My daughter Val absolutely lost her love of learning during her hybrid/COVID school year, despite all of our attempts to keep her engaged. My husband and I ended up moving our family out of state for three years and things only got worse for her, beginning with uncharacteristic behavioral changes both in school and at home. We decided to move back to Westchester, and the first thing we did was enroll Val for summer tutoring because we could not handle the tears and negotiations when it came to homework and the general apathy towards school. Something wasn't right, and we could not figure out what it was, and for 2 years, her teachers had no suggestions that seemed to work. Alison assessed our rising fifth grader and determined that she was still reading and performing at a third-grade level. Our kid was two years behind in school in all areas, and no one caught this for over 2 years. We were doing everything right, and somehow it still went so wrong. Val was in a private school. We did homework together. We read together. It was the HLC assessments that pointed out her academic strengths and weaknesses and addressed how to best approach the academic inadequacies in the most effective ways. We decided to do an intensive summer program, five days a week for 10 weeks during the summer. We continued three times a week come September. In November 2023, Allison sat on a Zoom call with my husband and me, for the first quarter parent-teacher 5th-grade conferences, and before we said anything to her teachers, we wanted to wait and see how they assessed Val. Her school teachers confirmed what we were hoping.They confirmed that all of Val's hard work was paying off. She was reading and writing at a 5th grade level and was hitting all her benchmarks for math and reading. When Alison explained the intensive intervention that Val had completed, the teachers were shocked and never would have imagined how behind this kid had been just a few months prior. Val continued to work with Allison's incredible team three times a week, to continue this evolution and success the rest of the school year. We dropped to "summer maintenance" twice a week summer of 2024, knowing that middle school was just around the corner. Unfortunately, we did have to move away from Westchester again, but the invaluable skills and hard work paid off. My sixth-grade daughter just came home today with a report card stating her 3.1 GPA and is officially an Honor Roll student. Her science teacher has recommended her for honors science next year. While my husband and I have never been focused on grades, this achievement has undoubtedly changed how our daughter views herself academically and what she feels she is capable of. Alison listened. She let me cry. And then she got to work, constantly reassessing the best way to get my kid back on track. Not only is Val academically succeeding, she actively reads in her spare time, seeks out authors of books she's enjoyed independently, and has rave reviews from her teachers to date. Does she want to do her homework immediately after school? No. She's 12. Of course not. Does she voluntarily open her books on the weekend to review and get ahead? Also no. But she does it, and I watch as she utilizes the study skills HLC taught my kid, and then she comes home from school HAPPY. There's no profound way I can possibly express the level of gratitude I have. If sharing the success of one kid who was so turned off to learning, but found her way back to loving her education again, I hope that helps one parent to make the best decision they can and join the HLC community. Trust the process, it is an invaluable investment in your child's education and future.

They advised that the first step was a foundational test to assess their needs, followed by a meeting to discuss options. However, after the testing, I did not receive any meeting confirmation emails and had to call the office to remind them. Despite reiterating my daughter's need for summer help, during a subsequent Zoom meeting, the assistant director informed me they do not offer such services and promised to forward the meeting information, which never arrived. I've tried to move past this, but I remain unsettled. I will certainly caution anyone who asks about my experience and advise them against choosing this center.

Al Diker is not fully versed on current research, knowledge, and understanding of children with various special needs. I asked very specific questions about reading behaviors, pre reading skills, comprehension with regards to receptive and expressive language ability and/or deficiencies, as well as visual perceptual deficiencies with regards to my daughters needs. HE WAS UNABLE to answer these questions. For example, when I asked him about how he would approach children with visual perceptual deficits, (i.e. scanning and tracking) he didn't understand what this meant!!!! He wanted to know if she wore glasses. I said it's not an eyeball thing, it's a brain thing- and continued to respond to my questions with gimmicky claims of how children will be able to "move from 'I can't to I can'". This doesn't fly with the more discerning parent. What does that mean? He simply could not answer my very specific questions. He also cut me off constantly throughout the entire conversation to give me more gimmicky statements and had absolutely ZERO interest in learning about my child's specific needs. WHICH SAYS A LOT! I've done a lot of research, and this is not a fully developed reading program. It would be good for a short period perhaps, but not long term. PLEASE PROCEED WITH CAUTION and do your research. PLEASE, especially if you have a child with needs. I would recommend something multi sensory and fully developed. The Windward School and The Stephen Gaynor School use multi sensory methods for a reason!!!

At 14 months old, she has already begun to recognize and repeat words and phrases in each language. In addition, Carousel's classes have helped her become more focused, attentive, patient, and social. The exercises have improved her fine motor skills, and the curriculum has enhanced her love for music. The teachers at Carousel are as kind and gentle as they are energetic and capable. They are experts not only in their spoken language, but also in how to educate from infancy. The staff are all super responsive and helpful. The owner, Patrizia, treats every child like family. She knows every child's name and is often there to greet us at the front door. My daughter, who normally clings to my side, runs into her arms. She is extremely kind, patient, involved, wonderful with children, and has created an incredible place for them to thrive. I would HIGHLY recommend this place, even for a household that isn't bilingual. It's been incredible for early childhood development.

I heard great things about Kumon, but this particular franchise was cold, the owner condescending and rude and the staff disengaged and unfriendly. We arrived for a scheduled assessment and introduction to Kumon. After waiting several minutes (where a staff person saw us but did not feel it necessary to greet or acknowledge us in any way so we stood awkwardly at the door unsure what to do) my daughter was called in and, without any introduction or explanation, was told to sit and take a test. The atmosphere was almost punitive. During the ten minute test, the 3 staff onsite were talking and laughing loudly. Perhaps they felt since they were speaking in a foreign language it would not be disruptive, but the level of disrespect for the kids trying to focus on their work was jarring. After her test, I was invited in to talk to the owner and discuss next steps for my child. There again no greeting, no explanation of the program, how Kumon works, how they can help. Kumico never bothered to even say hello or introduce herself. She did not ask any questions about my child, our goals, where she goes to school....just sat me down and told me that my child is 'confused' and 'very behind'. This place is not warm, not engaging, not friendly and while the Kumon system might work, I can't imagine sending any child here to feel good about themselves or be inspired to learn.
