The playground is badly in need of minor leveling and fresh wood chips- something the county has declined to maintain for many years now. More trash cans are needed as well as an upgrade from the filthy portable toilet. The playground features lots of benches with great sight lines for parents to sit and watch their kids play. There is a large activity center with monkey bars, climbing stations, and several different types of slides. Three different swing sets, including a tire swing (the major draw of the playground) mean something for most able-bodied kids. There are no accessible swings or activities, which excludes young people who use wheelchairs or who require more support.

One is in West Orange, NJ, by Franklin Ave down the hill. The other is in Orange, NJ, off N Day Street. This is about the latter. This neighborhood park went through a series of improvements a few years ago. I believe the Township of Orange hopes to do another round of updates and add more to Colgate again. Currently, Orange's Colgate Park has a little something for everyone: -- Basketball courts -- KIddie playgrounds -- Picnic tables under gazebo -- Grassy field areas -- Swimming pool -- Ledges, ramps, rails, and a bowl for skaters and BMX riders Colgate Park is also a Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) location in Orange. Through SFSP, kids of all ages can get meals and snacks during the summer at no cost at schools, parks, and other neighborhood locations. I visited Colgate Park this evening to watch Luna Stage's Hamlet (Abridged) in the Parks. From July 10-19, Luna Stage presented FREE Shakespeare in four parks - with three of them in Orange (Colgate, Metcalf, and Monte Irving). People brought lawn chairs and blankets, and it was a cool theater under the stars experience at Colgate.

Being of the origional Dutch lineage, I do take great pride in the pursuits of reading any books and periodicles and definately visiting the landmarks. Unfortunately Dutch food plays virtually no significant role then nor now. Once I reached the double sectioned park on a struggling sunny May afternoon, a calmness greeted me in the form of -- doused city traffic rumble and a delicious cool breeze coming from the 2nd ave enterance. Big trees canopy many of the sitting areas, the center square of the park is wide open for taking in the beautiful golden rays. Peter Stuyvesant was a rough and tumble patriot that was kind to the Indians but a bulldog to the Brits. Traded wampum and pelts with our honest trading partners, built Wall Street to keep out the English. Standing infront of Peter Stuyvesants statue, I did feel incredibly proud to be Dutch. We gotta work on that food issue though.

The few people on the board have advised us of the stringent process of the Superintendent of Education for many years. Scarsdale is also one of the most affluent suburban Westchester villages besides Bronxville, Rye, Chappaqua and Bedford. Back in 1981, Scarsdale was prominent in the news after the scandalous murder of the Scarsdale Diet Doctor, Dr. Tarnower remember? His longtime girlfriend, Jean Harris, shot the doctor at his home when she suspected he was having an affair with another woman. Poor Jean Harris was convicted of 2nd-degree murder & served 12 years in prison. Back when I was a kid the story made the headlines everywhere! These days we often enjoy the many businesses here in bucolic Scarsdale: the variety of restaurants, cafés, the reliable Scarsdale Post Office, and many lovely shops that line the square. The Vernon Hill shopping mall is great with a Trader Joe's, and lovely DeCicco & Sons for gourmet grocery shopping. Scarsdale is approximately 45 minutes train ride to Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal on Metro North. Thank you for reading.

One of the best events was the music festival in the past - not sure if they're going to have it in 2026. I went one year, it was a lot of fun. The town is known for being affluent and for its great public schools. Friends and relatives have mentioned how competitive it can be - one of my friends scored a perfect math SAT and ended up going to an Ivy League university. Others started their own businesses. Nothing too exciting seems to happen here - locals may remember the Scarsdale diet doctor scandal but that was many decades ago. For entertainment, the town offers convenient access to Manhattan via train or car. Not many downsides to living in Scarsdale if you can afford it.

When you arrive at the "nature walk", you walk down a long concrete path surrounded by walls with little portholes in them, a kind of nautical theme. Then you arrive at the waterfront to an up-close view of a recycling plant, with stories-high piles of aluminum, steel, iron, etc. on the point across the creek. Behind that is Long Island City, not exactly known for its architecture or beauty. But you're on the water, and there's hardly anyone else there. Not bad for a city of 8.5 million. Then you walk down some more concrete paths to an area with markers by the bushes and trees telling you about them. I'm sure it's prettier other times of year, but in mid-April it wasn't impressive. Then it dumps you out in another industrial zone that takes awhile to loop around and get back to civilization. It was worth doing once.

The entrance to the Holland Tunnel has more traffic and more honking, but the pseudo green space near the entrance is named Freeman Plaza and not Freeman Park, taking it out of the running for most unpleasant NYC park.
