caesar salad and my favourite main has to be the crispy chicken burger with aioli and melted brie- one of the best restaurant burgers I've had. They've got a good range of ciders and do a few cocktails to quench your thirst. They also serve most of their drinks in 600mL milk bottles, which is a really cool touch. I'd have to say that Nineteen Eighty One is best known for their fortnightly Wednesday quiz nights. The place gets packed and its always a good laugh- there's even a prize for the team that comes second to last.

We had the garlic cob for Entree. For Mains, My wife chose the Steak & Kidney pie with mash. I had the sundried tomato and feta cheese stuffed chicken fillet. My wife said it was the best pie she had ever eaten. I really enjoyed the stuffed chicken too. The decor brought back lots of memories.

I had never thought of Waiheke as a weekend break let alone holiday destination. We stayed at the Cross Trees Chalet, conveniently located in the property adjacent to the Te Whau Estate. After two weeks of windy, rainy and cold weather, we were blessed to have clear, still weather on this jaunt. Arriving at Te Whau, we were stunned at the view. The restaurant is located atop a hill, and looks down at its vineyard. Across the small inlet, one can see the Kennedy Point Ferry terminal. And what a marvellous view made all the more spectacular by the fading azure blue skies and the sun painting the skyline above Auckland City a burnished gold. Just spectacular. We started with the entree of Seared Kingfish and my wife had scallops. I can't really say much other than superb. For my main, I had Gnocchi wrapped in aubergine while my wife had the lamb. Again, both dishes were just superb. For dessert, I had a cheddar cheese with a glass of Semillon. My wife had the sticky date pudding. The only thing I would have done differently would have been to get the cheese platter because I just wanted more. The sticky date pudding was the best I have ever eaten in the world. The flat white (coffee) she had with it was the best flat white she'd ever had. And she can drink coffee! ;-) This has been the best dining experience I have had in a long time. The service was great. Tony and Moira have really set the bar high with their care and attention to detail. It's easy to see why they have done very well with awards over the years. But don't take my word for it, try it yourself. You won't be disappointed.

I arrived at 2.50pm for lunch, which ends at 3pm. They were more than willing to accommodate my needs, and served me a fantastic lunch of pork and pistachio terrine (see photo). I will be back next time I'm in Auckland!
