I had an extremely disappointing experience with OC Skin Institute…read more I made my appointment three weeks in advance because I specifically wanted to see a doctor regarding my melasma. Before scheduling, I explained my condition to the receptionist and asked whether the practice treated melasma. I was told, "Yes, we treat melasma. Our owner treated his wife." When I arrived, I was surprised to learn there was no doctor available to see patients. I asked where the doctor was and was told that the doctor does not treat patients and that I would only be seen by a registered nurse. If I had been told this when I made the appointment, I would have chosen a different practice. The registered nurse immediately told me that I did not have melasma and that they were only sun spots. This was contrary to diagnoses I had already received from dermatologists in both South Korea and Russia, who independently confirmed that I have melasma. Despite this, she recommended cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen. After the treatment, my skin developed severe blisters and painful open wounds. Instead of improving my condition, the treatment left me burned and bleeding. I called the office on Friday, explained what had happened, and even sent photos of my injuries. The nurse never called me back or spoke with me directly. On Monday, I called again because the wounds were still bleeding and burning. I was simply told by the receptionist that it was "normal." I was also told they had emailed aftercare instructions on Friday, but I never received any email. When they sent it again, it was clearly a brand-new email, not a resend of a previous message. I am deeply concerned about the lack of follow-up, compassion, and medical responsibility shown after a procedure that caused significant skin damage. Patients deserve proper communication and appropriate medical care, especially when complications occur. One more thing prospective patients should know: although you may be charged as if you are visiting a doctor's office, you may not actually be treated by a physician. That is something patients deserve to know before making an appointment. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this practice. The lack of transparency, poor communication, and inadequate follow-up after an adverse outcome were extremely disappointing.
