We managed to get in and there was no line but by the time we were done ordering sandwiches a line had formed (and not because of us). Very lovely place with friendly staff. They have great variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, deli, seafood, frozen meals, etc. I bought some fresh pick Nova Scotian blueberries and they tasted amazing. Couldn't get enough of. Staff doesn't seem to be treated well at this place, but are all quite helpful and personable to customers!! Produce and bakery is really good, one of my favourite stops! Their deli display case always looks bare, I've had a few of the pre made sandwiches and wraps, they never seem that fresh. Prices are a bit high, especially in the giftware section! I've seen similar things for sale at other stores locally for half the price. read more

We were excited to go to this market on our way to Halifax from Moncton. We arrived at 6 PM. Entered via the fruit and vegi area and found it all clean and seemed fresh. Prices however were higher than the local supermarkets. Including dairy and dry goods I didn't see anything spectacular as to choices. The prepared food area seemed ok for sandwiches. The bakery was empty which saddened us because that was why we stopped. Only a few rolls and prepared sweet breads such as muffins. Well on to the promised lobster dinner. It was a food truck outside and in the rain. Not a single dry table. So we went to the seafood market in search of frozen shelled lobster. At almost $40 CAD/pound we went for it and decided to make our on lobster rolls. See the pictures more than 1/2 the lobster was mushy ground up Lobster much to our disappointment. Don't buy the store packaged fruits and veggies. They try to hide moldy produce in with good produce to get rid of it. I'm getting tired of buying food there just to get home and realize half of it is rotten. This has been an on going issue. For a store known for produce, the prices are also very high. Unfortunately prices at wal-mart, East End Mini-Mart and other similar stores are usually lower. read more

What a unique place. Part grocery store, part cafe, part gift shop. There's lots of cool things to discover in the middle of nowhere. We've made a habit of stopping here on our trips to New Brunswick. It's usually a busy spot so parking can sometimes be tough but they have lots of goodies if you need a snack for the road. There's a deli, a produce market, a limited grocery section, seasonal plants, gifts, jewelry ... and don't forget the lunch counter! Masstown's lunches are legendary. Prices are reasonable and servings are hearty, which is what you need when you're trying to put as many miles behind you as possible. Because it has such high turnover in clientele, sometimes the facilities aren't as hygienic as you might like. This is usually corrected quite quickly, however, and that's all you can ask for. A random winter, err spring, road trip brought us to Masstown Market. Half because we wanted to wave to the NS Webcam, half because we heard they serve delicious seafood chowder. They do! It was lunch time when we arrived and the cafeteria end of the market was crawling with hungry people! We both has a bowl of seafood chowder and a half sandwich. The sandwiches are made on your choice of fresh homemade bread and top with 'real' meat; nothing processed here! I had turkey on white with honey mustard, it was perfection! A tea biscuit came with my seafood chowder and I ended up buying a pack of them to rake home; they were that good! We were very impressed with the prices and wish it was realistic to drive there for lunch everyday! We briefly browsed around their grocery goods and gift shop; this place is certainly a gem and worth stopping in! I can't wait to road trip there again, hopefully in warmer weather;! read more

Masstown is what happens when you put all the good things in life together - jewelry, booze, pies, fresh bread, even fresher veggies and a jillion other delights. Masstown is a traditional stop for me before I head over the Wentworth mountain on my way to the cottage in Wallace. I also always stop on the way back to stock up on fresh veggies and eggs to bring home with me... everything tastes so much better from Masstown and it is CHEAPER too! You really can't go wrong with this place. I have a gorgeous pair of starfish earrings and a beautiful umbrella (that hasnt been murdered by downtown halifax wind yet!) from the gift shoppe and I also buy delicious corn relish from here whenever I run out. I also can speak very, very highly of the brownies... mmmmmmmmmmmm. Totally worth going out of your way for! read more

After a few years of passing thru without stopping, we finally decided to stop for ice cream and since been hooked. We stop by anytime we are traveling along the 104. They recently renovated so that there is more seating, cafeteria style. You have a choice of fresh menu items, or wrapped deli items across the isle. This is the spot for a cheap meal. The bakery section is well stocked and also includes low sugar options for diabetics. Depending on the season, the bakery might include seasonal items. An amazing one-stop shop for your food needs along this stretch of the Trans-Canada highway in Nova Scotia. Masstown Market started as a produce stand, and this is still what they do best: lots of local fruit and veg can be found here. But they've now expanded to carry lots of other foodstuffs, especially local specialities like flavoured granulated maple sugar. There's a garden centre, a deli, a pretty good bakery, and a lunch counter that does things like sandwiches, seafood chowder, and slices of pizza. But the food highlights are their ice-cream counter, and the Catch of the Bay fishmonger and takeaway seafood. Their fish 'n' chips is fantastic, and may be the best I've ever had (and certainly is for the price). read more

It's been several years since I've been to the Market, and when I last visited it was a bit more of a straightforward market. Now it's a "super"market that carries almost everything you can think of. Produce? Check. (Naturally!) Jewellery counter? Check. Clothing and shoes? Check. Home decor? Check. They've kind of become all things to all people, and I have to say it's a little much. Then again I don't live in the area, and since it's always busy (and they plan to expand across the street), I guess it's a big hit with the locals. Lots of fresh foods - produce, bakery, deli, cafeteria, etc. Prices are on par with city grocery stores, so don't expect a bargain. Still, amazing selection of foods. They also have several aisles of groceries. It was packed on a Saturday afternoon, but from what I gather it's always packed. People are friendly and helpful, and that goes for both staff and fellow shoppers. They have gluten-free items, local free-range meats, chocolates ... I can't think of anything they don't sell, except for perhaps used cars. :-D I bought some rolls and they are actually really good. Because of the limited parking it can be a bitch getting in and out of the lot, and inside their abundance of stuff makes for some difficult manoeuvring. Santa was due the day we visited and I have no idea where they planned to put him. This is a good place for the locals to do their one-stop shopping. For everything! read more

I was recently back to Masstown and finally had a chance to go into the lighthouse (i.e. the fish market). I was impressed at how much was inside what looked to be a small space. In addition to selling raw seafood, they also sell prepared dips, lasagnes, and seafood pies. Knowing that many of their clients are traveling, they also provide ice for free (to pack your purchases) and you can buy boxes/coolers/ice packs. I love this place! I love everything about it from the gift shop, the grocery store and the bakery but this review is for their little cafe/sandwich bar. I don't know how they make such simple food so delicious. I have had their soups, vegetarian chilli and my simple sandwich which is simply spinach, cheese, tomato, onion, mayo and honey mustard on whole wheat bread pressed in the panini. I usually go to Masstown for lunch 1 a week and it's a long line up and the food is usually good. Today I went and got smoked meat in a wrap and a spinach salad. When I touched my salad plate at the cash till I noticed it was hot. I asked the cashier for a cold plate and the young lady replied "honestly no, we're so busy that the plates come out of the dishwasher hot and that's all we have." I then asked her for a couple of small bowls or anything. She brought me a take out container and that's fine. I don't really care how busy you are but you need to have cold plates for cold salad. Hot food hot, cold food cold. Putting my salad on a hot plate and the cheese is melting is not acceptable. Still delicious but maybe buy more plates or keep a place for cool salad plates only. read more

I've been to this place so many times over the years to pick up things here and there during a road trip, but today was the first time I actually sat down and ordered food. There's always a long line to get their ready made salads and soups, and they make your sandwiches to order right in front of you. I opted for a turkey on rye with everything on it (except olives), plus a cup of seafood chowder. The chowder was fine, but it definitely needed some salt and pepper. The sandwich was also fine, but despite asking for everything but olives on it, the girl who made my sandwich didn't put any lettuce, spinach, sauerkraut, or green pepper on it. I didn't notice when she was making it because I was in conversation with my girlfriend at the time. She ended up getting the "smoked meat" sandwich and despite not knowing what kind of meat it actually was, it was made the way she wanted it. The take away for me is this place serves lots of nice local fare, but in terms of a place to go eat, we both agreed that it was just adequate. Our food wasn't terrible, but it didn't blow us away either. I'd say it's worth a stop to try some local Nova Scotia cuisine, but don't expect to be completely enthralled by the food either. There's a liquor store and typical groceries along with crafts and such which makes this place a nice miscellaneous place to go to. We decided to buy some homemade Jalapeño cheese bagels and some seaweed salad which we have yet to try, but the price on both seemed decent so we went for it. I make it a point to stop in when i hit the road and enjoy their hot ready pre made lunches. If its summer, the icecream is a must. I noticed today they have locally made jams and food in the corner. If you're traveling through Nova Scotia on the 104 and feel like breaking up the journey, I highly recommend stopping at the Masstown Market. A native New Brunswicker, I visit the old homeland pretty regularly, and I will always fake a bathroom emergency right around the Masstown exit. It combines all the best things: baked goods, ice cream, and the NSLC. There's your basic grocery store area, a gift shop, plants and flowers in season, and a deli counter that makes the best sandwiches and is such a wonderful alternative to greasy drive-thru fare. We always stop at Masstown if we're going camping to stock up on food, supplies, and beer. If you're on your way to a family meal, earn bonus points with the in-laws by picking up a loaf of bread or a pie and bringing it along. Why do you think my parents love my husband so much? After being told by a local this was a must stop we made sure to stop on our way back to Halifax from the bay of fundy. We ordered haddock & chips and the "must have" lobster roll and seafood chowder. The haddock was terrible! It didn't taste fresh, and was way too fishy. Tarter sauce was good...make sure you ask for extra as they only give you a tiny amount. The lobster roll was more of a mayonnaise roll with some lobster and limp veggies..and I have never had a more bland tasteless chowder! Overall if you need veggies I am sure its worth the stop just don't eat the deli food! After such a terrible meal we got the ice cream and that was worth it. read more

What a fantastic place. Try going in there just for a sandwich - I dare you. It's impossible. I had a lobster roll with a side of broccoli mandarin orange salad...so delicious! I could have had the chowder...or the homemade chili and tea biscuit or a number of sandwiches made to order...I strolled over to the grocery area and walked out with a flat of perfect strawberries, freshly picked beets and a cart full of local yumminess. Then I made the error of "taking a peek" at the craft area, bought a bottle if wine, and then found myself in the garden center where my husband rescued me from myself. The fact that he was holding fresh pecan butter tarts help to ensure my safe - albeit sad -walk back to the car. I have enjoyed stopping in here since the 1980's driving back and forth to school. We are visiting town and could not wait to stop in. Lines are way too long at the fish boat. We went inside to pick up some Canada favs to take back to California. Older blond lady at the cash could use some customer skills training. I placed my credit card into the chip area. I let her know I was using credit as most businesses assume it is a debit card. I said to her credit, she said what are you using, I said credit, again assuming she thought I was using debit. She said it again. At that point I thought she did not hear me?! Well she became angry, waved her hands in the air and raised her voice to me, what one, how am I suppose to know what to punch in over here. OK, I get it, I missed the question but that is no way for someone to treat a customer or anyone. We won't be back. Obviously us Americans are too stupid to shop here. read more
