I have been to Marzano several times in the past and had excellent experiences this time it was okay. The crust on the prosciutto pizza was soft like a pillow and the tomato sauce was fresh and full of flavour. However, the pizza arrived cold at the table. Cavatelli Frutti di Mare had a rich flavour where you could taste the lobster oil that was used in a way that did not make the dish too fishy. One downside the pasta was undercooked. The cracklin chicken was the dish of envy tonight. The chicken was moist and flavourful with the skin having a snappy crust to it. Served with risotto. Marzano usually has excellent service, but this go round it was lack lustre. The restaurant was not super busy and plenty of staff were on but not very attentive. We waited over 15 minutes after we were seated before someone came to the table to greet us. We came here as a group of four--three vegetarians and myself, eating gluten free--and overall had a really positive experience. Marzano clearly puts intention behind what they do, drawing inspiration from traditional Neapolitan techniques and a focus on high-quality, simple ingredients, and that care shows up on the menu. From an accessibility standpoint, this was one of the easier Italian meals I've had while eating GF. Gluten-free options were clearly labeled, including modification notes, which made ordering straightforward. Nearly all pizzas and pastas could be made gluten free, aside from specialty pastas like the gnocchi and lasagna. They also had a gluten-free focaccia available as an appetizer, which had an excellent texture. The appetizers were a standout. We shared the gnocchi and burrata and both were delicious. Pizza got great feedback from the table overall, though a couple slices were slightly undercooked in the center and flopped when picked up. I ordered the sirloin, which was okay, though not my favorite part of the meal. Service was excellent. Our server was attentive and thoughtful, offering a soup sample to our 90-year-old guest who was unsure about the daily option, and kindly helped wrangle us for a group photo during a busy dinner hour, which I really appreciated. First let me say the servers are outstanding and they have a great selection of non alcoholic beverages at the bar. That's the good news. The bad news is that if you know anything about Italian food this place is sub par. The pasta sauce is packing and the pizza , for all the money they spent on an oven and training people, is like cardboard. If you want good pizza go to Beautie's which (s about a close to NY pizza you will get in Nelson. If you like Greek style I would suggest Leo's. Holy mamma!! I'm so freakin impressed with this place! Great service and a lovely menu with reasonable pricing. The gnocchi were incredible! Best ones ever in a North American restaurant. Seriously! I'm Italian and these were on-par with my Nonna's and ones I had in Tuscany. MAMMA MIA!!! My dinner partner had spaghetti in a marinara sauce with meatballs. I was lucky to have a taste and AGAIN!! Went there for the first time on Friday night. Ordered the squid and hamburger. Squid was grilled and some of the best I have ever had. Normally in Canada, squid or calamari is breaded and deep fried. The squid at Mariano's was so tender and flavorful. the burger was large with two smashed patties that had a good crust on it. it also had a lot of good spice which I enjoyed. The service was a little slow but overall, great experience and I will definitely go back. read more

Had my birthday dinner here. All of the staff were so kind and friendly. We didn't have a reservation but they sat us outside on their patio. It was a perfect day. The happy hour white riseling was very crisp and refreshing. Also, ordered the Rosé which was very good. The pizza was delicious, we ordered a side of artichoke aioli. Highly recommend. The pasta was served Al dente, but was a little too firm for me so the kitchen was kind enough to remake it. The buttermilk chicken was delicious. Overall the pizza stole the show. So delicious!! I had a business dinner here a few nights ago. I had a real good experience. I started with a cocktail, The Way of Zest. It was terrific. Expertly crafted. Balanced. Bourbon lovers will want to try this. We ordered 3 appetizers: meatballs, polenta sticks, and olives. All were tasty. The meatballs were very soft and moist in a savory tomato sauce. The polenta sticks were crispy and had a great corn flavor, similar taste to corn nuts. Very fun right? And you can't ever go wrong with olives. For an entree I had the crackling chicken. Boneless, crispy skin on chicken breast. We'll executed. Roasted potatoes and grilled baby carrots rounded out the plate. It did sit on a non-descript sauce. This was the only flaw of the plate. My dining partners both ordered pizza and both finished them completely. These are good sized pizzas for one person. I was hoping they would offer a piece to me...but they didn't. Upscale Italian restaurant. Seems popular. Interior is modern and they have a patio. Prices are moderate. Interesting meals as both the fettuccini and the salads had soft boiled eggs. The fettuccine was good but the chicken was battered and you could not substitute for grilled chicken. My fettuccine had a chicken bone in it. The salad was very good. The young male server with the short blondish hair was lacking in the serving graces. He was a little abrupt speaking and did not have a soft touch when serving our wine. He requires more training. Let me start by saying I love pancakes. I was pursuing menus on yelp and saw they had an apple buttermilk pancake with mascarpone - sounded delicious. It was not. The pancakes themselves had no taste - I saw apples in the bread, but no spices or buttermilk flavor. The cinnamon mascarpone was the only flavor. I could not even finish them. I was sad. The restaurant itself is beautifully appointed with pale woods, black fixtures and tile/wood floors. I'm sure the other food is good - just don't get the pancakes. read more

The only negative if I would find one would be the fungi and kale pizza needed acid like a drizzle of reduced balsamic would have sealed the deal, but it was very minor detail compared to the entire fantastic meal! I had the garden salad, pork chop and risotto and my partner had the ling cod, lentils and fried. The salad had a vinaigrette dressing. It was mostly arugula. The pork chop had bone in and was moist. The pork chop was placed on top of the risotto and there were crispy sage leaves and tomato purée on the side and accompanied by squash. The risotto was not quite done and not too flavorful. There were a fair number of them around and no traps visible. I pointed it out to the server. She shrugged and jokingly offered me a strainer before walking off. Keep in mind that this place is not cheap. It felt like a slap in the face. Any other restaurant I've been to in my lifetime would've offered to replace my half beer. I wasn't asking for bonus beer. The atmosphere was amazing, very crisp and stylish. It was lively and loud which meant we didn't feel bad bringing our newborn who likes to holler a lot. The beef carpaccio was delicious and uniquely nutty, and the pizza had amazing crust. I've never seen a rotating brick fire oven before, but it absolutely made a difference. We got the chicken fettuccine and the house burger. The fettuccine was nicely cooked and very saucy but the chicken underneath was on the drier side. Interesting meld of flavours between the pesto sauce and the tomato sauce intended for the chicken. The house burger was fairly juicy and the fries were nicely crisp. Found ourselves on a road trip to Nelson BC. The Best Western is attached to this little gem and I must say it was a wonderful surprise. Decor is elegant & stunning in its simplicity. I never knew Italian cuisine could be this creative or exquisite. We had dinner here while spending a few days in Nelson, and I'm so glad we did. My husband and I were both blown away by the quality of the dishes, the portion sizes and the freshness of their ingredients. Truly top notch. The Buttermilk Chicken Mini Maccheroni for $26, is buttermilk fried chicken thighs, preserved lemon, tuscan kale, mulato salt, pickled spicy pepper purée,green pea velouté, yellow pea dust, grana padano. That translates to one skinless, boneless chicken thigh (singular,not plural as the description states), cut into 4 small pieces, deep fried and flavourless, served on a bed of green, musihy, flavourless half-sized macaroni, a gummy mess. If you REALLY don't want to leave the hotel, get a pizza. I had the Saffron Casarecce. It should have been called the Charcoal Casarecce because the squid was completely charred, like the stuff off the bottom of a cast iron pan after you forgot about it for a half hour. I crunched into more than a few pieces of charred something. The casarecce just tasted like noodles with ketchup. The creme fraiche was good but there was nothing else on the plate worth eating it with. The irony is the "Charred Broccolini" side was more like boiled broccoli in pine sol. I'll give a second star for mediocre service and a good pizza. There are much better places to eat in Nelson. read more
