Unfortunately, the project lacked a defined process and was not client focused. There was a noticeable lack of project management, communication, and transparency. Punch list work and other complaints were never addressed properly and most importantly we had a very serious safety scare. As a licensed contractor and home inspector, this contractor took our wood burning chimney down and once the implications of that were known, he made the terrible decision to vent our furnace illegally instead of have an uncomfortable conversation with us. Our gas furnace was manufactured to vent vertically through our chimney and since CGC demoed the chimney, they made the conscious decision to illegally vent our furnace horizontally out of our house, causing a carbon monoxide back up in our home. Unfortunately, not even in this severe safety situation did we see accountability, humility or an effort to make sure we were satisfied. We are finding many short cuts and sloppy work that he will not fix. Some examples but not all encompassing include; wood cut short, wood cut crooked, bowed wall, large amounts of concrete buried in our yard instead of put in the dumpster (where there is a cost associated by weight), loud clicking from pipes in a bedroom wall due to thermal expansion, painters caulking used in the bathrooms instead of silicone caulking causing water leaks and damaged drywall. This builder decided to bury concrete, bricks and our old fence anchors in our back yard instead of haul them away (which is paid by weight). Rusty went above and beyond what we saw from other companies. We got quotes from many companies, but only Rusty went to the effort to search the house for possible sources of the problem. He provided several repair options and was upfront about which option he most recommended. Rusty also helped us pick out new lighting for the room being redone and showed us how to replace lighting ourselves in another room to match. We liked that, unlike other companies, Merrick had the ability to not just demolish and redo the drywall ceiling but also diagnose and repair any underlying structural issues. Merrick employed several rotating crews to do demolition, drywall installation, lighting installation, and painting. Each crew was professional, friendly, and completed the task well. Clean-up was excellent. Other than a weather interruption, the project finished on time. We communicated directly with Rusty throughout the project. Our only suggestion for improvement would be that sometimes we were not given an accurate estimate of when the crew would arrive. Upon immediate completion, the Merrick team's work looks great. I obtained multiple estimates and Malte's was in line with the middle of the very large range. Malte was great to work with and I love my new bathroom! He was extremely helpful in referring me to Robert at The Tile Shop in Springfield. The shop has a large number of display bathrooms, so you can get many good ideas. Robert was fantastic in providing design advice and the end result is very much due to his tactful recommendations (on several occasions, he reminded me that due to the small space, I wanted to avoid having too much going on). Malte also guided me throughout the design process, making sure that my design ideas were functional as well. Malte started and completed the remodel in the agreed upon time frame for the agreed upon price. He was always willing to explain the process and answer my questions (I was an involved and some might say demanding client.) At the completion of the project, he asked me if I was happy with everything. I have to admit that of all the numerous contractors who have worked in my house, Malte is the first to actually ask this and make sure that I was pleased with everything before he left. Vince was professional, timely and did an amazing job. He cleaned up after himself each day - even though we didn't even live in the house and he could have left it as it was. We have had wood floors redone in other homes, but honestly, Vince is the best we have ever had. The floors are truly amazing. He even ripped out a tile entry area and installed wood - they are not a perfect match - but matching 50 year old wood floors is next to impossible, and you honestly really have to look to see that they are different. We will most certainly recommend and use Dean and Vince in the future. You are lucky to get on their schedule!
