Horrible college. Professors are no available during office hours and the academic department for accounting doesn't do anything if you have concerns. This one star is for being on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, having dorms somewhat nearby, and the part-time job I started as a transfer student as a nanny. If it weren't for the family I worked for, I probably would've transferred out of Marymount and moved out of the city. Now, for the review of Marymount itself as a "college institution": UM NO. Faculty, administration and students. Programs, activities and clubs. NO to it all. I feel like all "normal" kids that just came here for the city all stick together, which was nice, but that's not what college is about. You are supposed to want to mingle with other people, but here, YOU DO NOT. Another thing that really stinks about Marymount is once you graduate (if you do because the retention rate is only ~66%), all your friends move away from the city. I get that the city in itself has a high turnover rate but these people that you get close to throughout college all vanish. It's really sad. Classes: A complete joke. Pretty sure I had a magician/wizard person as an Intro to Comm professor. Or it was a student taking the class. I think I've tried to block it out. The electives I took were the most bizarre things in the world. Something about menstruation to environmental science where our professor would want us to teach the class. Thumbs up to Dan Diggles for Intro to Improv though, really brought on my inner dramatics and I enjoyed stepping out of my comfort zone in that class. The cost. One word: WHY. Every month when those loans come out of my account, I think WHY DID I CHOOSE MARYMOUNT? Then I remember, they actually took all my transfer credits which is another pro. You have to fight it though, because you have to fight for everything. They will tell you you are not on track to graduate, even though you are, just to get more tuition money. Yes, this happened to me. I was only one credit short and there was surprisingly a one credit class offered in January, so I took that. No need to pay for three credits because that'll take about two years to pay off. So all in all, 2 years after graduation, whenever I hear the word "Marymount", I can't help but cringe. read more

Graduated,& happy I attended MMC. The teachers were fabulous,except for 1 or 2 bad apples. Enjoyed all my classes,& the older adult students were friendly &,respectful.The younger students were a pain,always crying like babies. They were never satisfied & complained about everything. Despite the halls being a replica of Glee, the overpriced cafe that closes too early, and the small desks that are designed for oompa loompas, Marymount was an invaluable experience for me solely because of my professors within the Communication Arts department. They were very helpful and knowledgeable in their respective fields. Career Services staff is so helpful. BUT- Be mindful that MMC's definition of diversity is different from everyone else's. Despite their claims, it is not diverse. Athletes might not want to attend. MMC is far from an athletic school. Expect to pay thousands of dollars a year to be taught by adjunct professors whose resumes aren't long enough to actually fill a page. Unless you don't mind being told how long your guests can stay over, don't stay in the dorms. It's much cheaper to get an apartment anyway. It's the type of school that you have to take the initiative to make the best of, because no one is going to hand anything to you. Joining clubs is the best way to get an actual college experience here. You're paying for it. read more

Marymount Manhattan college is great. As a student of the CDS department, I am constantly learning something new. My professors are informed, thoughtul and extremely current in their respective fields. Financial aid office is a little hectic, but I was given financial aid as well as attention (as I had a lot of questions.) My only gripe is that the computer labs are a smidgen outdated, but, otherwise. It is amazing and has put me in the right direction for my future. read more

The ONLY good thing about Marymount Manhattan is that it is in Manhattan (an experience of a lifetime). The perfect opportunity for an internship opportunity, but don't expect any help getting one unless they can use it for a photo op. 99% of my encounters as a parent were with uncaring, unwilling, and unprofessional administrators and staff who could not care less about the students' quality of education, well being, dreams, or future. Dorms are located at a considerable distance and there are a lot of late night classes. Great marketing material, flowery speeches and promises. If you're interested in anything other than Performing Arts - I would recommend you read "No Sucker Left Behind" to see what your future could hold... then grab your wallet and Run - Run as far and as fast as you can. I just had to review it since no one else has. I really disliked this school and I am sooo glad I no longer have to attend classes there. It should be called Marymount Elementary since that is pretty much how students (of all ages) are treated there. Once upon a time the administration used to be great and then all of the students' faves bounced and the school went downhill especially with that new VP of the school. What a two-faced dragon lady?! You get 1-star because an educational experience is only as good as the standards established by its leadership. 1-star reflects the Gross In-experience and Lack of integrity of the current leadership. So, I live here, lived here, stumbled in here, stumbled out, passed it, walked in to it, avoided it. The rooms are quaint, the kitchen small, and elevators slow. The halls are ringing with dancers, and singers, business majors, and writers on the prowl. Its a wonderful dorm, perfect for a new student. read more

I went here Freshman year before transferring out to a university downtown. The good thing: the classes were SO easy that I got a 4.0 during my two semesters there, pretty much guaranteeing I could get into any other Manhattan school I wanted. The bad thing: The classes. Were so. Easy. The people I went to school with didn't care about learning and there were maybe 2 or 3 people in every class that seemed like they wanted to be there, or were interested in gaining actual knowledge beyond high school. I went to public high school and these college classes were easier. I'm not sure any of the teachers were actually professors. The "school newspaper" was a joke, full of typos and badly-written articles. Don't mention that to the faculty advisor though, she was extremely passive aggressive about it when I mentioned it needed more copy editing. If you're not a dance or performing arts major, run fast. Most of my friends were dance majors so what did they care about anything other than dance? There was also a rampant amount of eating disorders among the dancers. In retrospect, the school should've done more to educate and inform their students about the dangers of this. It was pretty obvious what was going on. read more

I agree with Miguel. This school is severely over priced. I went there for a year and it was the most depressing year of my life. I am Latina & African American and was so shocked at how racist the environment was. I had racist remarks made more then once in my year there even one made by a PROFESSOR. I love the human race, my boyfriend is even white so I was so disgusted that the institution wasnt as racially accepting as I was. I took a class with professor Richard Niles & he called me " an angry black woman" in front of the whole class and basically said that since he was tenure if we wanted to file a compliant- Good Luck. If I was a little older & wiser at the time I should have taken proper legal actions. But I was more easily intimidated than I am now. Also, the student body seemed so scare to stand up for them selves. College years are the yrs young people should be uplifted & supported not tore down. $35000 down the drain. Im so upset I wasted my time & money. I transferrred to HUNTER and its so much better. Alot of the students are so fake also. Made no friends there. read more

Overall, I had a great experience at Marymount! I found the professors in my field (and others that I had outside of my discipline) were incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and passionate about what they were teaching. There are always things that can be fixed, of course, such as student space, but in terms of the education received, I can't thank the Communication Arts program enough for their training and education. College is what you make of it. I highly suggest getting involved on campus in student clubs because it's so incredibly easy to make friends and to find something you're passionate about. All in all, if you're looking for a unique college experience at a small school in one of the world's greatest cities, definitely consider Marymount. read more

Let me preface by saying this: I'm an older, transfer student so this is all written from my personal observations. Also, the main takeaway should be to just be realistic about what your goals are for school, what you want your college experience to be like, and what you REALLY intend to do in the future. Now... My suggestion would be, if you're just out of high school and want a more typical college experience, do NOT go here. The activities are very limited and even then, most people stay in their cliques all day, everyday with minimal interaction with other students, which seems strange for college. Go check out a "regular' school and you'll see what I mean--even the teams, clubs, fraternities/ sororities (MMC has basically none of the aforementioned, by the way) still at least interact with each other and/or the community, even if they're not all best friends. Before you say that this stuff doesn't matter, keep in mind that not only do these interactions improve the chances of finding a study group or people you can vent with/ cry with/ hangout with (which you will probably need at some point or another) but graduate schools and other programs will be looking to see what you've been involved in. If you intend to major in anything other than the performing arts, really research your potential department because the other departments tend to get shafted. For example, each department generally has a floor that they're located on with exceptions of course. For some odd reason, though, the actors and dancers have classes everywhere, including the 7th floor. Which means that while you're in psychology, speech pathology, art history, etc., you get to listen to screaming and tap dancing for the duration of your lessons (and during exams and basically all the time). It's not the department's fault so much as it's whoever decided to put the studio on the 7th floor. That's poor planning on their part. Not only are the students on the 7th floor being disturbed, but so are the students above and below them. The cafeteria is overpriced. I think a PB&J was about $5 last time I checked, so bring food from home or just go to the bodega down the block. Ah, the library. Let me start by saying, Marymount has done a decent job of maintaining licenses to research databases, which can be accessed from home. That's actually really awesome. HOWEVER, this school seems to have some weird logistics thing going on. As an example, at the end of the summer, the coffee shop was redone and all new furniture and a nice flat screen TV/ menu were brought in, but the library still only has about maybe 25 computers that actually work at one time. Keep in mind that a large number of students here commute so a) there must be an assumption that they all must own laptops and b) they're willing to drag it all the way up (and risk having it stolen) from places like Long Island or New Jersey. Yes, MMC does have laptops you can check out if all the desktops are being used, but they either have great speed and can't connect to the network, or they can't connect to the printer. It's a huge gamble if you have work you really need to get done. Speaking of printers, there are 2 printers. Yes, TWO. So if you need to print anything do it the day before anything is due because one of them will inevitably be down at any given time. Don't even bother trying to study or work on the lower level and I'll get to that in a second. The students: I'll be blunt and say many are trying way too be hard to be the "quintessential Manhattanite" and failing. They instead come off as very shallow and at times rude (I've found that real NYers are actually helpful, but they do move quickly, which can come off as rudeness) . A perfect example would be regarding the library, actually. Perhaps it's the small size of the place but it's not set up appropriately (the group work tables are smack in the center of people trying to study), but even with that there's definitely just a lack of common courtesy. Often the students that sit at these group tables are excessively loud and discussing what they bought at Urban Outfitters, as opposed to discussing actual school work. I think most people would be less annoyed if they were legitimately working, but alas, they aren't! I gave the school 3 stars because the location is pretty great and it's easily accessible. I actually enjoy my department. I was going to transfer out, but our professors are all very approachable, understanding, and knowledgable about the field. I've had some professors from other departments for various classes here and I cannot say the same for them, unfortunately. Perhaps it's because I'm a non-major for them? But check their ratings online and you'll see it's not just me. I'm not sure about the other departments, but our class sizes are pretty small, which makes getting extra help that much easier. If you do choose to go here, hopefully you have a better experience! read more

I am a graduate of Marymount College and I was impressed at the opportunities in store for me upon graduation. Although, being from Atlanta, I missed home a lot. I traveled a great deal after college and before raising a family. But I definitely advise sending your daughters here if given the opportunity. You will not be unhappy with your decision. read more

These issues are petty and should not have any weight in your decision. I attended MMC from 2001 until graduating in 2005 with a B.A, majoring in both English Literature and Political Science. My professors and classmates were great. Immediately upon graduating I went on to law school. College is what you make of it. Beyond the classroom, I found that MMC afforded plenty of opportunities to engage in different social, academic and extracurricular activities. I worked on the student newspaper. In my view the most valuable aspect of being a student at MMC was the student professor ratio. Students have ample access to professors, both while attending MMC and after graduation. This college was the best decision of my life. The dorms are spectacular and in a great area of the city, with a diner nearby that take the student's meal plan. The walk to school is about 20 minutes, but not a hard walk at all because of the beautiful area you're walking through. The key word at this school is ACCEPTANCE, and for the most part, everyone has a blast and gets along. All the professors have the common goal of just wanting to see you succeed, and doing their best to help you do so. The food in the commons is amazing, and there are many, MANY items on the menu to choose from. Sandwiches, pizza, sushi, soup, salad, a frozen yogurt machine, and so much more, is all covered by your meal plan. The residence hall on 55th always has something going on like an ice cream party, movie night, trivia, and so much more. Class sizes are perfect in the sense that you are given a lot of individual attention, but are also among a large enough amount of people to have different perspectives and collaborate different ideas. Personally, I loved this school! I transferred from Sarah Lawrence not only because the tuition was ridiculously high but honestly I did not fit in with what felt like a very claustrophobic and alienating environment. When I came to Marymount, I was amazed by how nice all of the students were and how helpful all the professors tended to be. It did take some adjustment period to get used to going to school in the city since I was used to walking around trees and up grassy hills at SLC. However, I soon felt quite at home at MMC. It was amazing to be able to go out and enjoy all the city had to offer. Yes five courses is a lot to take per semester to gain all 15 credits (at SLC it was 3 courses), but worth it. You learn a lot. The staff is also very friendly and will do their best to help you with any issue. This is not the place if you are looking for a sports environment or big classrooms full of students. The classes are smaller and you get the opportunity to have individual attention. read more
