My father-in-law, whom I consider one of the smartest men I've ever met (attorney and real estate mogul), encouraged me to sign up my daughter for Kumon. He said it's all about repetition, and he was right. Kumon has been a trusted math and reading tutoring system that has been around for 50 years. My daughter started when she was 3 1/2 years old, and she has already exceeded my expectations 100 percent. Kumon is an after school program too, so a child or teen any age can benefit from it. Each center is individually owned, and I really like this one on Silverado Ranch. The lead instructor is Michael Morrison, and he runs the center. The first step is to call him at the center and he will set up an appointment to assess your child. When Grace was assessed, he does at when the center is not doing any tutoring, and he can meet with my daughter and myself. You can choose either math or reading or both. We chose to do both, there is a monthly payment plan, but we choose to pay 6 months in advance and received a discount, coming to $1500 total. We are finishing up our first 6 months and will be signing up again. It is totally worth it, I feel my daughter has a huge academic edge already. We plan to complete the entire course over the years to come. At this tutor center, I am pleased with our tutor. My daughter goes to Kumon twice a week for 30-50 min, and always sees the same tutor Ms. Freya. We love Ms Freya! She is very professional, friendly and keeps the little ones on task in a nice manner. My daughter seems to learn a lot from her and listen to her. Overall, this center seems to have consistent tutors with very little turnover. That says a lot about Micheal, he must be a good leader to his team. Parents can wait in the lobby, there is a glass so we can see our kids hard at work and keeps everything done with our kids in plain view. that means a lot to over-protective moms like me. Lastly, I would like to point out that us as parents have to be involved with their Kumon work. There is homework, and if your Kids are as young as mine, you must be with them to help them through all the homework. If your kids are older, they are more independent with their homework. My 5th grader has been doing Kumon since the summer before Kindergarten. She is doing 6th+ grade level math. I find it helpful because it is daily practice of fundamentals. It is most evident after the summer when everyone returns to school and has forgotten everything, while my child jumps right in with everything fresh in her mind. Because she is ahead of everyone, this gives her confidence at school as Kumon gets harder, and makes her feel good about herself. This daily reinforcement is important and I equate it to brushing your teeth - you just do it. Even on your birthday, even during holidays. Each packet only takes 10-20 minutes depending on difficulty. She will do Kumon until she finishes it (probably high school). We started Kumon in California and since moving here 2 years ago, we have been very impressed with the instructor, Scott. He is very involved with helping the children and runs a very organized center. He always touches base periodically with the parent. In California, the teacher's center was a paper nightmare, the parents were instructed to wait outside (there was nowhere to sit) and she was always to busy to have a conversation with you. Price: both programs for $230 per month. You can do just math only or just reading only if you prefer. Ambiance: large space with seating for parents in the front area to *quietly* wait for their child to finish their work with a viewing window and main area for the students and the assistants. If your child is older, you can also wait in your car but you must be available and not just drop your child off unattended.
