The Futon was adequate, comfy to lie on for a few minutes, rather uncomfortable to attempt sleeping on and I prefer an extra - firm mattress. This led me to look forward to the Tatami mats that were to be delivered a month later. 2. The Tatami mats all smelled very strongly of mouldy hay, not the "sweet" smell described in reviews of Japanese tatamis, not anything like what I smelled when I was visiting Japan in tatami lined rooms and not anything like the tatami mats I looked at in the Futon' D'Or store when I was there to shop. I figured that this smell would dissipate after a few days - it did not - it was overpowering after a few days. I was not told by the staff that delivered tatami mats can be neither exchanged nor refunded as is written on the bill. I will try to get the store to take them back but I have a feeling that this will not likely happy. So I likely am out $550 for 4 tatami mats that smell intolerably bad to me. If the store refunds them I will change my rating in a separate posting. If the store does not refund them I will likely throw them out.

I do not recommend dealing with Newell Furniture and especially not if delivery is involved. We went in person to the store in Montreal and purchased a floor model table. We paid an extra fee to have it delivered, the delivery took 3 attempts with us staying at home, missing work and waiting for an entire day without it showing up. Each time we had to call ourselves to find out what was going on, and nobody seemed to know or have record of what we had been told about the delivery timing. Finally, when the table did arrive it had several obvious scratches on it. We called Newell to let them know and ask what could be done and we were offered no options. Everyone we spoke to was rude, and the last communication we received was an email accusing us of lying and saying the scratches were already on the table when we purchased it in the store. They definitely were not - these were obvious scratches on the top of the table, I had three additional people with me when I bought it and we all sat around the table examining it and saw no scratches. The salesperson also did not mention anything about damage. We have now given up and are just going to keep the damaged table because we are at the end of our available time and energy to deal with this.

Things I fell in love with in here include the gorgeously painted sets of babushka dolls, the old timey lightbulbs that fit a regular lamp but have filament you can look at without burning your retinas, and this one industrial raw wood stool that I considered trying to waltz out with, despite its bulk, because I think it and I could dance together dreamily for a lifetime. The furniture is locally made and the friendly employee told me they are carrying more and more local design, but you can also find neat Japanese and French pieces and lots of ways to bun through your hard earned ducats.
