You can imagine our devastation after not only losing my dad but then having an incompetent funeral director drop the ball and never bother to inform us the Navy wasn't coming. When he called today after getting nasty with me via text when confronted after my dads memorial service Bob told me that he didn't realize that Friday was a federal holiday and that was why he couldn't confirm the detail for a Saturday funeral. Now mind you he had almost 4 weeks to do it as we had my dad cremated. Well I guess he was the only person in the US who didn't realize that the Navy is a federal outfit and they would be closed on Juneteenth. He never thought to call prior to that even though I submitted all necessary paperwork to him well before the service. Oh yes, I had to get all of the paperwork. That was another task he as the director couldn't handle! My mom even touched base with him a few days prior to my dad's service and he told her it was a go. He then lied and stated that he never said that after I confronted him. Through all of this my dad never received the military honors at his burial and it has caused my family so much emotional distress and we are even more devastated that my dad never received the burial he deserved. All because of utter incompetence!

Gardner is the usual funeral home used by many of my family, friends and neighbors. I think it's because of the location. To me, it can't be much else. This is your "typical" yuck factor funeral home in my opinion. Ugly, outdated, wallpaper and a funky stench, with just a touch of creepy & coldness in the air. I took a mint after our first "stop" and it was actually a soft, nasty/stale candy instead. I spit it in the trash. The one employee didn't know where my friend, the DAUGHTER of the deceased, was and looked at me clueless. Not good AT ALL. It's nice that they have tissue boxes a-plenty and I believe, small water bottles as well. The only decor, if you will, that I liked, was the cage of cute finches.

But when I called this place, Jamie, who answered the phone, was so patient and kind explaining what we need to do to prepare ourselves when the time comes. We have a family history with DuBois Funeral Home so when my mother died we chose to go with…read moreDuBois. The morning my mom died, we met as a family and took a call from the funeral director. In our first conversation, he made a comment about being tired because he had to get up early to pick up my mother's body and "had to be up all night". A couple of days after my mom died, my dad made a comment about not knowing when he would get her ring. As he had quite a bit on his plate, I told him I would call the funeral home on his behalf to inquire about her ring. I called and reached the funeral director. When I asked about her wedding band, his first response was to say she wasn't wearing one. I explained that she was. My mom had bad arthritis and her ring couldn't be removed due to her swollen knuckle, so there was no question that she was wearing her ring. The funeral director again told me that the ring must have been left at the hospital. I reiterated that her ring was on her finger as it could not be removed. At this point, the funeral director informed me that her ring was cremated and with her ashes. I was upset to hear this, but I told myself that there was nothing that could be done and prepared to exit the call. As I was about to exit the call, Mr. Dubois asked me "Why didn't you tell me you wanted the ring?" I stopped Mr. Dubois and asked him to please not put the missing ring on my family. In response, Mr. Dubois stated that he hoped someday I could understand how difficult his job was. I was so taken aback by his response that I repeated what he said incredulously, to which he replied that I was obviously an "angry woman". I was again shocked that this was his response. When I stated that I was upset that my mom's ring was gone, Mr. Dubois responded that I was lying and that my mother's ring wasn't gone, it was with her ashes. After this back-and-forth, I asked him to please stop as I was grieving and upset that I couldn't give my dad his wife's ring. Mr. Dubois told me I had an anger problem, and that I "wouldn't accept his apology", before hanging up on me. Saying "you won't accept my apology" isn't an apology. As the ring was gone and we were in the middle of planning her memorial, I did my best to move forward. On the day of the memorial service, my family and I set up memorial tables with mementos of my mom's life. Once the service started, we were very busy greeting visitors and weren't paying attention to the memorial tables. After the service, we realized that the funeral home staff had covered the tables with programs and the sign-in book - right on top of the mementos we had laid out. They didn't ask us if they could do this or request we move anything--they just put them right on top. My mom's ring and a smooth service couldn't bring her back, but not having her ring, in particular, is a loss we feel. No one is perfect and mistakes are understandable. Mr. Dubois' response was not.
