We sent our daughter to Hamlin in 5th grade. She is severely dyslexic, and Hamlin worked very well…read morefor her. I truly wish you could be sending your child to the Hamlin of five years ago. Since then, they got a new headmaster and everything has changed. Lots of "experts" came in and rearranged everything. Us lowly parents found that it became a shadow of what it was. Before, the math courses were tracked, which is very important in a student body where some students have enormous difficulties with numbers and some are advanced. Instead, all students were put in generic classes, which only led to great frustration for everyone. Algebra as a regular class was eliminated entirely, even though some students were entirely ready for it. The english classes became very political. Any book that encouraged joy in reading was efficiently replaced with books about the teachers' political beliefs. Extra credit projects were going to online political events. The classes also began studying TV shows in addition to books, which is very frustration when the kids need a lot of help with reading. The parents complained, of course. And they were ignored, as is the current standard. It's a sad situation, because Hamlin is a school that can do great good for the community and dyslexia as a whole. I hope they return to their focus. For now, it is very important that prospective parents be warned what they are getting into.

On short notice, Paola and her team found an opening in her program for my kid (and his friends!) The proof is in their success-my kids scored in the high 80 and 90 percentiles on their ISEEs, were accepted to their private schools of choice, and earned 5s on AP Physics and Calculus exams. My son is a senior, and with Lisa's guidance, achieved a 1530 on the SAT, missing only one math question-no superscore, just one test. Thus far, he has not been turned down by any of the top-tier engineering programs to which he has applied. My younger child is now working diligently with Lisa to maximize his SAT scores as he prepares for college applications in the fall. What makes this all the more impressive is the fact that both my children have dyslexia and dysgraphia-school has not come easy for them. Whether working directly with Lisa or one of her expert team members, you can expect compassion, professionalism, flexibility, and a commitment to meet your child at his or level, emotionally and academically. Lisa and her team are exacting and demanding, but with an understanding that kids' anxiety levels and workloads fluctuate through the school year and need to be taken into consideration and adapted to. Working with Lisa, I felt supported as a parent, and more importantly, I knew that while my children were working hard, they too felt supported. My kids have tried preparing for standardized tests using workbooks and online/in-person group classes, but both report the one-on-one experience they have had with Lisa and her team to be the game-changer. Not only are Lisa and her team effective, they are kind! I have enjoyed all my interactions with them, and the kids do not balk when it is time to get down to work. They also feel motivated to get their work done between sessions, so they are prepared for their next meeting-with no helicoptering from me. This is how test prep should be.

The educators here are not only exceptionally skilled, but also deeply compassionate, committed to seeing and nurturing the best in every child. The school fosters independence, confidence, and a strong sense of community. Some preschools strike me as chaotic, while others seem a bit too library-like; I think Northwest Montessori strikes a thoughtful balance between academic learning and play, ensuring a structured yet lively classroom environment. We've seen our kids develop a broad range of skills--motor, executive function, literacy, math, creativity--within a highly cooperative setting, and they have of course made many close friends. I also think that the Northwest Montessori team is deeply committed to INCLUSION, embracing children of all backgrounds and needs including neurodiverse learners. I've always felt that every staff member at NWM, from teachers to administrators, is dedicated to creating a space where each child feels at home and can reach their fullest potential. The Wedgwood campus has three classrooms, each mixed-age from 2.5yo to 6yo (thru Kindergarten). I wasn't sure how a mixed-age classroom would work at first, but honestly it's been so awesome--it's super cool to watch kiddos learn to mentor and teach one another, and my kids have picked up so many leadership skills from being in a mixed-age environment. They have a lovely little playground that is both secure and offers a wide variety of equipment, and the kiddos always have a wonderful time. This school has not only supported our child's growth, but has helped our family heal from previous bad experiences. Our older child has since graduated and is thriving in public school, while our younger one is still benefiting from this incredible learning environment. NW Montessori is all that I hoped a child care center would be and more. The teachers obviously love what they do, the director and other staff are the best at what they do, and I feel more at ease knowing that there is an option in Seattle like this establishment. My son has only been there a couple months, but I think its the best decision I have made. He is much happier there than Lil People's World.

Fantastic results!…read more My daughter ("M") loved the math tutor she had from 8th through 11th grade, but, come 12th grade, M decided to take "Honors Physics with Calculus" and "Honors Statistics" at the same time. She also wanted to bring up her math SAT score. Concerned that keeping up with M's classes would require too much work, her tutor recommended she switch to FusionMath (based here in Seattle). If you visit their website, you will see bios of all their current tutors. However, when I emailed the company to explain the situation, I said it would be great to get some recommendations from within the list. Mark Batho, the owner, emailed me back within 24 hours introducing himself and inviting me to speak on the phone, which we did shortly thereafter. He started out as a tutor himself, and it was clear from the start he was a very smart man and a highly committed educator. Although he said he had multiple tutors that could handle the job, he did recommend two, both of which were PhD candidates at UW in physics. M started with one shortly thereafter. They hit it off fabulously and M got A's in both of her honors math classes. Moreover, she raised her Math SAT score from 670 up to 730. M's tutor was personable, highly capable, and able to schedule evening and weekend hours, so M could do theatre in the afternoon after school. The owner, Mark Batho, is a delightful man and really seemed to care about how well M did. In total, I very strongly recommend FusionMath. (Fwiw, Mr. Batho also owns Uplift Writing - a writing tutoring company!)
