This review is based on my experience yesterday with Dr. Kastin at the Massachusetts General Hospital neurology department. I am giving a one-star rating because I was rushed in and out of the appointment with Dr. Kastin, the fact that Dr. Kastin appeared to be 'dismissive' of my problems, and because of the overall seemingly adversarial nature of the appointment (I don't feel as though I was taken seriously, and the way I was asked questions made me feel like I was being interrogated). I usually do not write 'bad' reviews or give negative feedback, but this situation was exceptional. From the beginning, I tried to explain I have Aphasia, and this interferes with my ability to express myself and give a coherent history. I carry an Aphasia card, and the doctor wouldn't even look at it. I was expected to give a coherent history despite my inability to do this. I would not recommend that anyone who has multiple conditions be seen by Dr. Kastin; he is a 'proceduralist' not a 'diagnostician.' I would go as far as saying that he prefers to work with the absolute worst cases, the 'sickest of the sick.' The patients who are easy to diagnose. Example: advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease, advanced stages of Huntington's Disease, etc. When confronted with patients who have several neurological conditions that overlap, I think he loses confidence in his ability as a physician. Yesterday, when I had the neurology appointment at Mass General, things got off to a rough start when I checked in with the receptionist and was told to contact another department at the hospital regarding my health insurance. Well, the billing department wasn't able to find me in the system and I was put on hold for 20 minutes while they contacted my insurance company to confirm that the services rendered would be covered. Ultimately, the insurance matter was straightened out, but that was just the beginning... I had expected that Dr. Kastin was going to perform a comprehensive neurological evaluation (the whole purpose of the evaluation was to rule-out or rule in dementia). I had also expected that Dr. Kastin would have a basic grasp on the fact that many neurological disorders have 'atypical' neuropsychiatric presentations. I don't think the appointment was any longer than 30 minutes or so. I brought medical records including extensive neuropsychological testing reports and other relevant information, and Dr. Kastin wouldn't take 10 minutes of his time to at least read through some of the information I brought in. I brought in a letter from a licensed clinical social worker (who is acting as my advocate) who has a master's degree in psychology and does court-ordered evaluations, and the letter explained I may have young onset dementia, and it explained some of my behavioral tendencies. Again, Dr. Kastin would not even look at it. At the end of the appointment, I told Dr. Kastin that on the Mass General web page, it says that cognitive disorders are "notoriously difficult to diagnose", and that dementia DOES affect younger people. The specialists at Mass General [supposedly] understand this, and the doctors in Maine just don't get it. THAT is why I came to Mass General. I also told Dr. Kastin that epilepsy had been suspected (but was never adequately investigated) by at least 2 previous doctors I had seen, and Dr. Kastin went on to tell me that epilepsy involves having 'convulsions' and other 'overt' symptoms. I tried my best to explain that a neuropsychiatrist had noted in my medical records the possibility that I may have frontal lobe epilepsy or frontotemporal seizure activity, and that these kinds of seizures are very hard to see on routine EEG. Dr. Kastin then went on to question why I did not tell him this earlier in the appointment, and I again told him that my cognitive problems interfere with me giving a coherent history, and this is noted in my medical records, AND, Dr. Kastin never really gave me the chance to tell him because he kept interrupting me. I left feeling discouraged and disappointed. I will speak to my advocate next week and try to see if I can be transferred from Dr. Kastin to a cognitive neurologist whose specialty is in Aphasia, language disorders, cognitive-behavioral disorders, movement disorders, and dementia. I doubt that I will have much luck though. Maybe my best bet is to go to Mclean hospital and try to be seen by Dr. Price, who specializes in the problems I have. With all due respect, I am open to the idea that Dr. Kastin is good at what he does when it comes to working with patients who are in the advanced stages of neurodegenerative disease: the ones who are easy to diagnose. I did get the impression that he has neither the time nor the patience for assessing patients with multiple complex conditions (e.g., patients with brain injuries, complex seizures, and cognitive decline). I was hard-pressed to give even a rating of 'one star' based on that experience, and even a 1-star rating is too generous. read more

This review is only directed at the OMFS Department and MGH Dental Group at MGH, and it is based solely on my own personal experience: Based upon my personal experience, I strongly caution you to avoid this practice, for the physical and mental health of yourselves and your families. I underwent multiple surgical treatments through this office over the course of 3 years. Firstly, the front of house service over the course of my treatment was abysmal. I first met with the surgeon for a consultation and was happy to hear that my prior authorization through insurance had proceeded (something that I was nervous about coming into this procedure.) Yet almost immediately after this notification, the office coordinator who I was working with unceremoniously left the practice (which raised an early red flag that I unfortunately did not heed.) The new coordinator (that I worked with for about a full year) was careless at best and willfully negligent at worst. I received a call after a long wait which informed me that my surgery was now scheduled with just days of advance notice. I was shocked, and the surgeon needed call me personally to apologize and reschedule. My first surgery was relatively uneventful. Though, an implanted medical device started to malfunction and cause enormous pain (to the point of my nearly losing consciousness at its severity.) I was advised by the office numerous times to continue to operate the medical device at home, despite the severe pain and the very visible fact that the medical device was bending and warping in my mouth. Eventually, the medical device malfunctioned and fractured. It was only then that the surgeon admitted something was wrong (obviously.) Despite the fact that my pre-surgical models called for a certain degree of jaw manipulation before the second surgery was attempted, and despite the fact that I had not achieved this degree of manipulation because the device failed, and despite the fact that the surgical standard (as confirmed by a second opinion) is over-manipulation of the jaw to compensate for a standard expected relapse, my surgeon decided to remove the broken device and continue with our surgical course as if no malfunction occurred. This was baffling at the time and another major warning that I unfortunately overlooked as I (at the time) trusted my medical team. It is also important to note that between the time of surgeries one and two I attempted to contact the office for information on my upcoming procedure many times with no answer, and was ultimately forced to contact the administration of the OMFS Dept. at MGH to receive an answer from my medical team. Many appointments, and braces treatments, and phone calls, and x-rays, and models later, I was "ready" for the second surgery that I needed. After the second surgery, the complications (which I will list below) that I received after the first surgery were exacerbated and added to. It was now also clear that the decisions the surgeon made over the course of this treatment were harmful, and in my opinion, that he was not qualified to operate this medical device nor to address the situation at hand when the device failed. I am confident that his decision making directly resulted in my current condition. My complications and symptoms now include: tinnitus, hearing loss, pain, aches, TMJ, clicking and popping in jaw and ears, dislocation of the jaw joint when pressure is applied, low self esteem, depression, post traumatic stress, and anxiety. After issuing a formal complaint about this in writing to my surgeon, he discontinued all communication with me and effectively abandoned me. I now require a revision surgery elsewhere to repair the status of my jaw and bite. This has been one of, if not the, most traumatic and disappointing experiences of my life. Seek your treatment elsewhere, despite the "prestige" of the MGH brand. read more

BEWARE - DO NOT GO TO THIS HORRENDOUS HOSPITAL. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE MEDICAL CENTER IN NASHUA NH IS AN AFFILIATE OF MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL. Worst ER experience of my life. I have been to many "third world countries" and the health care I received there was so much better than the dreadful health care I received at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua - how is this place allowed to lawfully operate? Will someone please audit / investigate this hospital. The staff was constantly swearing and complaining about all the patients. They were even laughing at and making fun of a younger man that was brought in for mental health issues. It is run like a prison with the "you are the prisoner we are the correctional officers in charge mentality". I never experienced such unprofessional behavior in any hospital setting I have been in. The intake person from ACCESS was a total joke - she was abrasive and rude from the start - someone in that position should have some compassion, some empathy - but she had none. How she has a job as the first line of mental health care for individuals in dire situations is appalling and dangerous. As I laid in the ER for hours and hours in the hallway I watched the unprofessional interactions between the doctors, nurses, security, and other staff. This place needs to be under investigation. I was so upset by what I witnessed that I asked to be discharged - but the smug nurse told me that only the ACCESS intake person can discharge me and it was decided that I had to wait until the morning to speak with the "psychiatric team" before being discharged - no exceptions. A few minutes later I asked the same smug nurse if I could see the doctor because my kidney stones were bothering me - I had mentioned that I had a very large stone in my left kidney. Within 30 minutes of asking to see the doctor about my kidney stone they discharged me - the doctor never saw me about my kidney stone pain / issue (they 100% ignored that) and suddenly I did not have to speak with the "psychiatric team" in the morning prior to being discharged. This can only be attributed to Medicaid discrimination - if I had better insurance I am sure the doctor would have taken a look at my kidney stone situation. I will file a complaint with Medicaid over this. Stay away from this awful hospital - I could see in the time I spent there that the negative and nasty environment is encouraged and is the norm. Shame on the doctors, nurses, security, and other staff working the shift before midnight on January 28, 2021 and after midnight on January 29, 2021. Please go to Portsmouth Hospital if you need medical attention whether it is physical or mental. And speaking of class you have none there was only one woman I met in this location that had class and who had empathy and who was an actual true nurse, and her name was Liz, and she was a good person, but unfortunate and she saw how I was being treated, but unfortunately, the poor woman couldn't say anything and couldn't help me because if she did, she'd be ostracized by the other trash that works in that location ashamed to say I live in this state thank God I was born in New York and thank God I've places and thank I'm not gonna be staying in Massachusetts for very long because this place is truly truly disgusting and disgraceful. Do NOT even think about using any of the Psychiatric Services at Mass General Hospital! This hospital is stuck in the dark ages with respect to treatment- The outpatient clinic is Wang 815 Clinic-all clinicians there practice the ancient "Label & Drug" treatment mien. There is absolutely No discussion beyond that mode. No educating the patient wrt his symptoms, no talk about prevention, no trying to investigate causes! No helping the patient with his everyday life like nutrition, exercise, sleep, socialization with positive people. Absolute waste of time! The inpatient facility is called Blake 11. There you will get mediocre hospital food and psychiatric meds, and just maybe without any talk with you, you'll get stuck in a line for ECT! There is NO psychotherapy! When you leave this unit, you only get a fistful of prescriptions-No help wrt readjusting to the outside world post hospitalization. Avoid MGH's ER Dept if you can as it is a disorganized place unto its self. You can wait over 7 hours for routine tests. Didn't see a Physician for over 8 hours. Was there for 11 hours. If you need to stay over, the ER Dept seems to have little pull to get patients admitted to a hospital room, if they even try. I question whether the NP even put in a request. During the night after waiting all day, many ER patients were sleeping on uncomfortable stretchers in small cubbies or in the hallway of the ER dept with a sheet tossed over them left alone. The ER Nurses hang in the center pod socializing and didn't appear to interact with the ER patients. Much of the info (very little medical) disseminated was conflicting. Each RN or NP had a different take, there seems to be no centralization or staff ramifications. No Administrator on board to speak to about the ER situation. It's every patient for themselves. Make sure your MGH Primary advocates for you to not be treated like another number by the ER Nurses and MD's. Otherwise your experience will be the same problematic one as many MGH ER patients have reported for years on Yelp and other review sites. read more

Very unorganized, dangerous cross walk me and my grandmother almost got ran over in the cross walk! Construction signs and tape everywhere but ZERO construction going on. It smells inside like your definitely going to catch something in there. Should be cleaner way cleaner. They have all their stuffy ignorant supervisors and fed agents laughing and gloating all around the building protecting "their" investments. This is a sick establishment. An poor excuse of a hospital. Elderly getting crashed into in the hallways by nurses very despairing to witness. I fell bad for the people they juice up on medication and have no explanation of what the "so called disease they have is". Place is a joke and should be shut down. Zero privacy zero cleanliness zero education in health. Im sure they've got plenty if court dates lined up already.
